electric_nan , to linux in How was your experience using Linux in college?

Depends on your school/classes. I had no problems. Last school I attended used MS for email etc. I got a discounted license for Office which I was able to access in the browser if/whenever LibreOffice wasn’t a good option.

possiblylinux127 ,

I tried to use MS office but Libreoffice is easier

mark3748 , to mildlyinfuriating in UPS has started charging for pickups even if you have a prepaid label

Scheduled pickups always cost more, but most businesses provide ARS (Authorized Return Service) labels that have pick up pre-paid. They saved $10 and made things inconvenient for you, so you’ll have to either pay for a pickup or drop it off at a UPS store or access point.

Source: been a field tech with several companies that use UPS exclusively. I am far more familiar with UPS than anyone ever should be.

Ah so I should be blaming the shipper, not UPS. Those chincy bastards.

ColeSloth , to nostupidquestions in Knife vs. Gun Control?

Very old laws on the books that no one has bothered to change in some states. Federally, they aren’t illegal. Federally, knives weren’t protected under the 2nd amendment so states had an easier time putting rules in place against them, and many did. My state just legalized otf and switch blades for everyone a few years ago. Mainly because unassisted knives were able to become just as quick and easy to open, it was a bit silly to leave assisted open knives not legal.

As an added note just for you: cardboard is hell on knife blades and they’ll dull them very quickly. I’d get yourself a box knife and blades f9r it if you open a lot of boxes, unless you want to sharpen a knife like twice a week.

skullgiver , to android in How come android headunits in a car boot up so fast despite being very under powered compared to phones these days ?
@skullgiver@popplesburger.hilciferous.nl avatar

The OS offers fewer services. That means developing for Android Auto is more work, some app features simply don’t work, and maintainance is even worse than on normal Android. Who needs Doze power saving when you’ve got a few dozen liters of fuel in the back? The stuff that it doesn’t do can sometimes be done by a connected phone instead, which also saves the CPU of the head unit some cycles.

Plus, the OS can be designed for fast boot. Android generally isn’t. How often do you even reboot your phone? The important part is that once it’s running, it doesn’t suck down too much power. It doesn’t really matter if it takes 30 seconds to boot because that’s 30 seconds every month. A car needs to start and be ready to use in seconds.

The infotainment screen also contains a lot of stuff that it doesn’t need to load anything for because it’s handled by another CPU running elsewhere in the car. Your infotainment system isn’t usually controlling your speedometer, window wipers, or AC, it just provides a button that sends a network packet to a bunch of other computers that take care of the featurea for you. Turning on your car actually turns on a dozen of tiny computers.

Also, your infotainment system isn’t hooked up to a 3000mAh battery. It can suck down voltage like crazy compared to phones or tablets. Outfit a mobile CPU from a few years ago with a heat sink and disable power savings and that thing will suddenly become tolerable.

Lastly, not every head unit is that fast. I’ve been in cars that took full minutes to get to a state where navigation would allow input. Android Auto and Carplay units may be slow, but they’re lightning fast compared to what car manufacturers would put in their cars if it weren’t for Big Tech’s hardware requirements.

Haha I love Gell-Mann amnesia. A few weeks ago there was news about speeding up the internet to gazillion bytes per nanosecond and it turned out to be fake.

Now this thing is all over the internet and everyone believes it.

ArcaneSlime , to nostupidquestions in Knife vs. Gun Control?

Well there are such restrictions on guns, try and get a short barrel rifle in under 30 min, the paperwork alone will take that long.

But also yeah those laws suck and shouldn’t exist. Much like the original intent behind CCW permits where the theory was “concealing is for criminals,” those knives were also seen as “for criminals.” It’s just old outdated bullshit that goes largely uncharged but can be used if they want to fuck with you. In some cases “criminals” was also synonymous with black people or even italians depending on the year lol, and were passed for racist reasons.

lemmyvore , to android in What rooting method do you use?

Magisk is a complete platform that focuses on hiding “unauthorized” modifications from the rest of the system. You can add any mods as a virtual overlay, it supports plugins etc. Root is only one of its benefits.

AmbiguousProps , to android in What rooting method do you use?

I haven’t felt the need to root custom roms for some time (especially not something like GrapheneOS, for example)

Zak ,
@Zak@lemmy.world avatar

Here are things I’m currently using root for on LineageOS:

  • System-wide adblocking (hosts file with Adaway). Yes, there’s DNS-based adblocking, but sometimes that can be slow or not play nice with public wifi networks.
  • Battery management. I use AccA to limit my battery capacity and charge rate to keep it from wearing out. I might not care as much if the battery was easy to replace.
  • File management, as there’s an increasing amount of the filesystem blocked off without it.
  • App + data backups with Neo Backup.
AmbiguousProps ,

Fair, but I guess my point was I haven’t personally needed those things in some time. At least, not enough to warrant exposing myself to vulnerability like before. Ad blocking especially, since you can do that via VPN or by using your VPN slot if you don’t want to use something like pihole. App + data backups are built into many custom roms as well, including the one I use (graphene).

Zak ,
@Zak@lemmy.world avatar

exposing myself to vulnerability

Everyone’s security and convenience/feature needs are different of course. There is often a tradeoff. The way I see it, I wouldn’t give up having admin access on my PC for security, so why would I give it up on my phone?

hexagonwin ,

Does Neo backup work well? Kinda reminds me of Titanium Backup.

BlastboomStrice ,
@BlastboomStrice@mander.xyz avatar

Yes, it’s my main back up app. (The latest update kinda broke it though, I think first time happening, but the issue was spotted and will be fixed.) The only big limitation (which might have been fixed actually) is backing up and restoring app on work profile (anything other than user0).

For work profile apps, I use DataBackup.

Zak ,
@Zak@lemmy.world avatar

Yes. There’s the occasional app it won’t back up and restore correctly (Signal is a big one; use its own chat backup feature), but overall it’s great.
