Protip: Use Conduit instead of Synapse. It’s significantly lighter than Synapse, easier to run, and I guess you can be a cool kid by running something written in Rust. The documentation is even worse though :/ conduit.rs

Dendrite is still in beta and isn’t feature-complete. I tried all three (Synapse, Dendrite and Conduit) and Conduit worked the best for me - I found it to be the most reliable and use the least amount of RAM. It also uses an embedded database (RocksDB) which makes setup a bit easier.

I tried joining several large Matrix rooms from my server, and the experience with Synapse was dreadful. It was using 100% of one core for long periods of time. In some cases it would just fall over and not join the room. Dendrite and Conduit are better in that regard.

Conduit’s weak point is its documentation. I had to read Synapse’s documentation to understand a few key concepts. I’ve been meaning to help write docs for Conduit but just haven’t had time. I’ve got a PR to improve the styling of the docs at least, but need to do some tweaks to it.

kittenzrulz123 , to linux in Buying a new computer to run Linux on - suggestions?

Get a Librebooted Thinkpad T440p or similar and then upgrade it (SSD, 16gb ram, etc).

lud ,

Or a normal booted ThinkPad if you don’t really care about that (I personally don’t) it will be able to run Linux regardless.

kittenzrulz123 ,

Yeah but if a laptop is old enough to support Libreboot that means it was released before Lenovo messed it up

lud ,

How did they mess up?

Also isn’t a laptop from 2014 (?) kinda pushing it when it comes to laptops?

I can’t be much more expensive to get a laptop that’s much better in pretty much every way.

Unrelated but I really wish modern ThinkPads had a think light.

kittenzrulz123 ,

I’m pretty sure the T440p is the newest one and it’s 2013. They messed up in the sense that modern Thinkpads are starting to solder components and overall the build quality is worse.

lud ,

Maybe the build quality is a bit worse but it’s not bad. My x280 is doing great and I would absolutely not replace it with an older machine (even if that machine had a think light)

And I much rather have soldered components from 2018 (or something) than non soldered from a decade ago

But sure, there is nothing wrong with running old machines yourself. I just wouldn’t recommend it to people that ask for a laptop unless they specifically request it.

kittenzrulz123 ,

Repairability and upgradability are incredibly important factors, when my computer breaks why should I need to buy a new one? Heck why should it break at all, old computers were built to last.

lud ,

I agree. I have even replaced the screen on my x280 to a IPS screen (because the old one was a crap TN screen) and the storage.

I wish newer machines were more repairable and I would buy a framework if I could afford it and if they had more ports. Fortunately most machines don’t break that often and very rarely is it in a part that couldn’t be replaced by a skilled technician (excluding some shitty products like Apple computers). Most business tier laptops like Lenovo ThinkPads and Dell Latitudes (5xxx and 7xxxx series at least) are fairly repairable and durable.

Upgradability is also great but doesn’t make a lot of sense to worry about when the machine is a decade old and still crap performance wise even if you gave it a few more GBs of RAM. You can’t really upgrade anything beyond storage and ram in any laptops unfortunately.

I wouldn’t consider a decade old computer no matter how repairable, durable, or how upgradable it is unless I worked exclusively in a TTY or some shit and I believe most feel the same way.

You do you, but I still don’t think it’s a good suggestion for someone that just needs a computer. Especially when they want good battery life and compactness. Neither of which computers that old are good at.

Mine is a collection of notes that I want to reference later. Sometimes I share a link with someone who is interested in the same topic.

The front couple of pages have my social media biography and a link to my public resume. Stuff that looks good if a potential employer searches for my name.

The rest is poorly organized notes for my own future reference. Admittedly, “I wrote a blog article on that. I’ll send you the link.” is a common phrase I utter, to friends, in person. I never check back if they read it. Once in an incredibly long time someone later tells me it was pretty helpful.

I did setup a bot to automatically post links onto my existing Mastodon account, from my RSS feed. I’ve gotten occasional positive feedback on Mastodon, for doing so.

I’ve never used a veg for these purposes and I’m not planning to. I would definitely not recommend it to anyone, and I would recommend be very mindful of the hygiene of any objects you decide to insert for whatever reason- speaking from experience here, UTIs are no fun.

Most people don’t use vegetables for this afaik.

That aside, the only girl who ever confided in me that she used a veg (a banana btw) also said she put it in a condom. She said she would bin it all afterwards and this sounds like what someone reasonable enough would do. I’d be grossed out if I was to eat something used for that and I’d feel awful to have my family eat something used that way. Just no.

ByteOnBikes OP ,

Thank you for the honest response! I sincerely appreciate it.

Reflecting on your answer, that would make complete sense. Why wouldn’t a person use a condom? My wife has explained how concerned she is about UTIs, and adding that veggie bacteria would be concerning.

I’m starting to feel like my veggies are safe.

Mouselemming ,

Also most young teens would be a little intimidated by a cucumber. A carrot or banana is more likely, since they’ve probably seen a condom on one before.

As for the 3 hours, it’s long but by no means impossible.

JovialMicrobial ,

I havent seen anyone mention this, but cucumbers have little sharp spikes/spines on their skin so that’d be a huge no for the vast majority of people, and those little spikes would probably rip any condom stretched over it.

Very few people are gonna be into fucking themselves with something that’s got tiny thorns on it…unless they go out of their way to remove them without peeling it entirely I guess.

Seems like a lot of work though.

OhmsLawn ,

Any decent person would trash it afterwards.

MutilationWave ,

That’s just wasteful. I would totally eat it after washing.

pete_the_cat ,

I’m a dude and a cucumber definitely doesn’t seem like it would feel great going in and out. It’s bumpy and the skin is pretty coarse. A banana definitely sounds like a more logical choice.

IronKrill ,

Nah, you haven’t lived until you’ve experienced the girth and texture of a garden cucumber.

I used to grow cucumbers. Garden cucumbers have a rep for flavour and texture, not girth. That’s a nice looking cucumber there, good job.

I used it as a way to share very limited interesting events with family and friends. Instead of posting to Facebook, I would post maybe a half dozen blog/photo updates a year. Those that asked and really wanted to know what I was up to could go look at it.

90% of my views came from some dude in Japan who thought I was beautiful. I’m no newb to the internet so the only photos of me were at a distance and while I was wearing hats and sunglasses. I had no identifying information on there, but didn’t trust all my friends and family not to put something in the comments. So I pulled it down.

BlueAitoKan77, I’m sure you were beautiful too but no thank you. (Not their actual handle, obfuscated some for their privacy)

lemuria ,

That’s crazy. 90% of views from a single person. How often does this happen usually?

Vanth ,
@Vanth@reddthat.com avatar

It was just a website meant for friends and families so view count was always going to be super low. He would view each post several times and comment on almost all of them multiple times over the course of months, so I could tell he was going back to my site again and again.

I’ve never had that happen before or since, but nor have I tried!

Mothra , to asklemmy in What Do You Use Your Personal Website For?

I guess this depends largely on what you do for a living. I use mine as a personal portfolio. It allows me to create galleries of work that can’t be made public. I can also create a new gallery with specific curated content if I need to for a specific job application. I also host my CV and some basic info in my About page. I could blog on it too but I’m not a blog type of person.

+1 here, just a personal portfolio for my books. Or what I call a “site vitrine” in French (showcase website) so it is a very simple mostly static website.

You shouldn’t use a reverse proxy for this. Just setup a VPN or a mesh VPN like netbird.
