Manjaro for the best 🥰

Manjaro + SteamOS. Wanted to refresh myself on gaming with Linux/Proton prior to the Deck launch and Manjaro seemed the most similar. Helped that my Win11 install decided to crash explorer.exe every 5 seconds around the same time.

OnePlus 7T

I love this phone. I thought it’d take longer than it actually did to get used to not having a home button anymore, but I adapted in less than an hour. Love how OxygenOS is very close to stock Android. The glass on the back is super slick. Everything is super slick to me. My hands are chronically dry. So I hate all these glass-backed phones.

I’ve previously used a OnePlus 3, OnePlus One, Samsung Galaxy S4, Motorola Photon 4G, and a Motorola RAZR ve20. I loved my Galaxy. It was my first OLED experience. My OnePlus One felt like kind of a downgrade, but it also allowed me to stop having to sign contracts to get an affordable phone in 2015. Plus, back then, it felt like being a part of something new and exciting. Man I miss Cyanogenmod.

I upgrade basically whenever I need to. The phone I have now is ~3½ years old. The back glass is busted and the battery is starting to lose its life. They will repair it and so I’m thinking of sending it in. I can picture myself using this phone on another 3-4 years barring some kind of carrier stupidity.

No other Android devices. I’m an otherwise Windows/Ubuntu person. Started trying Mint recently. I do have a Fitbit.

I used to have a 4th gen iPod Touch circa 2011 before I got my Photon 4G. iOS 6 ran like crap on it and I was around the corner from building my first PC. I had started using my Android phone for my games and music and such so I just didn’t have a use for it anymore. Sold it off and I haven’t owned an Apple product since.

elonspez ,

Repair it for how much? Why not buy a newer but not so new OnePlus instead? e.g. OnePlus 9

I had a 6T, used it for almost 4 years, and then it became laggy with bad battery life, so I recently upgraded to a 9

0xCAFE , to books in Trying to get into reading, need suggestions

Hm. Some fantasy stories / books I really enjoyed and recommend are:

Eragon by Christopher Paolini. Just awesome. The pacing is gentle but a lot higher compared to The Hobbit or The Lord Of The Rings. One of the best fantasy stories I know, I read all the books multiple times. Warning: Don’t watch the movie. Just don’t.

The Idhún’s Memories by Laura Gallego. I’ve read them a long time ago, so I don’t know if I’d still enjoy them that much, but I’ve great memories.

I didn’t read The Name Of The Wind yet, but it was recommended to me multiple times as THE best book.

If you don’t mind science-fiction, I also would recommend Children Of Time by Adrian Tchaikovski.

Side note: Fantasy is quite a heavy genre if you’re not really into reading yet. Often the good books are large, which makes it harder to finish in a reasonable time. General tipp: try to read one hour a day. This creates a habit and you will soon read a lot faster, which makes it a lot easier to just grind through a book as if it was nothing. Also try different genres, maybe one doesn’t sound appealing, but you would enjoy it anyway.

BreakNeckJim ,

The name of the wind is absolutely one of the best fantasy books ever written, the only thing is that the author is not likely to finish the series anytime soon. The second book in the triology came out in 2011 and still has no date for the third to be released :/

LG G8 here, quad DAC with the high impedance trick is king, no other phone can get even close to these things 🤯. We only have Sony and Asus now and they aren’t as great as LG’s jack.

I don’t even care about the DAC that much, mostly only listen to podcasts.

I just need that jack!

I used 4chan when I was younger but trying to go back after reddit was super depressing, I lasted about 5 minutes.

toadmode ,

4chan definitely got worse. like it was always edgy and stupid, but after 2015 every board just kind of became /pol/

totallynotsocsa ,

I stopped using 4chan when the probability of getting goddamn CP snuff videos in the browser cache because of a /b/ raid got beyond trivial, so like pretty fucking early on.

I kinda grew out of it. It was funny when I was an edgy teenager but it got progressively more cringeworthy as time progressed for me, even though the content may not have changed much.

I stopped engaging with Reddit when meme-ification happened.Wheb it became all about the lolz abd short pithy responses, I started using it to find more interesting articles. Gone are the days wheb the average Redditor would read and make thoughtful contributions.

That depended on the subs you were in IMO, there was a lot of that but there were others that still had worthwhile stuff that wasn’t just silly shitposting for fun. Now we’ve got Lemmy though and multiple instances of it!

I was thinking of creating a Scottish lemmy instance, but someone seems to have bought both lemmy.scot and feddit.scot domains. I hope they actually do something with them, but seeing they have bought both of them, it doesn’t seem promising. Any other .scot domain ideas would be nice.

Yes please, we need startrekmemes!

library_patron , to selfhosted in Are all these thousands of lemmy servers useless?

Every server just has a cache … there is no profit for the whole network …

I wouldn’t say that caching is no profit. Yesterday there were several times when lemmy.ml was struggling or effectively down for some people, but despite complaints over there I could read lemmy.ml communities just fine through my instance. Caching meant that I was isolated from the service interruption, and the lemmy.ml server was isolated from my contribution to its load.

Averrin OP ,
@Averrin@lemmy.world avatar

As I said, there is no profit from empty instances. Of course, the federation itself is good and fail-proof in this way. But if nobody asks for this cache, it’s just an Internet Archive of a sort.

zergling_man ,

It only takes one user for an instance to not be empty. Every bit of decentralisation adds resilience to the whole. But more decentralisation adds more resilience, so let’s try to spread out the communities and users.
