h0bbl3s , to linux in linux as business/ company pc?
@h0bbl3s@lemmy.world avatar

I’d suggest one of the fedora atomic installs, maybe even get a couple renewed Thinkpads all set up, one with kde and one with gnome and let them play with them for a few days. I was the only engineer in my company that ran Linux and the bosses only concession was that I carry a windows PC too when he was onsite with me so he’d understand what I was doing, but he provided a nice one for me so I never complained.

  • SciShow tangents (a lightly competitive science show)
  • Ologies (interviewing experts from different fields/ologies)
  • Fake Doctors, Real Friends (Scrubs actors rewatching scrubs, my favorite show when i was younger. Plus great behind the scenes of film making)
  • The Imp & Skizz show (just two gamers i love to watch, talking about creative stuff. Probably not as enjoyable for anyone who doesn’t watch them already though. Still love them and would love to see then succeed more!)

Fun fact he actually started out by making minecraft videos in middle school. “Mr Beast” is literally a name thought up by a 12 year old trying to look cool on the internet.

hedgehog , to selfhosted in How do I download YouTube videos in 1080p instead of 4k with yt-dlp?

I use –format-sort +res:1080, which, if my understanding of the documentation is correct, will make it prefer 1080p, the smallest video larger than 1080p if 1080p isn’t available, or the largest video if nothing 1080p or larger is available.

res is the smallest dimension of the video (so for a 1080x1920 portrait video, it would be 1080).

Default sort is descending order. The + makes it sort in ascending order instead.

OsrsNeedsF2P , to showerthoughts in We really accepted toilet paper as the definitive way to wipe our asses isn't?

Until recently, baby wipes were largely non biodegradable

CM400 ,

And they’re still non-flushable, despite what the package says.

Most baby wipes and similar materials aren’t designed to be flushed—“flushable” products like wipes do not readily disperse upon flushing and actually remain in a solid state while traveling through the sewer system. They may clog your pipes at home resulting in costly visits from your plumber. They may get caught in the public wastewater system, which can cause thousands of dollars worth of damage to regional pumping equipment leading to higher sewer bills for us all. While many of these products might masquerade as “flushable” and “sewer friendly”, don’t be fooled!

protectyourpipes.org/wipes#

bizarroland ,

Toilet wipes have led to an epidemic of what have been colloquially termed as turdbergs, which are vehicle sized piles of shit held together by baby wipes that refuse to actually biodegrade and have caused sewer and plumbing issues costing taxpayers and individuals millions of dollars.

Todoist. It’s nothing to do with “productivity” per se, but that is a benefit I’ve reaped.

Instead of having to remember what feels like 100 things all the time and doing 2 of them, I just remember the app. And it’s a hell of a lot less stressful. The sub-task function also helps simplify larger things and makes them simpler to tackle. It’s a game changer as an AuDHD individual.

ERPAdvocate , to asklemmy in What would happen if you spray a bucket with hydrophobic spray and put water in it?

Eh nothing interesting. The water would be in the bucket but pool and bead much quicker, instead of spreading and getting the bucket ‘wet’. Kind of like a hydrophobic windshield coating.

machinin , to selfhosted in Looking for HW recommendations for DIY NAS/Homelab

I’ve been looking at this for a bit: a.co/d/2FMhmIY

I haven’t checked any reviews, but it might be something to look into.

sugar_in_your_tea OP ,

Wow, that’s like… exactly what I was looking for. It’s also from a brand I don’t recognize and reviews say there’s no manual (I ignore those anyway), but if it works it works. And 4 2.5G ethernet? What an odd board!!

Thanks! I’ll definitely be looking to see if I can find out anything more about this board!

machinin ,

The are similar (the same?) boards all over Amazon and AliExpress. I would be interested in knowing what you find out. Good luck!

sugar_in_your_tea OP ,

Well, here’s what I found:

The mfg website had other networking and NAS-type stuff, so I guess they’re an OEM in China.

