I’ve got a Nextcloud instance that I’ve run for a few years. Love it. At home I have an Odroid H3+ with 64GB of ram running Openmediavault. Got about a dozen containers running on that. I need to play with it more and use that ram. I did try to get Boinc running on it but it, sadly, kept shutting down. I’ll have to find a another way to contribute to science.

derek , to nostupidquestions in What happens if the lemmy instance where I signed up goes offline?

No, you can’t. Your instance will go down, but all your posts and comments will still live in read-only mode on the instances they been federated before.

In mastodon (another activity pub service) you can export your account with subscriptions, but not the posts. So, if it’ll happen, you gotta start from scratch.

Favorite game ever is Final Fantasy 6 (FF3 in the states). It’s got that steampunk vibe, the BEST character development, worst villain, and the music SLAPS. Don’t even look at original cartridge prices though, it’ll make you sick.

ThorrJo , to selfhosted in [Help] How can I self host services (eg, a website, lemmy instance, vpn) on my own hardware while hiding my IP?

As others have pointed out,

  1. a VPN (so that your outbound traffic comes from your VPN endpoint, not your bare IP address)
  2. a reverse proxy server

I use a router from GL-iNet to run the always-on VPN, and rathole for a reverse proxy. Both the VPN and the reverse proxy terminate at $4/mo VPSes.

StillPaisleyCat OP , to startrek in Strange New Worlds Season 2 early review round up
@StillPaisleyCat@startrek.website avatar

Fair enough.

I too felt Picard season three was heavily overhyped, especially by many of the Star Trek specialty sites.

In general though, I welcome nonspoilery general early reviews, especially from less specialized professional reviewers.

In this case, I am noticing that the more mainstream reviews are the most positive and the specialized genre or franchise reviews are working for a more measured tone than with Picard.

Is it because the genre reviewers have felt the disappointment with of some of fandom with Picard, or is it because they are at heart TNG era fans? Makes one wonder.

In my own case, I can forgive much of the overly positive reviews of Picard because I really found the early episodes the strongest, with the writers doubling down on everything that most concerned me in the back half of the season. It was episode 6 where the wheels of plot and character began to come off and nostalgia was given the work of heavy lifting TNG fans through to the end.

With SNW being episodic, six episodes would seem to be enough to know if the shows continuing strongly or hitting a sophomore slump. No one yet has called slump. So it seems that those who liked season one should expect to be satisfied with season two.

The one that has an @ in it is one a different instance than the one your account is on.

sphere_au , to selfhosted in Do you use all your self hosted services? Are there any you found to be not worth it after installing?

I tried putting up SearX and NextCloud, without really having used any equivalent cloud services in the past… but eventually both came unstuck, because:

  • SearX ended up getting blocked by basically every search engine, even though it was a private instance and only I was using it. And even while it worked, the results were not much better than using some other engine like Brave Search or even Startpage. Also, being the only user on that IP, meant that I was still able to be tracked by Google and filter bubbles started being an issue.
  • NextCloud - just wasn’t a need for it. I initially used the RSS reader and email and a few other things, but I already have a good desktop email client and RSS reader and preferred to use them, and other services I just wasn’t that interested in. No point putting in the effort maintaining it if I’m not using it.

These were personal instances though. Maybe might have been more successful if I’d had a userbase to serve, who actually were interested in having things web-based and were not so concerned about the inevitable loss in performance compared to desktop apps.

There’s this french MMO i played as a kid called Dofus and that soundtrack still hits hard when I listen. I think part of it is nostalgia but also its just so beautiful
