“Kamala”

Rolando , to asklemmy in What to do with an Android spare smartphone (no sim card)?

When I went on vacation, I left my phone behind and took along an old smartphone with no sim card. I used the smartphone as a camera. It still received a GPS signal and I loaded off-line maps so I could use Google Maps. When I was at the hotel in the evening I checked my email and looked up local information with wifi and played games on it. But work couldn’t call me, which was nice.

bc3114 ,

So… like a mini iPad mini?

Yep!

Surprised to not see FTL mentioned yet.

I’m loving the track Balatro has too. I wish that game had more music like the one song it has.

MajorHavoc , to asklemmy in Stupid example, bigger problem. How to overcome this?

I’ve hated every piece of art I ever created, and everything I ever wrote, until at least a few weeks later.

I’ve learned to control the impulse to delete, until the thing is about a month old.

But I give myself permission to delete anything older than a month old, that I still don’t like.

I also try to only delete stuff by percentage. So if I’m pruning old art or articles, I’ll enforce only deleting the 20% I dislike the most.

This way I know that any piece of work I really hate, I’ll give myself permission to get rid of, eventually, if I still really hate it, later.

The Nitronic Rush soundtrack is some really awesome techno. It feels very Tron-esque at times.

Spiritfarer has an excellent soundtrack, which is utterly wasted on such a mediocre game.

As an added bonus, some of the tracks on the OST are longer than you’ll ever experience in game because they cut them short for some reason.

Waveform , to games in Good game soundtracks?

The Ys series OSTs, especially the PSP titles. Nice mix of metal and violin.

Hollow Night. The City of Tears track in particular.

Any covers made by Orchestral Fantasy on YouTube. He focuses mainly on classic 16-bit titles and pretty much nails each one.

Nice mix of metal and violin.

Juuuuust in case you’re not already familiar with symphonic metal… It’s pretty fuckin great.

Waveform ,

I do like symphonic metal, and that’s a great song… it gave me goosebumps. I’ll be sure to check out more of Blind Guardian’s work. Any other suggestions are welcome! Maybe stuff similar to Epica’s Omega album, and instrumental pieces similar to Essence of Datum, Mohamed Shawky, Rivers of Nihil, & Naxatras, if you’ve got the time :D

Sterile_Technique , (edited )
@Sterile_Technique@lemmy.world avatar

Blind Guardian is pretty hit-and-miss: their shit lands somewhere on a spectrum of metal to renaissance-faire lol. Sacred Worlds is another one of my favorites.

All of Metallica’s S&M album is solid fucking gold, but the best (imo) song from it almost never gets the spotlight, so it’s tragically easy to miss: No Leaf Clover

Avenged Sevenfold isn’t symphonic metal, but they’ve got two songs that at least dip their toes in that water: The Stage, and Little Piece of Heaven.

Epica

If you know Epica you’re probably already familiar with Nightwish, but in case your not… well, Nightwish. Most of their music is more similar to Omega than the one I’m about to link, but this specific song is just so fucking weird, I love it: Scaretale. Definitely check out their other songs too!

Essence of Datum / Naxayras

You’d probably like Pelican - kind of ambient rock. Or Russian Circles, which is similar but more mellow.

Mohamed Shawky

Not familiar, and the only Mohamed Shawky’s I’m seeing on YouTube are a physicist and an athlete. Judging entirely by the name, I’m guessing it’s got some Arabic vibes, and the best I’ve got there is the first one I linked, Wheel of Time, mostly because of the intro… Antti Martikainen has some Arabic sounding songs - that dude’s music is ALL over the place… I recall one being a kind of Arabic metal that I could have SWORN was called “Ancient Worlds” but searching that isn’t coming up with anything. He does have Arabic hybrid sci-fi music lol. Skim that dude’s channel, and brace for a musical roller coaster.

Rivers of Nihil

Hmm, maybe try Lorna Shore, especially Pain Remains. Lorna Shore is WAY too throaty-howler-monkey-shit for me personally, but fortunately they’ve got instrumental versions too.

Waveform ,

Thanks a lot for the recommendations! Lots of interesting things here, and I’ll be diving in very soon.

Mohamed Shawky goes by ‘chusss’ on YouTube. here’s one I like: m.youtube.com/watch?v=h-x0x41dsfM

Yeah, I’ve heard of Nightwish. Not my favorite, but last time I went looking I was trying to find pieces closer to Epica’s Omega album… and not even Epica’s older work was what I was looking for…

priapus , to piracy in I used to love Android but I want to move, and I don't know if it's the right thing.

Samsung is garbage IMO, and OnePlus has been getting worse for years. Pixels offer the smoothest experience. Nothing phones are really nice too.

Wdym about the gifs? there should be nothing stopping you from sending those on any device.

Sideloading is possible, but there’s more hoops to jump through than on Android. Plus an overall smaller amount of apps available to sideload.

Piracy depends on what you’re pirating. TV/Movie wise you’ll be fine, as well as ROMs for the few emulators iOS has (relative to android). I doubt you’ll have any luck with apps or mobile games.

TheDuckPrince OP ,

I forward gif from channel that maybe are marked as NSFW, I know that also some content creator makes 2 channel on telegram because if they are marked as NSFW are not shown on ios anymore.

Pixel are really expensive and I read that the 7 pro gets really hot, and I don’t like it, while the 8 it’s a bit small after the s22+

Amongussussyballs100 ,

Pixels second hand are decently cheap from my experience

TheDuckPrince OP ,

As I said to someone, pixel 7 is affordable for me, but I’m afraid of the overheat, the G2 seems really terrible soc

hasty3827 ,

Like the other guy said, used/refurbished pixels are pretty good deals. The overheating is a bit overblown, yes some people get a bad device but you can just return it if it’s really bad. My experience with the pixel 7/ 7 pro is that it’s very smooth and don’t notice any overheating even in hot climate, and Android 14 and also the upcoming 15 updates helps with heat and battery significantly.

TheDuckPrince OP ,

I’m really afraid of this, I’ve seen a video of a pixel 7 pro that stop a videocall on telegram for the overheating issue. I just can stand this, because I sometimes travel and I want to take picture and long long videos…

Gailthesnail2 ,

There are mountains of complaints in the googlepixel sub about the terrible tensor chip. Not sure why so many here are ignoring the inefficiency and overheating. The modem is also really bad

wildflower , to technology in What's with all the hate for Chinese phones?

I have an old Huawei P7, and when it breaks, I will not buy a Chinese phone again, and it’s not because of price or quality.

I don’t like how China is helping Russia invade Ukraine, and for that alone, I won’t support a Chinese company, I used to buy a lot of components in china, now I get them local or from another EU country.

Thavron , to asklemmy in Stupid example, bigger problem. How to overcome this?
@Thavron@lemmy.ca avatar

Sounds like you need to learn to enjoy the process instead of the end result. Even when something is unfinished, it isn’t useless because you either enjoyed making it or it was simply practicing a skill.

some_guy ,

This. I’m constantly tweaking things to make them more and more of what I desire. But also the comment about waiting and checking back after a period of time sounds pretty good.

Worst case: find someone you can talk to about it.
