Attraction is subjective. There are norms, but everyone has their own preferences. Never listen to anyone who claims to speak for any giant group of people (gender, race, culture, whatever). Most women aren’t going to tell you that, but there are assholes in every group. If they’re speaking for themselves, that’s fine though: no one is obligated to disregard any of your attributes.

When I went bald, there were women who said bald guys aren’t attractive. But then there were some who said they were especially attractive, and most just didn’t care.

Urist , to asklemmy in Have you been stolen from?
@Urist@lemmy.ml avatar

Yes! Two days ago, someone stole my bike. That is, I had parked it (and locked it) in a bike garage monitored by CCTV at the train station where I commute and when I came back from work my bike was gone and only my broken lock was left. However, as I looked around a little the thieves had not moved it far, only down a floor into the premium “bike hotel” area that is an actual locked in area as well. So I just called the company, and they let me in and gave me my bike back.

Afterwards, I called the police to let them know someone stole my bike and that the whole ordeal was caught on cameras (they have to open an official investigation before the footage can be used due to surveillance laws). As I tried to report the theft (or attempt thereof), I had the following fun conversation with a policeman:

  • Me: Explains the circumstances of what happened.
  • Policeman: (Interrupts) "Yeah, maybe you should keep that in mind for next time."
  • Me: "Uhm what?"
  • Policeman: "Yeah, maybe you should be a little bit smarter with regards to where you put your bike."
  • Me: “Uhm OK, I just told you I put it in the designated parking spot that, as pointed out, is monitored.”

I get that they do not really care about bike theft as they account for 30% of reported thefts, but I mean come on. They obviously moved my bike (along with others, I assume) to a nearby area so they could collect them all in a van later that night and drive off unnoticed. The police could have sent one patrol there at the right time and have them caught red-handed with video footage of the entire ordeal. Incompetence and unwillingness to actually do their work is precisely why there are so many thefts to begin with. Had I said I was a shop owner and had a bike stolen, I am certain they would show up in no time.

TL;DR: Bike got stolen and the police sucks. Thankfully, the thieves sucked marginally less, so I got my bike back.

cashmaggot OP ,

a) Glad you got your bike back.

b) I know for a while they sold a thing for bikes to identify them and get stolen bikes back. But I am not sure the system really works and I think it's on a sticker. And can't you just peel off any sticker @_!

c) Cops suck hard at things they find inconvenient to them. I didn't know the reports were that high. I think it's because you're actively messing with a person's means of transportation, that they get reported so much. But nowadays cops don't show up for car accidents. So it's really hit or miss in general.

d) I loved imagining this inconspicuous scrapper-esq van that whisks away all the stolen bikes with the little punk ass thieves thinking they got you so they moved on to the next one. Maybe in you figuring out their bs they might move their bike-hotel to another space.

@LastoftheDinosaurs@reddthat.com avatar

Economic despair, political instability, and rampant nationalism are key conditions that facilitated the rise of Nazis in post-World War I Germany and are similarly contributing to the resurgence of such ideologies today. Modern times have seen these conditions fostering the rise of leaders like Donald Trump, where both he and historical figures like Hitler capitalized on themes of national decline, utilized nationalist rhetoric, exploited fears about outsiders and minorities, and exhibited authoritarian tendencies. This recurrence of historical patterns underscores how past ideologies can be revived, shaping contemporary political climates and contributing to the emergence of movements that mirror the early 20th-century Nazi regime.

seaQueue , to linux in ZRAM configuration and other tweaks for potatoes running Linux
@seaQueue@lemmy.world avatar

I wrote this years ago when I was doing a bunch of work with low ram (1gb) potato SBCs and I use it everywhere, including my 32/64gb SFF proxmox nodes: github.com/foundObjects/zram-swap

You might find the comments re: swap sizing and compression ratios handy, I’ve found that lz4 approximates to a 2.5:1 compression ratio during most workloads. On your 4gb potato I’d run something like ~2GB lz4 zram, which would work out to a ~5GB zram device. I never bothered with sysctl tuning, you generally don’t need to.