The OMV page says it idles at ~23W, which seems odd since that CPU has a 6W TDP and other boards with the same CPU seem to idle around 6W. It seems something to do with how they’re using PCIe to provide the I/O is taking up a lot of power?

machinin ,

Thanks, those are good links. I don’t know anything about power supplies/demands, sorry I can’t be a better conversation partner.

There might be similar boards on AliExpress, but I haven’t seen ones with as many SATA ports.

machinin ,

I ran upon this video today. It might be helpful.

@GalaxyBrain@hexbear.net avatar

Hats off to those who do it. I don’t need to see things when they’re new, so I will generally just wait until there’s a home release or streaming rip. I’m not a 4k guy or whatever, I’m down with DVD quality or worse, I still wanna see it in a better format than a cam. But there’s clearly people who want it, so I’m glad people are out there doing the work.

The Joann Fabric and Crafts near me stopped offering a restroom to customers during Covid and never went back (understandable). Luckily there is a Target next door.

I’m just gonna drop this here as an example:

The Jerusalem Report (Owned by Jerusalem Post) and the Jerusalem Post

This biased as shit publication is declared by MBFC as VEEEERY slightly center-right. They make almost no mention of the fact that they cherry pick aspects of the Israel war to highlight, provide only the most favorable context imaginable, yadda yadda. By no stretch of the imagination would these publications be considered unbiased as sources, yet according to MBFC they’re near perfect.

Really shows the mods don’t value feedback, which begs the question why even bother making a thread to get feedback if you’ve already made up your mind.

breakfastmtn ,

yet according to MBFC they’re near perfect

Here are some quotes from the link you posted:

They often publish factual information that utilizes loaded words (wording that attempts to influence an audience by appealing to emotion or stereotypes) to favor conservative causes. These sources are generally trustworthy for information but may require further investigation.

After Conrad Black acquired the paper, its political position changed to right-leaning, when Black began hiring conservative journalists and editors. Eli Azur is the current owner of Jerusalem Post. According to Ynetnews, and a Haaretz article, “Benjamin Netanyahu, the Editor in Chief,” in 2017, Azur gave testimony regarding Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s pressure. Current Editor Yaakov Katz was the former senior policy advisor to Naftali Bennett, the former Prime Minister and head of the far-right political party, “New Right.”

During the 2023 Israel-Hamas conflict, the majority of stories favored the Israeli government, such as this Netanyahu to Hezbollah: If you attack, we’ll turn Beirut into Gaza. In general, the Jerusalem Post holds right-leaning editorial biases and is usually factual in reporting.

Overall, we rate The Jerusalem Post Right-Center biased based on editorial positions that favor the right-leaning government. We also rate them Mostly Factual for reporting, rather than High due to two failed fact checks.

Based on MBFC’s methodology, they can’t have more than 6 points (out of 10) toward credibility, which is the floor for high credibility. They’re one lost point from being listed as a medium credibility source, not “near perfect.” They’ve also failed two fact checks in news reporting (not op-ed), which is seriously non-perfect. No one reading that page could walk away thinking that jpost isn’t biased toward both the current Israeli government and conservative causes. MBFC calling them “right-center” is also consistent with how they’re rated just about everywhere else. AllSides rates them as “center” (with a note that community feedback in disagreement believes they “lean right”) and even Wikipedia describes them as “center-right/conservative”.

What exactly are you angry about here?

awesome_lowlander ,

MBFC Credibility Rating: HIGH CREDIBILITY

breakfastmtn ,
@breakfastmtn@lemmy.ca avatar

Because? You’re angry that they have a methodology? You’re angry that they’re basing it on the paper as a whole and not solely on their coverage of Gaza?

Because they’re in agreement with you. When someone posts a Jerusalem Post story about Gaza, MBFC is saying “this source is heavily biased toward the Israeli government.” Even if their coverage is factual, you’re not getting the full context of what’s happening in the conflict.
