AbouBenAdhem , to asklemmy in Coolest historical leader?

If we’re going for “cool story” rather than “admirable person”, then the Byzantine emperor Justinian II.

frank ,

Tell us a story!

AbouBenAdhem , (edited )

After ruling for ten years he was overthrown, had his nose cut off, and was exiled to the Crimea. Suspected of conspiring to return to power, he was summoned back to Constantinople for additional punishment; but instead he escaped to the Russian steppe where he married the sister of the Khazar kaghan. The usurpers bribed the kaghan to extradite his new brother-in-law back to the Byzantines, but Justinian was warned by his Khazar wife and killed the kaghan’s officials sent to arrest him. Then he escaped in a fishing boat to the Balkans, married his daughter to the Bulgar khan, and convinced the khan to lend him an army to defeat the usurpers. So after a ten-year exile he returned to Constantinople at the head of a barbarian army, but the city refused to surrender. Finally he used his knowledge of the city’s infrastructure to crawl in through the sewers, re-took the palace by surprise, and ruled another six years before being killed in a second rebellion.

frank ,

Holy crap, that is wild. I’m going into a rabbit hole about him, this is great!

qjkxbmwvz , to science_memes in Hermit Crab Housing Market

Seems more analogous to clothes than housing — clothes can be “too big” in the sense that the extra size is detrimental to the function, which is somewhat different from houses.

And it’s pretty common to have buy-nothing groups in cities or even at large companies. Got a loooot of hand-me-down clothes for my toddler from friends, family, and randos in the neighborhood.

SkyNTP ,

Yes and no. I’m sure there is an argument to be made that a house can be too big. Bigger houses require more maintenance, cleaning, higher taxes. Downsizing a house is also a retirement strategy.

leisesprecher ,

Also, sometimes you just want a tight fit house to show what you got.

Hirom ,

Yes, that’s a better analogy.

Actually swapping house like a hermit crab swap shell would leave very little time to move furniture, put some fresh paint on walls, have the owner review the house to return the security deposit, etc

lennivelkant ,

Pretty sure hermit crabs (like most animals) aren’t renting. The previous owner of that shell has abandoned it, so they’d be squatters or, lacking any concept of private property, simply inhabitants. Point is they wouldn’t need any owner to return security deposits they never made.

Moving furniture and personal belongings is a good point though, they don’t have any of that. Most houses aren’t too mobile either. Clothes just fit better.

OmegaMouse , to patientgamers in I know this is PatientGamers, but can we discuss how even the current generation of consoles seems to ask for patience as they aren't that many games 4 years after their release?
@OmegaMouse@pawb.social avatar

I don’t find a lot of the things in the video that relevant to be honest. Not many people speaking online in games? Sure, but I never spoke with randoms to begin with. Discord seems to work fine on the PS5 from my experience. Do either of those things really affect the decision to buy a console? Games taking a while to download - you have the same thing on Steam.

I could definitely see that developers being shackled to the previous generation is an issue. Having to develop/optimise for 11 year old hardware must limit creativity.

Being a patient gamer, I think a lot of the issues people have with lack of current gen games isn’t so much of an issue for me. There are a ton of previous gen games that I never got round to playing, and the PS5 experience in playing them is superior. And there are a ton of current gen games I’ve now got my eye on - GTA 6, Spiderman 2, GoW Ragnarok, Dragons Dogma 2, Baldur’s Gate, FF7 Rebirth, Death Stranding 2, Astrobot, Monster Hunter Wilds, Resident Evil 4 remake and MGS3 remake.

I agree that PC is the best option in a lot of cases. For me, I like sitting back on a sofa with a controller. The Steam Deck is really great for this but it’s not powerful enough to play a lot of modern games at full res. The PS5 is filling that niche for me.

Please_Do_Not , to asklemmy in What Do google Tag Service and google Analytics Do?

Others have defined what GTM does pretty well without a basic definition of it’s most common purpose. Google Analytics (GA4) has a number of conversions it can track automatically on your website, like if someone spends more than 5 minutes on your site after finding it in search results. GTM allows for customization of certain conversion triggers so you can track more specific actions and those that don’t have automatic tracking parameters in GA4. Using GTM just allows for more robust and customizable tracking basically, at least in its most common usage.

onlinepersona , to linuxmemes in Why Are You Staying On Windows 11?