Edit: just about every Chromebook under the sun, and like 90%+ of all Android devices, runs lzo/lzo-rle zram swap at ~(½ramsize*3). Change that to *2.5 for lz4 and you’re set.

wolf OP ,

Thank you for your answer and your insights.

In my unscientific tests, sysctl/vm.page-cluster made a measurable difference (15% faster when setting it to 0), and it seems everyone else (PopOS, ChromeOS) tweaks at least this setting with ZRAM. I would assume the engineers at PopOS/ChromeOS also did some benchmarks before using this settings.

Now I really would be interested, if you would measure a difference on your 1gb potato SBCs, because IMHO it should even have a bigger impact for them. (Of course, your workload/use cases might make any difference irrelevant, and of course potato SBCs have other bottlenecks like WiFi/IO, which might make this totally irrelevant.

seaQueue , (edited )
@seaQueue@lemmy.world avatar

I don’t have my potato lab up and running at the moment but my android devices and sff hypervisors are all using page-cluster=0. That’s the default setting on android and ChromeOS I think, I probably tuned it on the proxmox machines years ago and forgot about it.

Edit: that’s basically swap read ahead right? Ie: number of pages to read from swap at a time.

wolf OP ,

To my understand it is swap read-ahead, and the number is a power for the base 2. This means the default reads 2^3 = 8 pages ahead. According to what I read, the default of 3 was set in the age of rotating discs and never adapted for RAM swap devices.

seaQueue ,
@seaQueue@lemmy.world avatar

Yeah, that’s my understanding of that sysctl too. If IOPS are cheap (and they are when dealing with ram or high IOPS NVMe) there’s no real point in performing extra read ahead.

They have kinda always been a thing. Nazi’s were just one flavor of nationalist, after all.

Charles de Gaulle defined nationalism best: “Patriotism is when love of your own people comes first; nationalism, when hate for people other than your own comes first.”

For most people, it’s extremely easy to blame others for problems of their own creation. By the same token, people who can’t see their own shortcomings will also usually latch on to leaders who are able to amplify that bias. For the Nazis, it was mostly against the jews.

Also, what you are seeing in the news is partially amplified by the news itself but also, politicians are getting more brazen in mustering the support of those groups. This has lead to people being a little more open about something that needs to stay taboo, IMHO.

SteveFromMySpace ,

These leaders all make the same promise:

Whatever is wrong in your life is not your fault, nor is it even the fault of random chance/fate/god/what have you. It not no one’s fault either. There is a clear, definable enemy called X. X is the problem, and if we just deal with X, then you will have the life you dream of. I will make sure X never hurts you again.

Boozilla ,
@Boozilla@lemmy.world avatar

Another interesting property of fascists is how their “enemy” is described in lurid but contradicting ways that don’t make any sense when you think about it for more than half a second.

One minute, the “enemy” is described as weak, pathetic, disgusting, sub-human, sickly, cowardly, stupid little losers who can’t punch out of a wet paper bag. The next minute, the “enemy” is described as threatening, all-seeing, clever, oppressive, bold and brazen, powerful, influential, dominating the government, ruining people’s lives, etc.

It’s maddening. And some people are absolute suckers for it.

Living with a friend, in the first place after moving out of our parents places. He smoked weed but that didn’t bother me. However, one night he invited in the local weed dealer and I was really concerned but he assured me it was ok.

We both worked at the same company, so came home at the same time a day or so later to find the front door was open. They smashed the small decorative window which allowed them to reach in and unlock and open the door.

I can’t remember what they stole from my friend but I lost my GameCube, controllers and all the games. Also, my first portable minidisc player and a pair of cheap earphones I used with them which I absolutely loved. The wire was like string and rarely tangled.

I had a few imported US games and I thought they might give me the edge. I rang all the local game shops to see if anyone had tried to bulk sell the lot but I was unlucky.

I think the ideal solution is to leave. But you don’t have to fight to get to super competitive places. There are a lot of other countries out there with easier immigration policies, including developed western countries. Instead of obvious places like the US, UK, etc - have you considered less visited but developed countries like Argentina, Uruguay, Hungary, Latvia, whatever? These are likely a lot easier to immigrate to.
