Phobos is this big and still not round? Uh, what was the name, the size where stone behaves like a liquid. Well, Phobos doesn’t have that yet?

vithigar ,

Phobos is tiny. It’s just very close compared to our moon. 9500km as compared to our 384000km.

MonkderVierte ,

Ah, thanks! Also, Phobos is fast!

How perfectly moon fits between earth and the sun is one of the weirdest things about our solar system for me.

BluesF ,

Especially because it hasn’t always and it won’t forever. Humanity’s existence just happens to coincide with the period of amazing eclipses.

Ring in sick yourself. There’s clearly something going around…

WanderingSoul OP ,

I hear what you’re saying, but im the guy who doesn’t call in sick for the sake of taking a couple of days off.

Our sickness is monitored, and 1 of the guys who rang in sick is apparently being moved on soon because of his poor sickness.

Any of these are acceptable responses to being told you have pretty eyes.

lung , to linux in So I installed Arch Linux... Is this it?
@lung@lemmy.world avatar

Arch is perfect, it’s like THE Linux. It’s not really opinionated about anything, it just helps you do it. Hell you can “pacman -S apt” and slowly become a debian

That’s the magic of it: latest software, rolling release, edit some config files, do anything you want, spend half your time tweakin’

Let me ask you… Why would you do something like that? I mean, Arch is just a piece of software, why would you wanna be obsessed with or turn it your personality?

Don’t you have anything more meaninful to worry about?

Num10ck , to nostupidquestions in How come neither burps nor hiccups are usually painful, but a combination of both is?

just wanted to mention there’s now a special straw that cures hiccups for us, called hiccaway.

my_hat_stinks ,

Sounds like snake oil. Their website says you need to sip water through their straw for 3 seconds two/three times, then repeat those 3 sips up to 2 more times so that puts the effectiveness at somewhere around that of pretty much any other free home remedy. The way those instructions are written seems like it’s meant to intentionally obfuscate that fact too, it’s incredibly unnatural to say “do this thing two to three times, up to three times”.

EmoDuck ,

I’m pretty sure that the act of simply drinking something is a known remedy for hiccups. So I guess drinking through that straw does work, it’s just not because of the straw

tmpod , to asklemmy in What is your favorite YouTube channels?
@tmpod@lemmy.pt avatar

I went through my subscription list on FreeTube and filtered these out (the list was much lengthier initially :p)

  • Alt Shift X — well detailed and narrated videos about fantasy series such as Dune, ASOIAF.
  • Captain Disillusion — very well made videos about VFX.
  • Computerphile — computer science twin of Numberphile; neat videos about the field with a wide range of guests.
  • EthosLab — pretty much the only Minecraft creator I still watch; witty, quiet and virtually the same for a long time.
  • hbomberguy — well known video essayist, easily one of the best in the platform
  • Jacob Geller — another quality essayist, exploring different themes, such as horror
  • Lemino — very well known creator focusing on mysteries, with incredible narration and stunning visuals
  • LockPickingLawyer — very simple, to the point and informative channel about locks and lockpicking; also virtually unchanged for years
  • Oversimplified — great overviews of major history events and periods, with funny narration and visuals
  • Tantacrul — fairly unknown essayist on music, with well researched material and nice takes :P
  • Then & Now — possibly my favorite atm (alongside hbomberguy); extremely well researched and presented video essays about history, politics and philosophy; very underrated imo
octopus_ink , to linux in So I installed Arch Linux... Is this it?

Fresh packages all the time without any hassle or snaps/flatpak/appimages, and theoretically never needs to be reinstalled. What’s not to love.

OP was pretty fucking snarky though, ngl. Some of us enjoy using arch based distros without being walking memes, and far more people complain about people talking about arch than actually talk about arch these days.

What do you mean by people being obsessed over Arch?

Archlinux is Linux, it’s just a minimal distro that allows you to only use whatever you want to use. I have no idea what’s with being obsessed over it other than «use arch btw» which became a local meme recently.

Laser , to linux in So I installed Arch Linux... Is this it?

No longer using Arch, but I can tell you what I liked about it:

  • it basically only does what you explicitly tell it to, making the setup very flexible. There’s no stuff the OS hides behind its own tools really (resulting in little to none “DO NOT EDIT THIS FILE” situations).
  • It is very up to date and the rolling release generally works well, there’s no pain with changing releases or anything.
  • The package manager, including creating your own packages, is dead easy and fast. Caveat is that once you look deeper into it, it gets more complex as you need to keep a container for clean building around. Still, with the right tooling, it’s very manageable.
  • As already mentioned, the documentation is very good.
  • Packages are very close to upstream, in most cases just being something like “./configure; make; make install”.
  • Generally very unopinionated.
