SD cards are not known for reliability either. A decent USB drive can get you SMART passthrough at least.

Cloudless , to nostupidquestions in How do you answer when a nurse asks you, "how are you doing today?"
@Cloudless@kbin.social avatar

Can't you just tell the nurse if you don't feel okay? How is that not being polite?

T156 ,

Depends on where you are. In some countries, saying that tends to be be just chatter/fluff, and the person asking does not expect an earnest answer.

But that said, if they’re seeing a doctor, it might be better to just be honest, instead of faffing about. At worst, they’re understandably slightly rude, and at best, they can make the nurse’s job easier.

Tar_alcaran , to showerthoughts in The U.S. Constitution is like a legacy piece of software written by hand and published in 1787.

It’d be great if that were true. Code only ever does one thing, but the US constitution doesn’t really DO anything. It’s just some vague concepts that were supposed to be revised later on, but now people just twist that vagueness into supporting their own goals.

Just rewrite the damn this instead of treating it like a holy book meant to be interpreted by the clergy.

aCosmicWave OP ,

Code contains rules and instructions for computers to follow. The constitution contains rules and instructions for humans to follow. Each human uses a different code interpreter though 😊

2008/2009, learnt how to make webpages in school using Dreamweaver, so went home and found out eventually after months of trying, to host my own webpage using XAMPP. That kinda died and turned into a blogspot page instead.

Fast forward to today, piracy, privacy and posterity. Aka, Plex, Adguard and a bunch of tools for storing family photos, documents, ebooks.

chagall , to nostupidquestions in What kind of data do Lemmy instances store about their users?

Disclaimer, This is only for Lemmy.world.

I actually read the privacy policy. There are basically 3 segments of data:

  1. The one time when you signed up.
  2. All times you log in, after you’ve signed up.
  3. User generated data

For part one: They store your username and the IP address used when you create the account. They store a hashed version of your password, not the actual password. They’ll store that info for as long as you have an account with lemmy.world (although they reserve the right to keep it for up to 12 months after you’ve deleted your account). They store the hashed password so you can log into your account.

For part two: They keep a log of the times you sign in, the device you signed in from (iOS, Android, web) and the IP address you do it from. They delete this data on a rolling basis, every 90 days from the date the login data was created (from the time you logged in).

For part three: These are your posts, comments, upvotes, downvotes, etc. This is stored this until you delete your comment/post or undo your upvote/downvote. When you delete your account, if you haven’t deleted your data, the connection (the association) between your account and the data itself is severed. This means that the comment will remain but the username value will be null.

tl;dr: I’m no expert but I think they keep a very small amount data. They probably do this to keep their costs as low as possible (but that is just my speculation).

If you’re really worried about data mining and data logging, you can always go back to reddit /s

IphtashuFitz , to maliciouscompliance in [REPOST] Military Wife Demands Salute? Never!

Back in the 1990’s I was a member of the USCG Auxiliary, which, while made up entirely of civilian volunteers, we worked/trained with active duty USCG and wore very similar uniforms & insignia. The primary differences in our uniforms was we use silver wherever the USCG uses gold, and our insignia, epaulets, etc. have a big “A” in them. So if you know what to look for it’s fairly obvious, but to the casual observer there’s not much difference.

As civilian volunteers we don’t salute one another and don’t expect salutes from active duty USCG, but if someone did salute we would return it out of respect.

I was appointed a position on the USCGAUX National staff for a couple years and had a position that roughly equated to a commander (3 stripes). I occasionally traveled to various USCG training centers as a result, along with other Auxiliarists, and we’d wear our uniforms while on those trips.

We used to chuckle at the various reactions we’d see as we walked around these facilities. Virtually every senior USCG officer could spot us a mile away and offered nothing more than a polite nod or greeting as we passed. Younger members that had been in the USCG for a while would obviously start paying close attention as they got close, looking for a clear sign, then obviously relax when they realized they didn’t have to salute. Cadets and newer USCG personnel would only see the three stripes and immediately salute.

I know how to do it on mobile ,not sure if it’s the same on desktop.

Long press on the image and choose “Open in new tab”

One done copy the new tabs URL, it should end in .jpg and copy to the post URL in Lemmy.

Pulptastic , to books in How do you decide when to give up on a book?

There are millions of books, no need to waste your time on a bad one. I go by my gut; if someone I know recommended it I’ll stick it out longer. If it has lots of praise or I like the author I may read several chapters hoping it gets better.

I have no qualms quitting in chapter 1. I started Life of Pi and quit like 10 pages in because the main character is insufferable. I quit Dear Miss Metropolitan because I didn’t like the style of narration; the story sounds great but I don’t enjoy reading it so I move on.

Conversely, I’ve stuck it out with books that weren’t what I expected but still were interesting. Song of Achilles was one of those; it turned out to be a gay bodice ripper but by the time I found that out I was already interested in the storyline and wanted to see it through.

Microplastics and plastic related byproducts, like phtalates (which are connected with a decreased fertility in mammals)
I’m positive that the long term effects of these substances, that can be found in every link of the food chain nowadays, will be discussed a lot in the future

zatsando OP , to selfhosted in Are NUC hardware good for self hosting?

i3 are good enough for the things I wrote or should I got for i5/i7?

Skyline ,

In general, I’d say it’s good enough. i5 might have more cores if you need them, but then i7 only gets you slightly higher frequency, which may not be worth the price.

waitmarks ,

depends on how many services you plan on running, i think the i3 would be sufficient for what you listed, the i5 would give you room to grow.

the i7’s usually aren’t worth it for servers since they are just a clock speed increase.

qazwsxedcrfv000 ,
@qazwsxedcrfv000@lemmy.unknownsys.com avatar

Check for the exact core configuration and cache size via Intel Ark first. More often than not i5 and i7 can have the same core configuration and cache size but difference base and boost frequencies.

Celeron would handle that (see my other reply)

Jojo-Mcfrost572 , to nostupidquestions in Why do people self-harm?

Coping mechanics. It's a hard and fast distraction technique. It's grounding at its most base level. Feeling the skin rip stops some of the brains abilities to think.

Great weapon for keeping people alive.

Why not just Google the question

Chozo ,

Why not just Google the question

To be fair, Googling anything relating to suicide or self-harm can be pretty tough unless you add the right terms to your search. If your search seems desperate, Google will flood you with self-help resources and suicide hotlines. But if your search is a bit more clinical, it can give you some very informative results.
