silverchase , to games in Where do you find new games nowadays? (Both singleplayer + multiplayer)
@silverchase@sh.itjust.works avatar

Nowadays? If you want to get a game in my face, it has to be via word of mouth or be blown in by the winds of Steam.

I took a look through my game library and these are the broad categories of how a game ended up there.

  • Friends (though I tend to be the recommender for my friends)
    • Path of Exile, Cobalt Core
  • I liked the demo at Steam Next Fest
    • Moonlight Pulse, Laika: Aged Through Blood, Cassette Beasts
  • Announcement through a game I already like
    • Jackbox series, Slayers X, Vertigo 2
  • YouTube channels
    • Game Maker’s Toolkit: Neon White, Toodee and Topdee, Assault Android Cactus
    • From other channels, but I don’t remember which: Gunfire Reborn, A Short Hike, Bug Fables
  • Sheer luck
    • I found Corn Kidz 64 from a tile at the bottom of a Steam store page, before it was released
    • I found Hypnospace Outlaw from Steam’s discovery queue…
    • …and following through the music credits got me to Queenjazz’s Bandcamp site, where I found an OST for a different game, Grapple Dog!

Lack of financial responsibility.

vzq , to nostupidquestions in How Do You Explain to a Fully Grown Adult That Constantly Mocking Others' Appearance (Even on TV) is Toxic Behavior?

My wife told one my nephews who kept making disparaging comments at the tv “cut that shit out. In this house everyone is allowed to be the way they are”.

I think that’s a useful model for this conversation.

ilovecheese OP ,
@ilovecheese@feddit.uk avatar

I tried that kind of approach yesterday.

Their response was to mock someone else on TV.

I’ve mentioned it a couple of times now. Last time I told them even if they cant see the issue with it, it bothers me and other people, so cut it out.

The response was something like “yeah other person says that to me too”.

That’s when I start to wonder why I bothered.

vzq ,

Yes, the difference is that this is aunt to nephew in aunt’s house. There is a definite power differential at work there, so all that’s left to do is to set the norm in a clear but respectful way.

If you don’t have that, and they don’t want to listen, then it’s hard to get through. Things are necessarily going to get either a lot more protracted or a lot less friendly.

ilovecheese OP ,
@ilovecheese@feddit.uk avatar

I’m prepared to lose contact with people that are problematic or toxic, especially those with the more radical views, but it’s not nice to watch someone I’ve known for many years gradually lose all their friends for similar reasons.

lord_ryvan ,

I think that works on kids where you’re their superior, not on random adults who might view you as equal or even below them.

Silentiea ,

Still works in your house, but you might have to make the problematic person leave.

    Based on many other things, and that was my first response too, I don’t think they are capable of self reflection enough for that to sink in.

    Seems to be a worrying trend these days.

    IzzyScissor ,

    Unfortunately, in a lot of these cases, they’re treating people poorly because they either expect to be or think they deserve to be treated like that too. They justify their self-hatred by projecting it onto other people.

    The answer you’ll hear is, “Well, no, but SOMEONE has to tell them the truth.”

    LarkinDePark , to asklemmy in Toy/game makers often list skills children learn while playing them. What skills would adult games develop?

    With RTS games. Planning, allocating scarce resources efficiently, patience, responsibility and self criticism, strategic thinking, deductive reasoning, multitasking.

    blind3rdeye , (edited ) to asklemmy in What are your favorite open-source games?

    Widelands is a great strategy / building game. The gameplay and UI style is a niche - but that’s one of the things I like about it. It’s doing something different to most games.

    (The gameplay is similar to Settlers 2; before that franchise changed direction.)

    [edit] But the open-source game I’ve spent the most time playing would be OpenXcom-extended, with xpiratez. That game is truly huge.
