Are you THE AlexanderESmith of social.alexanderesmith.com fame??

AlexanderESmith ,

Indeed I am! But I don't let all that fame go to my head (I have a special deal for autographs right now, just $20!)

But seriously, while I consider lackluster (or completely missing) new-account verification to be the much larger issue, federation is one to watch as well. My instance is so-named because I'm the only one who uses it.

At least it's a fairly significant effort to set up an entire instance for a single user. That should keep spam from single-user instances reasonably low. And if someone sets up a vaguely legitimate-looking instance, but enough users are muted/blocked/moderated/etc, you can just block the entire instance. Changing instance names is more of a hassle than nuking it entirely and starting over (new domain, new database, new IPs if the admins are paying attention, etc).

Cadeillac ,
@Cadeillac@lemmy.world avatar

Sounds reasonable I suppose. I don’t know a whole lot of the under the hood workings of Lemmy and I’m not going to pretend I do. I was mostly poking fun in the spirit of that one guy that kept getting asked if he was from some forum

Edit: The Reference

AlexanderESmith ,

heh, indeed.

Yeah, technically I run mbin (a fork of the now-defunct kbin) which has both threaded (reddit/lemmy/etc) and microblog (deadbird/mastodon/etc) features. I originally set myself up on kbin.social , but after it died I decided to not let my account (history/rep/preferences/subscriptions/etc) continue to be subject to the whim of random admins that might run out of funding, see something shiny, do something stupid and get defederated, etc. I thought "Wait, I'm a random admin, I'll just make my own instance, with blackjack, and hookers..."

Cadeillac ,
@Cadeillac@lemmy.world avatar

Hell yeah! I dig it. Thanks for the explanation. Why did they skip over lbin?

AlexanderESmith , (edited )

Ha!

Well, kbin seems to have gotten its name from a longer form, "karabin" (see the - defunct - polish devlog URL referenced here: https://karab.in/m/karabinDevlog/wpisy). I have no idea what it means, but it could be Polish (though - according to Google translate - "kara" is "penalty" and "karabin" is "rifle", and I don't think that's the theme the dev was going for, so maybe it was a portmanteau that I just won't get as a native English speaker).

As for mbin, it was forked from kbin by a guy named Melroy, so I'm betting that's where the M came from.

RangerJosie , to games in What's your favorite controller?

PS2. Before all the unnecessary extra expense got added in.

frazorth ,

I’m not sure what you are referring to here. The Dual Shock 2 was the standard PS2 controller throughout its lifetime.

Do you mean the OG PlayStation, which had the standard controller, then the dual analogue stick, and finally the Dual Shock with the two analogue sticks plus rumble?

I liked the analogue sticks, loved Katamari. Rumble didn’t add enough.

RangerJosie ,

I like the sticks and rumble. By extra stuff I meant like haptic triggers and stuff like that in the newest controllers.

The old standard Playstation controller. With sticks and rumble.

I own a Series S. And I’ve been looking for a PS pattern Xbox controller forever. But I’ve never found one.

frazorth ,

Oh gotcha. You mean before it went Dual Shock 3? Sorry I thought you were referring to the multiple iterations the PS1 had.

Advantage over Dual Shock 2 was that it was wireless, and I do appreciate that, but I completely agree that PlayStation layout is great.

I do like the Dual Shock 4 when on the computer, as the little touchpad on the front helps with SteamOS when dealing with shitty interfaces for 3rd Party Launchers that demand a mouse and keyboard.

If I didn’t encounter them occasionally then Dual Shock 3 all the way as I dont normally need any of the other “features”.

frazorth ,

Does the Series S support USB controllers? Could you not use one of those knock off USB PS controllers?

Not sure if there’s a flatpak, U might need to add a PPA, but it’s just a one time copy/paste a few commands.

Steam

Works fine, but some games might not run or require some tinkering, check games u play on protondb.com

Discord

It’s a bit annoying because they require u to have the latest version all the time, it won’t auto update, and the package might take a while to update, so u either download and update manually every time (it will be a different install than the flatpak package) or use the web version, peraonally i just run a script to download and extract the tar.gz version when there’s an update.

Could you share that script with op?

Sure

brave has flatpack , and you don’t really have to do all that to update discord just go to software store and click update?

elxeno ,

I don’t use flatpak but i assume there’s a delay between discord and flatpak updates, or even if there is no delay

just go to software store and click update?

This would update everything, right? That’s usually not what i want when i’m opening discord.

Antiochus ,

I’ve had no problems with the Discord flatpak and updates. I use a KDE variant of UBlue and the package manager prompts me to update all flatpaks when I start the computer (whenever there are updates available), which I do with one click.

For a new user, i would think that individually managing package updates is probably not a desired workflow.

I drank it in Taiwan among other very low sugar juices that I prefer over plain water. It’s just one of many drinks made from ingredients we never thought of, like mushroom drinks and cereal grain drinks. The bean drink must have been forgettable enough that I can’t describe the taste after four years away.

remotelove , (edited ) to startrek in Who had it worse: Enterprise-D or Voyager?
@remotelove@lemmy.ca avatar

Voyager had it worse than Enterprise-D in general, but I am struggling to define “natural disasters” in this case. I’ll need help with this as I am not an Enterprise-D expert, but I think I can explain more about what I think is proper context from Voyager.

Strange aliens that invade the ship are just aliens doing what they do. It’s natural, but technically not a disaster.

Voyager getting pulled into the delta quadrant was an act of an entity and not really a disaster in the whole scheme of things. It was really bad, but limited in scope.

I almost classified a planet being destroyed by a dangerous power source explosion a natural disaster, but it’s not. It’s humanoids doing stupid humanoid things.

Voyager does have “Shattered”, that seems natural and a disaster, but it’s limited to just Voyager.

“Year of Hell” is so close, because time itself is keeping the imperium in a never ending cycle of wiping out entire civilizations, but doesn’t make the cut because it was still the work of one crew and the “disasters” technically never happened.

“Friendship One” may be in the running because a civilization was “gifted” with matter/antimatter tech before it was ready. It was a mistake of pure chance that kicked off a path to the destruction of a society.

(Enterprise-D had a few episodes where they were saving planets from actual natural disasters though. As mundane as that sounds, some of those may come out on top by definition.)

Edit: To completely destroy my own attempt to set content, “The Omega Directive” may be it as the Omega particle was able to create subspace ruptures. It’s perfectly and evenly tied with Enterprise’s “Force of Nature” where warp drives were destroying the fabric of subspace itself. In that context, both win. Unintentional and unexpected natural consequences of one force of nature acting on another. (I just completed wrecked my own previous arguments, I know. Just having too much fun with this one, s’all.)
