hey look reactionary content from .world! Shocked

Sex work is work.

emergencyfood , to asklemmy in Do you approve sex work? Why or why not?

If one person demands sex in return for not harming another, it is called rape and we rightly consider it to be a crime. If one person demands sex in return for not starving the other, many people seem to find it acceptable. I would never dare judge someone for the work they are forced to do by their circumstances, but ‘sex work’ (or whatever you choose to call it) is absolutely not okay. Those trapped in it deserve better.

Rivalarrival , to mildlyinteresting in Yesterday the price of electricity in Finland was negative 1.5 cents / kWh

This is not a good thing. Any time generation has to pay to produce, solar and wind rollouts are slowed.

We need better demand shaping methods, to increase load on grids during periods of excess production, and decrease loads during shortages. We need to stabilize rates at profitable points to maintain growth of green energy projects.

We also need long-term grid storage methods, to reduce seasonal variation. A given solar project will produce more than twice as much power during a long summer day as it will during a short winter day. If we build enough solar to meet our needs during October and March, we will have shortages in November, January, February, and surpluses from April through September. We will need some sort of thermal production capability anyway; hydrogen electrolysis or Fischer-Tropsch synfuel production can soak up that surplus generation capacity and produce green, carbon-free or carbon-neutral, storable fuels for thermal generation and/or the transportation sector.

perviouslyiner ,

Or just export it - there must be nearby counties that don’t have such a good renewable electric situation.

Kecessa ,

Or water batteries for dams if your neighbors don’t need your surplus, this way you don’t need to extract lithium to produce regular batteries to store the surplus

science.org/…/how-giant-water-batteries-could-mak…

vrighter ,

and who will you sell it to? the other countries will be building their own infrastructure eventually and they’ll be trying to sell to you.

Creat ,

“just export it” sounds so simple, but the required infrastructure is actually incredibly expensive. Also most of Europe is already pretty tightly connected and trade does happen to a significant degree, but I have no idea what the actual percentage is or if it’s used to balance oversupply and/or shortages. Kinda hard to find reliable sources for that.

ElCanut ,

Negative pricing IS a demand shaping method, you need to have a certain % of the electricity produced that is consumed at the same time, otherwise you risk having an unstable electricity grid.

Ah, I see you said something controversial, like “Theocracy bad” or “Imperialist capitalist state bad”. The tankies don’t like those positions for some reason.

I approve of sex work, but I don’t approve of the abusive madams and pimps of the world. Usually, they are the problem. Protection should come in a different way.

hanabatake , to asklemmy in Examples of racism on Lemmy?

I did not see any racist comments for quite some time. But xenophobic comments were common on threads about Ukraine’s invasion.

The anti-French sentiment is also present here like in the whole English speaking web.

The French aren’t known for their hygiene so I am not surprised their river is filthy

From a post about an olympic triathlete who got sick: lemmy.ml/post/18887659

In Belgium: Tartare or Mayo. Andalouse for the gal, thanks In the UK: Salt and Vinegar In both cases: I will have to change seat if you plop yourself in front of me with your poor fries inundated by ketchup. Only the French do that, and it is a Casus Belli in my book.

As in “fuck the Russians”? Because I feel that hating Russia is somewhat less based on prejudice than your other examples, and somewhat more on recent real world examples.

hanabatake ,

There were xenophobic comments towards Russians, Ukrainians and Americans in these posts.

Also, I don’t think people should insult the people of a country when they criticize its government.

z00s , to mildlyinteresting in Yesterday the price of electricity in Finland was negative 1.5 cents / kWh

Does it ever make you want to turn on every appliance in the house just for the hell of it? Lol

vga ,

No, since we pay a flat transfer rate on top of that, about 2-6 cents per kWh depending on the area.

Of course, that doesn’t stop idiots from turning on all their stoves during these times anyway.

z00s ,

That’s still pretty cheap though

general_kitten ,

Yeah in summer the electricity here can be very cheap in summer but in winter it can go to 0.20-1€/kw/h

eugenia , to linux in Question about installing on Intel MacBooks
@eugenia@lemmy.ml avatar

Try another usb, different brand. It might not be the burning app, it could be the usb itself. Also, try different ports of usb. Finally, have an ethernet usb adapter, if your laptop doesn’t have an ethernet port, because you will need that to install the wifi driver, which is not included by default on linux, because it’s not a Free driver.

letsgo , to asklemmy in Can I be picked up from my mom's house as a date since I am an adult?

Your rights as an adult are that you now get to make your own rules and everyone else has to respect them. But the flipside of that is that you also have to respect everyone else’s rules, especially those of a homeowner.

That homeowner might have rules about whether or not you can wear shoes inside, or whether you can smoke inside, etc. When you own your own place you get to make rules like this yourself, and you will be within your rights to expect your visitors, tenants and offspring to abide by them.

If for example you make a rule that says “Don’t tell strangers my address” then you would be right to expect your children to abide by that rule.

This is your mom’s rule and you have to abide by it. Tell your dates to pick you up and drop you off somewhere nearby without giving away your home address, and when you want to invite them home you need your mom’s agreement first, because it’s her house and her rules.

BTW the “I want it my way!” attitude is that of a kid not an adult. Grown-ups make agreements and stick to them. If you want different rules you can try to negotiate with her, but you have to accept if she won’t change them. There are good reasons for not letting unknown people know your address.
