Proton for personal email. Not immediately needing to escape but once my free email runs out of storage I plan to switch to something else because of the concerns raised by the incident with the French climate activist.

IIRC they warn people not to use recovery emails if they’re concerned about leaking information, idk why though

Baguette , to pcgaming in Which game made you realize PC was superior platform to Console (or/and viceversa)?

There’s no such thing as the superior platform. The pc vs console war is long dead

If I enjoy a game, it doesn’t matter whether its on pc, my phone, or some console. I’ve had a blast with the ds and the wii (still my favorite consoles to date), Ive also had a lot of fun on pc.

kylian0087 , to selfhosted in Selfhost and play Spotify playlists

Yes kind of but it is not strictly allowed and can be considered piracy. Their are some tools for this available on github that can save songs as mp3. Then you can play them in any audio player you like. If you want to know the name of one of those tools just send me a DM.

Not yet, but it has OpenVPN. I think they plan to add Wireguard in the upcoming 3.x release.

Back in the day a pc was easier to get than an Xbox. I just had to figure out which $60 pci video card was good for games then boom, better gaming and in glorious 1024x768. Then I figured out pc games can have mods and that was the end of consoles for me.

I would like to give a proper try to a tiling window manager. I would like to try QTile, but I haven’t gone through the documentation to understand how to customize it properly. Currently, I use GNOME (and actually, I like it a lot). Also, I love TMUX, and the idea of having the same flexibility and keyboard-centric experience on a broader level makes me think that I will love a tiling window manager when I try it. I’m interested in QTile because I know it’s configured in Python (which is a programming language I already know), and apparently, it can be used on either X or Wayland. Have you ever tried using it on Wayland? Does it work properly? Besides QTile, what else would you recommend?

xor ,

I’m a big sway fan - it’s the Wayland equivalent for i3

Customisation takes a bit of time (as with all these sorts of things) but it was very stable for me once I had it set up

skai ,

Seconding Sway. I will admit I prefer autotiling (switching the split for new windows between horizontal/vertical automatically, rather than choosing which split you want), but overall Sway is so good in configuration that I still use it in spite of being a manual. The configuration takes time, but that’s common to pretty much any tiler.

greywolf0x1 ,

Thirding sway, although I use it with gnome. It’s a very good first choice for a tiling window

chanteoma ,

Thanks! You’ve all convinced me to try Sway. As soon as I have time to dive into the configuration, I’ll give it a shot!

gramgan OP ,

Fourthing sway, specifically swayfx and (as someone already mentioned) autotiling, both of which are available in the Nix repository without hassle.

Amazon is working on adding casting capabilities to the Matter framework, but at the moment it’s only implemented in the Echo Show and on Prime video.

net00 , to selfhosted in FOSS Alternative to Chromecast?

I think a few more details are needed to get you a clear alternative:

  • Which devices you want to cast from? what content you want to cast (DRM content like netflix, and/or your own media)? what kind of TV you have?

In my case after degoogling, I use mainly apple devices besides my windows pc. 2 of my TVs have AirPlay built in, so there’s no issue casting anything. If your TV is rather recent it’s likely to have it too.

The third TV is tricky, it’s an older 4k LG. I have a linux box connected to it and installed UxPlay in it. It only works with AirPlay “mirroring” so you kinda need an app that can treat the TV as a second monitor. Otherwise the mirroring won’t cover the entire TV screen. I’m still assuming apple devices here, but there’s OutPlayer and nPlayer in the appstore that can do this. It does support sound-only casting, so if it’s music you want it should be able to direct cast from your apps.

The second caveat for UxPlay is that it only works with DRM-free content (youtube, self hosted media). For DRM content I haven’t found a nice alternative for the old TV , so I use its built in apps (netflix, amazon prime). Kodi exists, but the plug-ins support for streaming sites isn’t good, often getting stuck to low-res content.

I’m guessing buying an apple tv/fire stick/roku is the only alternative for DRM content casting. I also explored the idea of “degoogling” my unused chromecast 3rd gen, but absolutely nothing exists for this and it just collects dust in a drawer.

eodur OP ,

I’ve got a handful of Android-based TVs that I’m becoming increasingly irritated with. Google regularly pushes updates that break stuff. I already have Jellyfin and Navidrome running on my network and can play them on the TV without issue. Netflix et al are also no issue, but being able to stream other sources such as YouTube/NewPipe.

I am not a fan of Apple either, so adding to them to the mix is a nonstarter.

I always log in to my TTY. Have you tried setting your colour scheme before login? I have a mega janky setup where I add an OpenRC sysinit service that calls setvtrgb. The first lines of the startup log aren’t affected but most of them are. That way I can log in with a colour scheme consistent with that which comes after the login.

Mostly all the indies I could play on PC that just straight up aren’t on consoles.

Some of them have been ported over but an example: I had almost 500 hours on Deep Rock Galactic when they first announced it for Playstation…

PlexSheep , (edited ) to linux in What is something you want to use, yet are NOT using?

Any modern DE in my fucking Raspberry Pi 5. I tried going Debian testing, broken packages. I tried installing other OSes, fedora didn’t even boot, Ubuntu broke in installation and now won’t let me log in.

Gnome in Debian stable feels too old and I can’t get the screen keyboard working and disable the dann screen reader. I just want a box to put on my tv.

Edit: was idiot, thought raspberry pi de was gnome.also the rpi5 needs a custom kernel as some stuff isn’t yet in the main one, so use raspbian.

PureTryOut ,
@PureTryOut@lemmy.kde.social avatar

Try Alpine Linux edge

PlexSheep , (edited )

I discovered that the default de wasn’t gnome actually. It was raspberry pi DE, which isn’t my thing.

Through I had no idea that the rpi5 required some stuff that is not yet merged into the kernel, and only raspbian works as a result, because they ship s custom one.

PureTryOut ,
@PureTryOut@lemmy.kde.social avatar

Alpine Linux has no default DE, I’m not sure what you’re talking about. It’s up to the user to install a DE.

PlexSheep ,

I meant on raspbian.

jbloggs777 , to linux in Would being a Linux "power user" increase my chances of getting a job in IT/tech?

Lots of good advice here. I’ll add that you could develop an understanding of IP networking and how it works on Linux, network interfaces, with containers, with iptables as well as stateful and stateless firewalls, CIDRs and basic routing, IP protocols and some common protocols like DNS and HTTP. This used to be pretty common knowledge in applicants 15 years ago, but very few have it today I find. DHCP and PXE boot is fun to learn too, and is still common in datacenters.

PlexSheep ,

What is the alternative to DHCP? Besides static IPS of course.

jbloggs777 ,

Not much, although it’s not strictly necessary for IPv6. But not much is pure IPv6 yet. Perhaps 2025 is the year of IPv6!

PlexSheep ,

Oh damn you’re right ipv6 has something included. Ipv6 is so cool, sad that hardly anyone supports it. Not even I myself on my home server because I couldn’t get routing from ipv6 to my internal ipv4 hosts working.

There’s Finamp, a music client for Jellyfin with offline playback. I’ve not used it personally yet, but with Spotify ratcheting up prices again I’m in the process of switching to self-hosting my music library. When that’s up and running it’s at the top of my list for Android clients.

Bluefruit ,

Jellyfin was my go to as well. It was really nice to play with and finamp was as well. Once setup it was just as easy and nice to use as Spotify without all the ads and Spotify randomly playing songs after i finish a podcast episode.
