I need to change all my comments to how shitty spez is. Is there a quick way to do that?

Nougat ,

Not since they shut down API access. Now it's obvious why they did that.

Go after netflix too.

AA5B ,

I just learned about the iPhone App, and this article made me want to check it out. I love it and will start using it

Whoever decided to market by Streisand Effect was genius /s

kalleboo ,

It used to be you’d search for something, click on the results and load the ads on the page with the info.

Then google started adding their snippets with direct answers, and yes, there has been an uproar from content sites about that. But some fraction of people still click through for more context.

With LLMs, all that traffic is 100% gone.

UndercoverUlrikHD ,

Eh, I might ask the LLM about something, but I always open it sources to verify it summaries. You still can’t trust them fully.

CrayonRosary ,

That’s just kicking the can down the road. They’ll be exactly as trustworthy as your own brain at summarizing articles soon. What then?

UndercoverUlrikHD ,

I still want to know the source of what I’m being told. There are plenty of brains out there smarter than mine, I’ll still ask for sources.

fruitycoder ,

There is a reason why RAG and fine-tuning are big topics in the field. General foundation models are good for general low risk info, but if people really care its generally not enough.

themurphy ,

Unfortunately, most people don’t care. That’s why most get their news from Facebook or TikTok, and only read headlines.

fruitycoder ,

I mean I don’t care for most things, we don’t all need to experts on the topic of the week imho

kayazere , to technology in Who makes money when AI reads the internet for us?

While I prefer to doing the reading/searching/summarizing myself, rather than have it presented to me, the current website revenue model is so broken with ads, tracking, and other pop ups. The user experience is really horrible.

joyjoy , to technology in Disney+ has started cracking down on password sharing in the US

I’m sure just like Netflix, it will only effect Smart TVs. Netflix never stopped you from watching on your phone or browser.

tory , to samsung in Samsung debuts the world's first transparent MicroLED screen at CES 2024

Looks like it’s always a little bit transparent even when it should be a solid color. And that means it’s not going to stand toe to toe with a regular TV for regular TV stuff. So… It’s hard to imagine a super solid application for this other than maybe decorative pieces in airports or hotel lobbies or something.

PastyWaterSnake ,

I could see it being useful for dynamic, informative signs like you said in airports. Having transparency could be actually useful, maybe not just a total gimmick, in some areas I’m sure.

Or maybe it’s just another useless, overpriced concept piece that we won’t see for another 20 years

lledrtx ,

It’ll be used for ads. Really intrusive ads… They could put it anywhere (stadiums, sight seeing places etc) since it is transparent but like once every minute, display an ad.

RememberTheApollo_ , to technology in Inside the 'arms race' between YouTube and ad blockers / Against all odds, open source hackers keep outfoxing one of the wealthiest companies.

Could Google and ad services sue Firefox and extension writers?

I mean, nothing pisses off corporations more than someone coming between them and revenue, and the courts tend to agree.

CriticalMiss ,

No, it is your right to choose what code is executed in your browser and which isn’t. There’s a case to be made about accepting the EULA but if you never registered a Google account, then you never accepted any EULA. This is not the case with modded android/iOS apps as in those cases you are violating DMCA 1201.

ExLisper , to technology in Inside the 'arms race' between YouTube and ad blockers

I still only saw this popup once, some time ago. Go uBlock!

    • loosely “technology” related
    • Facebook are immoral
    • I live in the EU and don’t want it
    • absolutely proprietary
    • I don’t live in the EU and tried it, and it sucks

I think what really sets people off is the “finally” in the title – which comes from Engadget, of course, so OP isn’t even at fault here.

Nobody particularly cares for or about Threads but yeah, this is legitimately tech news and we shouldn’t shoot the messenger.

RGB3x3 , (edited ) to technology in Google and major mobile carriers want Europe to regulate Apple's iMessage platform

All I want is to be able to message people using discord through Signal. Or from Messages to Whatsapp. And just be able to send and receive decent quality videos between iMessage and non-imessage users.

It’s so annoying having to juggle so many different messaging apps just to talk to people.

Why can’t it be like email?

    BearOfaTime ,

Because each platform is for a different use-case. Discord sucks. It’s one of the worst UI/UX I’ve ever seen, and I’ve been using computers since the late 70’s…punched cards are only slightly worse.

    13617 ,

I could understand that until I experienced discords new mobile UI and the countless competitors. Definitely discord is better than all the others
