Consider giving MiroTalk a try. It has several versions but the P2P version would probably be perfect for your scenario. It’s free, runs in your browser, doesn’t need an account, and doesn’t have time limit shenanigans. I’ve used it in lieu of Discord calls before and don’t have any complaints.

Fascinating, thanks for sharing. I see it says peer to peer vid chat and works in the browser but I’m wondering if it requires setting up a server or using a public instance, something like that?

Or is it possible for two people to go to the web page and start a vid chat with zero installation or any other preamble?

Sorry I’m away from home so I can’t look into the GitHub page deeply enough to answer my own questions

DABDA , to techsupport in "Right-click Save As" download different file type than URL shows in Firefox

My tech skills are rusting horribly but I tried to briefly take a look at this…

I’m seeing the same behavior with the Firefox save-as file extension being .m4a vs the displayed URL showing .mp3.

Opening either extension in VLC and viewing the codec info (Tools->Codec Info / Ctrl+J) shows the actual encoding to be ‘MPEG AAC Audio (mp4a)’.

I didn’t try grabbing a file from the torrent, but if I use the media tab in Firefox ‘Page Info’ (Ctrl+I) to “save as” the embedded IA player file it suggests a matching .mp3 extension with the displayed address (but the codec is still mp4a).

The main thing I’m not following is what you mean by having parse errors in Mp3tag. So far I haven’t seen any metadata included in either the .mp3 or .m4a downloads (I only tested the first file), they both play audio fine, and if I browse to their directory in Mp3tag (vers. 2.57) it doesn’t seem to show anything unusual to me (empty metadata, no error/alert messages). What exactly is the parse error or how is it behaving differently from what’s expected?

I also just wanted to say “THANK YOU!” for an awesome support post. You posted it to the right community, gave it a short but very descriptive title, gave lots of info about what you’ve tried and the results you’ve experienced – and did so politely :)

Nextcloud may be a bit overkill for your use case, but it does have a very good video chat function. It’s also pretty easy to deploy as a snap package or with the AIO docker image. A downside is that the other person has to have an account on your instance and log into it to join a call. However this is not necessarily difficult to arrange.

Glass cups work unfailingly for me. As far as I know they don’t see very well, so once, I tried slowly lowering one over them, and have been doing it since. Nothing else needed, just wait for it to land near you on a hard and even surface. They so far have not noticed it until the cup was fully down. After catching one, I slide a thin paper/something under the cup, and take the whole thing outside to release it.

bebopnbones ,

Yeah this is my method as well. Glass cup, very slowly descending from directly above them and they don’t seem to detect it.

Tangent, unsolicited:

Music lessons over video call, that has to be a real pain. I can’t find it now, but there’s an Adam Neely video where he talks about why online recording sessions can’t work, as transmission latency works against the immediacy needed to play music together. He said it better than I can.

Except if your idea is to play in turns, but then capturing the thing you want to show… Can’t you find another teacher closer to you?

atzanteol ,

I took lessons over zoom for years, and it works fine. Is not a recording session, you don’t need to play together.

Well, paint me green and call me a pickle. More power to you if it works. 😊

People still try. When I worked retail we’d get them often enough as you can’t just not answer an unknown number when someone is calling the store.

That said, if it’s an unknown number we’re already expecting a prank call and are just waiting for the first excuse to hang up.

The number of times I’ve been mid video call or watching a video on my headphones and they randomly decided to disconnect from my laptop and connect to another device like my phone absolutely infuriates me.

The whole multiple paired device feature really needs some work…

Lightfire228 ,

It might be your phone getting a notification, and sending that to the BT speaker, which then takes precedent over the laptop

I usually just disable BT on my phone when stuff like that happens (on android, you can change the playback device without disconnecting, and that should also prevent the phone from stealing your headphones)

xthexder ,
@xthexder@l.sw0.com avatar

There might be something to that. Unfortunately I keep Bluetooth on for my smart watch to connect. The headphones aren’t normally selected, but I think they auto-connect sometimes when they come in range. It also doesn’t help that the main way of switching the connected device is via the Android app, that requires the phone to use. (Original Surface Headphones, I’m considering replacing them because the pads are falling apart already)
