ricecake , to asklemmy in Can anybody explain why someone sell me an apartment in resort ?

That’s called a timeshare, and they’re not a good idea. Very sketchy, almost impossible to get rid of if you don’t want it.

You have to sign up because although you bought the apartment, you’re not the only one who bought the apartment.

You buy it and then get to sign up to use it, and then you pay a fee to use it every year even if you don’t end up using it.

You don’t get to live there.

Rhaedas , to fediverse in Thoughts Around KBin's Current Status and the Importance of Community Migration Features

The idea of migration and data preservation has been a topic since day one, since that's a big reason why so many moved to the Fediverse. I still haven't seen a perfect solution, and maybe there isn't one. Perhaps just having a lot of redundancy (oh no, reposts!) is the only true way of protecting posts for as long as possible, and even then...

Ernest started things rolling with something that probably wasn't ready for the demand, but it was there when the time came. That others forked off from it and kept it going is the bright spot here. I appreciate Lemmy and even have an account from the first days, but I like the kbin/mbin setup better so that's where I sit.

Waveform , to asklemmy in What household item do you wish there was a trial/testing period for?

Spatulas with overly-long handles. Nothing like constanty banging it all over a small kitchen.

Those little lights made to look like light switches, with their weak-ass magnets.

Clamp lamps that have scant threads on the reflector. They like to pop off and can actually instakill an incandescent.

As far as a house itself: installed carpets. It’s everything you hate about carpets, but permanent. They’re especially loathesome in bathrooms.

Do you even know the whites are the least privileged?

As unhinged as her rants are, I find them enjoyable. Especially this post. Though I suppose this post is far milder than many of her previous works. 🤣

I look towards the future with some hope.

XCOM 1 and 2 are significantly more fun when you have two players controlling the team

BearOfaTime , to nostupidquestions in if you ever had to start consuming low fat dairy and cheese due to high cholesterol, did your ldl cholesterol levels decrease?

Recent research has shown cholesterol levels aren’t really caused by dietary fat intake.

It’s largely influenced by genetics, and by other things, especially glucose instability.

When blood glucose levels vary wildly - e.g. eating a high carb meal spikes it, which causes the pancreas to release a lot of insulin at once to cope with the sudden glucose increase, which then signals EVERY cell to “use glucose!”, including fat cells which are very efficient at storing glucose as fat. Since carbs are metabolized quickly, glucose levels drop quickly because of that initial insulin spike.

Those sudden high blood glucose levels apparently cause vascular injury, and cholesterol is used to basically form a patch on the artery wall so it’s protected while it heals. Keep cycling glucose levels, and you’ll have high cholesterol levels as the body heals the vascular system. Looking at the last 40 years (starting in the 80’s), what’s the dietary advice been? Less fat, more carbs. And we wonder why we’re seeing more diabetes and cardiovascular disease?

Also, high cholesterol on its own is only a single metric (just like blood pressure - there’ve been Olympic athletes with high cholesterol and high blood pressure…) - there’s lots more going on, and it all needs to be considered. Franky I don’t worry about cholesterol, as the single thing we can all do that has major impact to every system in our bodies, is to eat in a way to keep glucose levels stable.

I say this as someone with Type II diabetes in my immediate family, I have hypoglycemia, and Type I in the extended family. I’ve had to study up a lot over the last 20 years to keep family and myself healthy and safe.

A good intro on these things is a book by Barry Sears called “The Zone”, published in about 1994 (ignore all other Zone books, they’re marketing garbage). He’s a chemist who saw heart disease in relatively young people in his family, and went back to school for a biochemistry doctorate because he didn’t want to die young.

rotmulaaginskyrim ,

It seems the Zone diet is not scientifically proven though? based on en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zone_diet

TheBananaKing ,

My cholesterol ratio was becoming of-concern a couple of years back.

I replaced most of the animal fat in my diet with olive oil and the like, and a year later all my levels were acbsolutely fine.

I started out on kbin.social. It really had a lot of potential…until it didn’t. Now, I spend my time on lemm.ee or kbin.earth (they migrated over to mbin). Account migration would have been great, and made things a lot easier, but you live and you learn. The fediverse is a new frontier for all of us. I wish Earnest the best!

Frozyre , to fediverse in Thoughts Around KBin's Current Status and the Importance of Community Migration Features

We were seeing the warning signs already by the amount of bots and spammers who were taking over abandoned instances. They just posted a lot of garbage that filled up everywhere they went. And there was almost nobody there to deal with them. Ernest being out of action for prolonged periods didn't help this.

I really hated to see kbin social get mistreated this way considering it was my true alternative since Lemmy got mostly bombarded with former Reddit users that took that over and made it their own.

Kbin social is a learning lesson that if you're unable to maintain something due to personal problems, it is time to hand over the reigns. Ernest did do that but I'm not really sure if the person running it now knows what to do.

Been saying this for years. I’m supposed to be fine when someone wakes me up on a Saturday morning to shove Jesus up my orifice, or sends my preschooler home from school with bible pamphlets, but if I did that to them with atheism, they’d riot.

And yet somehow they’re being persecuted. Fuck them.
