Mumble in combination with XMPP is the most hassle free and low resource option. Just for small personal use snikket.org XMPP is probably the best.

Matrix Synapse also works, but if you join any large rooms it will blow up ram and storage space usage, thus I can’t really recommend it.

@savoy@lemmygrad.ml avatar

For Matrix, I’d recommend https://gitlab.com/famedly/conduit over synapse, with the expectation that all of synapse’s features haven’t yet been added (most notably support for spaces, which may or may not be a dealbreaker).

It’s incredibly easy to set-up and very lightweight. I never self-hosted synapse due to how resource-heavy it is, and constantly had issues with dendrite racking up resources as well.conduit has honestly been the easiest thing I’ve self-hosted.

What front-end are you running with conduit? I just spent two hours trying to get element to talk to it but i've put it off due to so much failure with it.

I’m curious what you don’t like about iOS. I started out on Android, switched to iOS and never looked back. I realized I was doing most customization in Android to feel like iOS lol. the privacy upgrade is priceless imo.

_MoveSwiftly ,

iOS is not private, it’s secure.

Private: Only you can see it, the servicing company does not. In the case, Apple not only sees your data but sells it too.

Secure: The data is protected from unwanted access by 3rd party vendors.

These are rough definitions though.

gimlithepirate OP ,

Yeah, this is what concerns me.

Stock Android is neither. So for the average user, Apple iOS is probably better.

I’m on lemmy so I’m probably not the average user lol.

gimlithepirate OP ,

Pure personal preference. I’ve traditionally gone back and forth almost every time I get a new phone. It’s really only in the last 2-3 years I’ve hit the point I significantly prefer android.

For me, some of the interface choices on iOS are no Bueno. Additionally, the lack of a button, or simulated button is not something I’m fond of.

I’m also not convinced they are more private. I think Apple’s incentives line up more with mine than Google’s, but only barely. Independent researchers are pretty mixed on whether Apple is actually blocking all apps, or just making it so Apple is the only one who can profit off of people’s data.

The only reason I think they are probably more private is the giant hissy fit Facebook threw over their settings.

nick_99 , to selfhosted in Does Anyone Host a Discord Alternative? Like a Matrix/Synapse Server?

I run ejabberd for myself and my family/friend and use conversations on android. Mattermost I would say is the most like discord. I run one of those as well and love it.

sneakyninjapants ,

I think ejabberd or another other xmpp server would have been my first choice for a service like this by a long shot. If only we had some good iOS clients to go to. While I’m on android, most of the family and some of the friends use iOS, so it was kind of a non-starter from that alone.

I would use Firefox Mobile over the Samsung browser. Samsung is still chromium based and Firefox puts more priority on user privacy.

If you can switch messaging and group chats to Signal or Telegram, that’d be a good move as well.

Otherwise App Tracking Protection is probably the best thing you can do for privacy.

gimlithepirate OP ,

Went to signal awhile ago, mainly because it’s secure and cross platform.

kira ,

Signal is bad for privacy. You need to enter your phone number and it has centralized server
I use Matrix. It requires only email and is decentralized

nodsocket ,

This is a very informative post, thanks for sharing. Although Signal is still way better than SMS and probably also closed source apps like WhatsApp, the leakage of metadata on a centralized server is a problem that needs to be addressed.

That being said, there is some evidence that Signal isn’t collecting metadata based on the fact that it has published its responses to subpoenas and did not provide that information.

furrowsofar , to technology in What are your favorite browser extensions?

Question: Does anyone know what security and privacy extensions are considered redundant in light of recent Firefox improvements in the past few years?

For example, I saw several people recommend Privacy Badger for example. I thought I heard somewhere that was considered not needed now. I do not know for sure so am frankly confused by this and some of the other extensions which I too use to use.

For me I have kind of stopped using most security/privacy extensions except uBlockOrigin and then just configuring Firefox rather tightly. Not sure if this is best approach or not. On one hand every extension increases the attack surface and the uniqueness of the browser so there is a point about less is better, on the other hand some may be useful too.

Thoughts? Thanks.

osier ,

AFAIK you don't need HTTPS Everywhere as Firefox has a built-in setting for that, and Ublock Origin covers most privacy extensions when using "hard mode" like Privacy Badger, Ghostery, DDG Privacy Essentials, ClearURLs....

the devil is in the details and how u choose to implement your system efficiently.

i guess one strategy is if u just need to have a smooth experience u can rapidly cut out cruft. this would lead to a much simpler experience and u would still retain a fair amount of privacy.
personally… i would rather have all privacy switches available… even if i rarely choose to have them enabled.

    @hydra@lemmy.world avatar

lemmy.world has been defederated at least by beehaw.org. If you want to participate there you will indeed have to make an account in another instance. IDK about other instances though. Also sometimes posts don’t propagate to other instances since population here just exploded. Lemmy’s software stack is being developed to handle the higher demand better.

    Hedup ,

It would be cool to have some sort of federation map, that shows which communities have federated and which have not. Maybe it already exists?

EDIT: After a quick google I found this article

    …blogspot.com/…/the-map-of-fediverse.html

    that mentions

    fediverse.space

which should show which instances are federated. But at the moment it doesn’t seem to work for me. Just loads infinitely until “something went wrong” pops up.
