StrawberryPigtails , to nostupidquestions in How does app forking works exactly (ex: forkgram)?

I’m short on time, but here’s the general idea. Telegrams front end, the part you use I the open source part. The backend is the closed off part. The two parts are separate but communicate via a protocol, kinda like email. The forked project can change anything they want, to make it do whatever they want, but it still needs to be able to speak to the backend server.

Mbin of course! I may be biased, since I created the fork and I'm a contributor to Mbin.

ClassifiedPancake , to asklemmy in Do you have experiences where your family members are so much engaged in doing something/sports that the their skill of "lets just sit and have a talk" is nonexistent?

One of my uncles is always extremely into collecting something but the topic is changing every few years. First it’s board games, then geocaching, then geocoins (a subset of geocaching), then it’s lego. Now it’s a soccer club but just the merch, he never talks about the players or games. He lives in a small apartment so he puts stuff in self storage or even in the basements of other family members… I guess it’s compensation for not achieving much in life but it makes that situation even worse.

JackGreenEarth , to asklemmy in What's A Piece Of Software You Could Never Do Without?

Android. As bad as it is, if I had to use iOS or Linux phones it would be even worse, at least with the current state of Linux phones.

But actually, maybe if Android didn’t exist, the FOSS community would focus more on Linux phones and they would be an actually good option. Maybe Android shouldn’t exist?

Rai ,

For me it’s iOS, funnily enough. I use Windows for all of our video game machines and Linux for everything else, but I don’t use any Google products or services. After messing around on my computers all the time, I don’t want to even have to THINK about doing things to my phone to make it go. My current phone is six years old and the only reason I’m upgrading this year is to get a 120hz screen, USB-C, and for better low light pictures of cats. And a terabyte would be nice.

JackGreenEarth , (edited )

Google is a bad company, and Apple isn’t any better. Probably the best option for you would be GrapheneOS on one of the latest pixels, they have intuitive software, 120hz screens, have had USB-C for years, a good camera, lots of storage, and most importantly GrapheneOS doesn’t use Google or Apple, it’s FOSS.

Rai ,

GrapheneOS is awesome, but like I said, no google products and I don’t want to fuck with my phone at all. Apple isn’t perfect, but it’s leagues better than stock Google with app permissions and overall privacy. My six year old phone is still fully supported for at least another year, and I enjoy the OS for the very few things I do on my phone. This is definitely the best option for me.

I_Miss_Daniel ,

Maybe just a feature phone and tether it to a laptop?

NocturnalMorning , to games in Anyone else feels like rdr2 have no bad missions?

Haha, currently playing rdr2 again right now. There are plenty of terrible missions in the game. Depending on if you’re talking regular missions or story missions, some of the story missions where you shoot up the whole damn town are stupid, and then you just go pay a bounty and it’s all okay. But, you can’t enter Blackwater under any circumstances or tye calvary comes in and shoots you up, dead within 10 seconds of stepping foot there.

Lots of essentially fetch quests, especially the ones where you go shake down people for loan money for strauss.

There are missions you can fail for venturing too far away from people, but you’re never told that until you’re too far away already. This is just what I could think of off the top of my head.

Dkarma , to asklemmy in Are you self aware of different types of hungry?

I’ve been doing IF and fasting for a few years and this parallels my experience with hunger and food.

Now that my diet is protein heavy I crave that. Before it was carbs.

I crave salads and fresh veg every few months. Mostly I eat shakes tho.

@deafboy@lemmy.world avatar

Gmail offers imap amd smtp access. You have to enable 2FA, and then it will allow you to create account for so called “less secure apps”.

In your place, I’d either continue using gmail directly, or finish the configuration of the self hosted mail server and just use that with any smtp/imap client. I suggest getting a separate domain for testing first, before moving your primary inbox there.

0x0 , to android in Why is the phone app so big?

Spyware… safe to delete so long as you install an alternative like maybe Simple Dialer.

BananaTrifleViolin ,

Fossify Phone is better. Simple Mobile Tools was sold to ZipoApps which has a history of bloating apps with advertising, telemetry, and charges etc. Fortunately Simple tools were open source and Fossify is the free and open source fork of all the apps in the suite, some even maintained by original makers from Simple Mobile Tools.