We just have to wait until Windows 12, the cloud OS, and dual boot will be no more. All that’ll be necessary is a browser and a fast internet connection. CoD and Valorant players though… dunno what to do about them. Pro gaming won’t be possible without running windows locally to get the highest framerate.

palordrolap ,

The only way to prevent dual booting would require a UEFI/BIOS that pulls the OS straight over a network, bypassing local storage entirely.

Even if that didn't already rule it out, the size that OSes are these days makes it even less likely. At least not unless Microsoft (or whoever) are planning to ditch absolutely everyone who doesn't have gigabit internet. (It would be kind of funny for an OS to go back to being 1990s-sized to mitigate that though. And funnier still when someone inevitably captures it onto a hard disk anyway.)

A more likely vector would be to deliberately break third party bootloaders every time Windows boots. And that would last until the next anti-trust / monopoly lawsuit and they'd roll it back to the current behaviour of only breaking third party bootloaders on installation.

And even if somehow that didn't get rolled back, just wait until hardware vendors introduce this thing called a "switch" that can be added just before the power connector on an SSD. Can't boot from a drive that has no power. BIOS defaults to the next SATA channel. And now you're booting into Linux.

Doing the same for a mobo-mounted NVMe drive is harder but not impossible.

onlinepersona ,

Hmmmm, I think you interpreted my comment as microsoft trying to make dual booting impossible? I meant it wouldn’t be necessary anymore, because one would just require linux with a browser to access windows if need be.

The simplest way I can imagine to forcefully disable dualbooting is do what Malus does: control the hardware and only allow one signed OS on there. Don’t trust anything else.

Anti Commercial-AI license

palordrolap ,

(FWIW the downvote wasn't me)

That sounds like you're suggesting that Microsoft wouldn't care what was installed locally to be able to net-boot / run the rest of Windows.

I think it's all but certain that they'd want user's computers to to boot into something they made, or at the very least, slapped their branding all over, even if that was only a wrapper for their web browser.

I can definitely see them going down the line of saying that their online apps aren't guaranteed to work under any other system, going so far as to throw in a few deliberate stumbling hazards for anything that isn't theirs. (Until anti-trust, etc.)

And thus, dual booting will still be something that people do. Even if - as you clarified - they're not going to cripple that as well.

onlinepersona ,

Oh yeah, absolutely. They might even make Edge send some additional data to verify that it’s the browser being used. They might even add attestation with a binary is pinging Microsoft with messages signed by a microsoft private unique per machine and generated when the user signs in. They could add a paid subscription to limit the number of devices connecting to the cloud instance. For an extra fee they could add connection “from any device or browser”.

Or or or. There are a bunch of things they can do. They could also, as I said, just allow any browser to connect, but looking back, yeah, that’s probably naive.

Who knows and who knows how fast (or slow) governments would react.

For me, Stalin falls out of the cool category due to deaths under his leadership (about 3.3 million officially recorded victims).

I have always enjoyed Alice Roosevelt, Teddy Roosevelt’s daughter. She was brash, witty, at full of antics. Here’s an example: When it came time for the Roosevelt family to move out of the White House, Alice buried a Voodoo doll of the new first lady, Nellie Taft, in the front yard.

I’m a big fan of ZFS, and I use it extensively. For a single hard drive, though, wouldn’t ext4 and a few NFS shares make a lot more sense?

paperd ,

zfs is fine on a single drive too, and its cross platform, which OP said they wanted (though not which platforms, which is important here). ext4 is junk on windows and nfs doesn’t work well either for windows, which i assume OP wants because they mention NTFS.

It is simple but not convenient. I don’t want to dual boot. I’d rather not play the game at all if that is my only option.

It should be, but I’ve had too many issues with windows somehow updating and ruining my boot partion/grub.

If I want to run windows, I only run it on a VM with hardware passthrough or on a totally different machine since physically unseating my Linux M.2 from the motherboard is too much hassle and I don’t want to move it to a PCIe card.
