You can “unlock” a locked phone.

You can buy a factory unlocked phone.

I wouldn’t buy a “brand new” manually unlocked phone.

You’re also going to spend a lot of money at once, where a provider would do interest free over two years plus likely a discount, and your not leaving till the contract is over.

I always take interest free deals, and so should you.

@solidgrue@lemmy.world avatar

I buy all of my phones carrier-unlocked, and have never had a problem.

Potential pitfalls are if the IMEI is blacklisted, which could happen if the phone is reported as stolen, or if the radio deck isn’t compatible with your carrier’s network.

In the US, the AT&T and T-Mobile networks are pretty open, and you just need to pop in your SIM card. I don’t have experience with Verizon to know if you can bring your own device or not, but I imagine as long as the phone can work with Verizon then its probably just a matter of visiting a store to have it activated.

RightHandOfIkaros ,

I have Verizon, and you can absolutely give them your own device, you don’t have to buy from them. You just have to make sure the phone supports their proprietary network protocol, which is why Verizon usually has their own version of devices compatible with their network.

Bridger , to nostupidquestions in Potential downsides of buying a brand new soft-unlocked (carrier-unlocked) phone?

For me the advantage of buying an unlocked phone from the phone manufacturer is avoiding the bloatware from the carrier.

givesomefucks ,

That’s not what OP is doing.

He’s buy a “brand new” phone the store opened and unlocked.

Completely different, and if a store is doing that, they’re probably doing other shady adjacent shit.

I wouldn’t buy any “brand new” expensive electronic that’s already been opened and had shit done to it

Mr_Blott , (edited ) to asklemmy in What books do you consider must reads?

Soooooo many pretentious replies in this thread, they’re always the same.

Fuck that boring crap, start with good old light-hearted fiction.

Try -

The One Hundred Year Old Man Who Climbed Out Of A Window And Disappeared

The Breach by Travis Lee

The Dublin Trilogy by Caimh McDonnell (all 5 of them, dear god they’re hilarious)

The Girl With All The Gifts

Invasion by DC Alden

A Man Called Ove by Fredrik Backman (Anxious People is amazing too)

Wayward Pines by Blake Crouch (Recursion too)

The Idiots’ Club by Tony Moyle

And of course, The Internet Is A Playground by David Thorne

Waaaaaay more entertaining than all the classics mentioned, a very small selection of contemporary authors are vastly superior to the writers of yesteryear

Edit - downvoted by the wanks that think reading George Orwell makes them clever lmao. Once you get over 30 you realise that books are for entertaining, not to leave on your coffee table to try to seem interesting

Books are not meant to entertain. If you “realize” when you are over 30 that books are only for entertainment, then you are simply put, a lazy person.

Classics never outdate. They will forever remain as the must-reads for people who want to expand their knowledge and perception of the world because they come from a time where information was not as easily exchangeable as it was today. The only way to share ideas effectively and permanently was writing books.

You have no right to downlook on classics. Reading a classic book that has proven it’s value long ago will forever be more beneficial to a person than an author’s silly book that is written with the sole purpose of entertainment.

Reading 1984 WILL make a person clever.

Of course, you can always say some stuff like “damn who hurt you” and leave the discussion if you wish. Don’t make ignorant comments if you don’t know what you are speaking about.

Project Arroyo seems dead, though, so no Fallout that I know of.

But why no official ones? They don’t think it would be profitable. Microsoft and Bethesda are businesses first.

I’d like to see that data. I’d be surprised if it exists, companies rarely release that level of detail on their finances.

And “evil” is a very strong word. We’re talking about video games, a luxury recreational product.

    simple ,

Countless games have had successful remakes, and crazy profits.

The vast majority of remakes, even the bigger budget ones tend to be of smaller games. Games that are easier to recreate or port. Bethesda games are huge, and it’d need to be ported to another engine and redo everything from voice acting to the open world visuals. Even if they’ll bother with all that, I don’t think there’s a demand to remake Bethesda’s older, clunkier games.

    catloaf ,

Voice acting has been good enough in the past few decades that it’s usually usable without re-recording. Maybe remastering at most.

There’s also plenty of tooling to upscale textures too, even without AI. The biggest hurdle (for assets, at least) is 3D models. You can slap a subdivision modifier on them to make them higher-poly, but you’d still have to make sure the UVs didn’t get messed up (or whatever it is that they’re using these days). And also verify that nothing weird happened like new geometry hiding or showing something in-game. (Collision probably doesn’t need to change if you’re just increasing polycount.)

Oh boy, I get to excite you with the news of SkyBlivion, a community project to recreate the Oblivion game in the skyrim engine. Its been in development since 2013, and they say they have a 2025 release date scheduled but as I’ve been following this project and SkyWind (Morrowind remade in Skyrim’s engine) for years, I wouldn’t hold your breath on a 2025 release.

    Buttflapper OP ,

I’ve known about this for a while. Sadly, I don’t think it’ll ever be finished. Even if it is, Skyrim is an extremely old engine and looks like crap, runs like crap. I modded the hell out of it with 4k graphics on an RTX 4070… It’s just awful. The engine isn’t great. They need to make something new. Even Starfield had the same old ass dated engine.

    Renacles ,

Most of the work is done and they are aiming to release next year, at this point I’d be surprised if it doesn’t get done.

In any case, this is a project that a lot of people have been working on, for free, for over a decade, I wouldn’t tell them it will look like crap even if I really thought so.

There’s various contractual reasons they may say this but ultimately they probably can’t tell. Those terms and conditions don’t count for anything and can’t be enforced because no reasonable reads them. I’d just go ahead with using your router and wait for somebody to say something (feign ignorance).

Toes , to nostupidquestions in Potential downsides of buying a brand new soft-unlocked (carrier-unlocked) phone?

Potentially no manufacturers warranty if they aren’t an authorized seller.

If you buy it directly from Google it’ll be unlocked.

“will remain unlocked unless I factory reset it”

I’d stay away from anything like that, it’s unnecessary.
