Programming Languages today: Rust, Go, Typescript

Programming Languages back then: C, B, C#, C++

LOL

intelisense ,

C# is much more recent than C/BCPL etc. What’s interesting, though, is how many of C these more modern languages are inspired by C. C is also very much still in use!

LeFantome ,

The name C++ is an inside joke as ++ is the C language increment operator, meant to imply that C++ is an improvement on C.

I have heard several times that the name C# was meant to look like the ++ had been added again to the name C++. The syntax of C# was chosen to be familiar to programmers that knew C++.

If we are saying old languages use letters for names and that newer ones use words, it is worth noting that C# was also heavily inspired by Java, which came first. Both Java and JavaScript are from 1995 ( iolder than C# ).

In the grand scheme, Go is not much newer than C#. Go is from 2009 and C# is from 2000. That might seem like a lot but Go was intended as an alternative to C which is from 1972.

C got its name as a progression over B, which started the whole single letter thing, but C syntax was chosen to look like ALGOL ( 1958 ). So we have to blame ALGOL for the look of C, C++, Java, C#, JavaScript, and even Rust.

Two of the oldest languages as FORTRAN and Lisp. Language names were often abbreviations ( such as FORmula TRANslation for FORTRAN ). Lisp was originally LISP ( list processing ) but the name Lisp, from 1960, fits right in with Go and Rust I would say.

The trend is certainly towards more whimsical names though. An early name for C was NB which stood for “New B”. If it were named like we do today, maybe it would have been called “Newbie” or some synonym of that. I kind of like Punk.

You can do something cathartic. After getting dumped, I once pushed a tree down in my back garden and carried it around to the front of the house for disposal. My muscles ached and I was cut and bruised but felt a lot better afterwards. Other times I’ve just gone out drinking with friends. There are sater more controlled ways of doing it - try exercising to exhaustion, get away for the weekend and GI hiking, drive a tank, go to one of those places where you can smash things up, organise a big paintballing session, etc. Something that breaks you out of your routine, preferably gets you out of your local area, needs all your focus and tires you out. It should take your mind off things, get you so focused and tired you aren’t brooding about it and provide a symbolic break so you can leave your baggage behind on the other side.

It’s not an instant cure, this will all take time but it’s a decisive first step.

Time to add a cron job to auto reboot it once a day

Not the most dramatic, but when I was really little I remember play fighting with my brothers, and falling backwards off the bed and hitting my head against a dresser.

There was no wound or anything but I remember seeing all kinds of fucked up colors at the moment of impact. Despite being a huge crybaby, I’m pretty sure I didn’t cry or freak out, I was just extremely fatigued.

I wonder if we should have gone to the doctor. I don’t think you’re supposed to see TV static and rainbow vomit when you bump your head.

TootSweet , to science in Is there a scientific calendar which uses a different reference than Jesus?

I don’t know of any books I can recommend, but I’d definitely be down for 13 months with one being short. We could do 12 months of 30 days each plus a 13th month of 5 (or on leap years 6) days.

As far as anything that exists today, there is the Unix Timestamp which is defined as the number of seconds since (the entirely arbitrary time of) midnight January 1st 1970 UTC. Of course, “1970” only makes sense in the context of the Gregorian calendar which still has to do with the birth of Jesus. So, it’s not exactly what you’re looking for. But maybe it’s at least more removed from “the birth of Jesus” than the Gregorian calendar we all generally use.

I guess if you’re interested in this stuff, you might be interested in learning about ISO-8601, a standard way of representing dates/times in text. And also the concept of “leap seconds” and things like Leap Smearing.

There’s also a great short story about someone trying to explain to an alien with no familarity with earth how our calendar works, but I’m having trouble finding it now. I’ll edit this post with a link if I can find it.

ShrimpCurler ,

Why would you have 30 days in those months? I’m a fan of having exactly 4 weeks each month (28 days), across 13 months. Then every month is the same. If the 1st is on a Monday, then the 1st of every month will always be a Monday. You just need to add a leap week in every now and again.

HubertManne ,

just reduce the week to 6 days and every month is exactly 5 weeks

HubertManne ,

Id rather intersped the days as out of month days. 4 for the equinoxes and solsti but not sure where to put the fifth although I lean toward an extra one after the winter solsctice as the new year.

Barycentric Dynamical Time is one example of an astronomical time standard used in orbital dynamics models requiring consistency across billions of years and relativistic reference frames.

Let yourself feel whatever you feel and observe it. Think about how you would react if you saw a close friend or family member going through that. Most kind people would say something comforting or express some form of compassion.

The most important thing to remember is that there will be lots of good and bad things that happen in life, and holding on/ruminating over the past and obsessing over/fearing the future are probably best avoided.

A little reflection and self compassion is good and healthy, but long term rumination and self loathing is when things can get unhealthy quick. Discerning when one turns into the other is difficult, but do your best and try to be self aware of how you’re feeling as you navigate these truly difficult emotions.

Know that this experience, the emotions and the thoughts caught up in it, are part of what makes you human, and that ultimately, it’s one of many experiences that will add up to who you are and who you’ll eventually become. In every moment, you are, whether consciously or subconsciously, engaging with the world and the circumstances you find yourself in, and becoming who you want/need to be.

Be aware of that, and control what you are capable of controlling about who you want to become. It’s like navigating a river, you’re not completely in control nor out of control. Ultimately all you can do is try your best to get to where you want to go, knowing it won’t be perfect nor will it go exactly to plan, but nevertheless you carry on.

Vacuum Wars! He tests, reviews, and compares vacuum cleaners. And he’s very thorough and scientific. His standard, but not only test is to measure sand by mass, put it in a carpet, run the vacuum in question over it, and weigh the remainder. That gives him a benchmark for all of the. He also does electric mops, carpet cleaners, air filters, robotic vacuums etc. If you are ever in the market for a new vacuum cleaner, check it out!

For me the value of podman is how easily it works without root. Just install and run, no need for sudo or adding myself to docker group.

I use it for testing and dev work, not for running any services.

loam , to linux_gaming in Counter strike 2 issues

I’ve had issues on stock x11 PopOS using nvidia. Decent fps, but bigger drops and frametime consistency seemed horrible. I have to turn off my (mismatched) 2nd monitor for my proper refresh rate to work, but it still looked very microstuttery. I miss VRR, but I think there’s a bigger underlying issue than vsync/VRR not working. Haven’t tried Wayland yet.

A good hobby does wonders to keep you distracted enough to have the time to heal and move forward. If it’s something creative (Painting, writing, dancing, singing, playing an instrument, creating a map for Doom) is better. Work on yourself, Eat what you like, listen to what you like, dress as you like, keep yourself clean, and keep in mind that is not your fault, there’s nothing wrong with you and things just happens, that’s all.
