Fizz , to asklemmy in People who used older macintosh OS in the 90s, what was it like for your daily use, work, games etc?
@Fizz@lemmy.nz avatar

I had an ugly old Macintosh and it sucked because nothing I wanted worked on it and none of the things that did work were of any use.

ByteOnBikes ,

Opposite opinion. It was great for Kid Pix and and After Dark screensaver. Also I was like a little kid and was also easily amused.

SuperSpruce , to piracy in Fallacies of Youtube

My idea is to allow premium users to have third-party apps that can be more customizable. Google barely has to lift a finger, premium would get more popular, and the experience would be so much better.

intensely_human , to asklemmy in Honest question, how many of you watch the autoplaying videos on websites ?

We all do.

This is a great use of tech. With that said I find that the lines are blurred between “AI” and Machine Learning.

Real Question: Other than the specific tuning of the recognition model, how is this really different from something like Facebook automatically tagging images of you and your friends? Instead of saying "Here’s a picture of Billy (maybe) " it’s saying, “Here’s a picture of some precancerous masses (maybe)”.

That tech has been around for a while (at least 15 years). I remember Picasa doing something similar as a desktop program on Windows.

loafty_loafey ,

Kinda mean of you calling Billy precancerous masses like that smh

I’ve been looking at the paper, some things about it:

  • the paper and article are from 2021
  • the model needs to be able to use optional data from age, family history, etc, but not be reliant on it
  • it needs to combine information from multiple views
  • it predicts risk for each year in the next 5 years
  • it has to produce consistent results with different sensors and diverse patients
  • its not the first model to do this, and it is more accurate than previous methods

monobot , to mildlyinfuriating in I need new glasses. The only insurance-approved place I can shop online will cost $250 with my needs. I went to a "cheap" glasses website that doesn't accept insurance: $250. Yay, America.

I am from cheap part of Europe. While you can get glasses for 20 Euros, with those kind of requrements 250 sounds about the same.

I guess some countries might get prescription, but I doubt “light frame and light lenses with darkening” would qualify.

Basically, what I have found out since I posted this is that glasses need to be cheaper everywhere.

chiisana , to selfhosted in which git server for a company?
@chiisana@lemmy.chiisana.net avatar

I’m aware this is the selfhost community, but for a company of 20 engineers, it is probably best to use something commercial in the cloud.

Biggest pain point was for our ops guy, who constantly had to stay behind to perform upgrades and maintenance, as they couldn’t do it during business hours when the engineers are working. With a team of at least 20, scheduling downtimes could get increasingly more difficult.

It also adds an entire system to be audited by the auditors.

The selfhost vs buy commercial kind of bounces back and forth. For smaller teams, less than 5 to 10 engineers, it might be a fun endeavour; but from that point on, until you get to mega corp scale with dedicated ops department maintaining your entire infrastructure, it is probably more effective to just pay for a solution from a major vendor in the cloud instead.

catloaf ,

Git should be able to go down during the day. Worst case you just can’t push to origin for a little while. You can still work and commit locally.

swooosh OP ,

Nope. Hosting in the cloud isn’t possible due to legal reasons.

I don’t think that downtimes area serious issue for us.

Disney, Hulu & Max have a decent bundle although I don’t enjoy the $30 a month price tag for no ads. Paramount has some good content but I don’t think it’s worth the upfront cost. Apple TV & peacock aren’t worth the price especially since apple requires proprietary hardware.
