Sounds like something Zuck thunked up to EEE us tbh.

Wheeljack ,

Full agree. Get his product's name as part of the general term and it'd confuse people into thinking it was the original.

artillect ,
@artillect@kbin.social avatar

The term has actually been rolling around for a few weeks, it's just used to describe Lemmy and Kbin, since they're based around threads instead of twitter-like posts. Nothing to do with Threads by Meta

Jajcus , to nostupidquestions in Does not having any social media presence have any negative impact on a person's social life?

Depends on a person and their social circle. I hardly have any social life apart from the on-line interactions and infrequent in-person meetings with on-line friends. And it is not like I stopped having friends when the internet appeared, on the contrary.

Social media getting shittier and shittier directly affects my social life. I hope something good for this purpose appears soon and at least some of my friends and acquaintances move there, like they moved to Facebook years ago.

lemminer , to linux in What developments in the Linux world are you looking forward to the most?
  • At the least Nvidia hardware gets full support for Linux. Which in turn would help me run Wayland on daily bases.
  • Ease at implementing secure boot for Linux.
  • Torification/I2P being used as standard to use and adapt applications running on linux for internet access.
OsrsNeedsF2P ,

I2P by default would be a hilarious F U to surveillance

fugepe ,

its Nvidias fault not Linux. Bitch to them

Eelviny ,

I get you on the NVIDIA side of things, but as another commenter mentioned, it’s an NVIDIA problem, not a Linux one, and I really don’t see it being solved. I finally gave in and replaced a perfectly functional 3070Ti with a 7900XT and damn, wish I’d done this a long time ago! Just works straight out of the box with wayland.

Epicurus0319 , (edited ) to nostupidquestions in What are tankies? What does sea-lioning mean?

Tankies are either:

  • Blue-haired white college kids from high-income families going through the commie phase that many go through due to academia’s fascination with at least the theory of it and the fact that such students start out spending most of what little free time they have online
  • The stereotypical basement-dwelling, probable-chomo neckbeards with BO who moderate large subreddits, unironically believe that work should be abolished and never socially matured past high school. Examples include Doreen Ford and awkwardtheturtle.
  • Edgy American 13-year-olds from high-income families who just discovered politics and chose (their idea of) communism over nazism and unironically stan Putin because they think he’s fighting something something gay/pronouns (which totally aren’t despised in Ukraine too)- as well as many other free and fair governments like North Korea and the Chinese Communist Party.

And sealioning is a type of internet trolling where you repeatedly make incessant, bad-faith attempts to “just have a debate” and then ignoring all responses unread.

Nuuskis9 , to linux in What developments in the Linux world are you looking forward to the most?

A file picker which doesn’t hurt my brains. I’m also looking to avoid tinkering as much as possible with CosmicOS + Virgo laptop.

CanadaPlus , to explainlikeimfive in ELI5: Israel - Palestine Conflict

The tricky thing is that if you go back as far as the Israelis want to, there’s no difference between them and the Palestinians. They’re both descendant groups of the people that were in the area at the time, as well as people those groups encountered later on.

My own hot take is that it’s a small chunk or rock and dirt that predates all of us, and maybe we should just share it fairly equally on a person-by-person basis. Pretty much all the Israelis would object to that, though, and some of the Palestinians. So the blood flows.

CoachDom OP ,
@CoachDom@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

Not a hot take at all, my friend. 100% agree with this. You will have white Americans claiming it’s their land and refuse entry to Mexicans, but if you go back couple of hundreds years ago, they were the “aliens”/immigrants. Same in Australia or Canada and many other places. No matter who claims the land right now, you can go back in history and find out they are not the actual natives.

CanadaPlus , (edited )

Except maybe the Khoi-San of the Kalahari desert in southern Africa. For whatever reason nobody is talking about putting them in charge.

Sadly, most of the population here and worldwide either doesn’t understand this take or disagrees with it, so it kind of is hot.

Nefyedardu , to linux in What is the most opinionated linux distro?

Quick example: When I install a new OS, the first thing I want to do is install Brave. That should be as easy as “click on this thing, type in brave, select Brave, install.”

Why would you expect that from Linux, that's not even how it works on Windows lol. Basically every Linux distro comes with a software center these days, so that shouldn't be a concern.

Someone who wants to be able to get up and running without having to learn how to manage the OS using the cli.

Your usage of the CLI will be determined by how much stuff you want to do. If all you want to do is use a browser, than any distro will work. If you are a techie that uses a bunch of peripherals and like the latest greatest hardware, I would recommend Endeavor because your hardware will be better supported and installing drivers from the AUR is easy. If you are OK with a slight learning curve with the benefit of having a stable distro you don't have to mess with, I would recommend Fedora Silverblue or Kinoite.

MangoPenguin ,
@MangoPenguin@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

Technically on windows you do just search for brave, click the download link and install it, and you’re done.

Nefyedardu ,

Through Windows Store? Do people use that? When I used Windows I always just searched the internet for installers

MangoPenguin ,
@MangoPenguin@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

Either way, searching Google for brave is also a download and install with a click or two.

I used to do it when phones had smaller touch screens. Now I type with both thumbs. That is a lot faster than swiping with one finger

atocci OP ,
@atocci@kbin.social avatar

A lot of keyboards have a one-hand mode that really helped and kept me using the swipe typing even as the screens kept getting bigger.

IchNichtenLichten , to nostupidquestions in What are tankies? What does sea-lioning mean?
@IchNichtenLichten@server1.duluth.lol avatar

One thing about sealioning that I haven’t seen mentioned yet is that it’s a tactic designed to utterly exhaust the other person by asking question after question with no willingness to listen to the answers. It’s there to waste time and grind down your opponent until they have had enough of your bullshit and tell you to fuck off. At that point you can feign offense and declare victory.

CodeMonkeyDance ,

A quick jab can help cure sealioning.

MrMcMisterson , to nostupidquestions in Do you use the swipe to type feature on your phone?

I thought it was going to be next level when I first saw it, maybe a decade ago. Tried it, did not like it at all.

Wheeljack , to nostupidquestions in Does not having any social media presence have any negative impact on a person's social life?

Depends entirely on the person and what things they want out of a social life.

For me, if I didn't have social media, there's a lot I'd miss out on. It's how two of my main social communities communicate any of their events, and it's a big part of a third. There would definitely be a negative impact for me if I nuked all my accounts.

You can certainly build your life to have your definition of a thriving social life without it, but you'll have to go out of your way to find those groups that use other methods for communication.
