@spyd3r@sh.itjust.works avatar

Just give me back the results from the 00’s era of google. They need to go backwards not ““forwards””.

eronth , to technology in Google will start showing AI-powered search results to users who didn't opt in

Lol. The generated result that is incomplete and slower than the rest of the search. I usually scroll past it because it’s not done generating. If it does generate fast enough, it’s usually too vague or broad

BetaDoggo_ , (edited ) to technology in The FTC is probing Reddit’s AI licensing deals

I feel like the whole Reddit AI deal is a trap. If any real judgment comes down about data use Reddit is an easy scapegoat. There was basically nothing stopping them from scraping the site for free.

BothsidesistFraud , to news in X walks back its misgendering policy after right-wing complaints

Misgendering is a very mild form of disrespect compared to what all is out there, regularly, on X and every other social media site. It is a good thing that these sites do not generally regulate disrespect, although for community controlled forums (such as subreddits) I think it’s good that moderators can choose their own rules.

gedaliyah ,
@gedaliyah@lemmy.world avatar

Misgendering is a cornerstone of the antisocial system of harrassment that contributes to trans deaths. Calling it a mild form of harassment is deeply misguided.

By the way, this is one of those places where engaging in transphobia (or any other form of bigotry) will get someone banned.

Maybe it was a cybertruck and the super stealth design made it’s signature very small.

Joker , to technology in Who makes money when AI reads the internet for us?

The electric company. AI’s reading articles written by other AI’s. Everyone trying to figure out how to squeeze more revenue out of it. But everyone’s paying the electric bill for all these servers and the electric company doesn’t have to give a shit about any of it.

qaz , to technology in Midjourney might ban Biden and Trump images this election season

That seems like a reasonable decision

astreus , to technology in Who makes money when AI reads the internet for us?

Considering how much of the web is AI-generated now (with it predicted to rise to 90% by the end of 2026) we’ve managed to turn a tool for connecting people to a tool for chatbots to talk to one another.

VampyreOfNazareth ,

Just a big waste of power that will be unsustainable when it doesn’t result in product sales.

AA5B ,

But it could drive even more sales. Just think of all those articles “nine must-have kitchen tools on sale at Amazon RIGHT NOW”, followed by a list of specific product referrals (embedded in a story across many pages, slideshow style). Currently you can choose to block or at least not follow, but imagine if every search was a similar generated story, and the tools authors got caught up in the referral game

Infringing on a patent and literally stealing hardware, and taking it to a Chinese competitor, are on completely different levels.

Arc Browser is better for USERS. Ad companies are just going to have to figure it out. Sounds like a “them” problem to me

Remember Google attempt at DRM for the Internet? That would in effect block this. This and similar are justifying to companies to support Google Chrome only and use their DRM.

FaceDeer ,
@FaceDeer@kbin.social avatar

I do not remember Google's attempt at DRM for the Internet, which is an indication of how well it went for their attempt.

Krauerking ,

They aren’t done trying yet.

FaceDeer ,
@FaceDeer@kbin.social avatar

I just did a search, and according to the articles I've found Google abandoned the "Web Environment Integrity" API in November and removed their prototype from Chromium.

Krauerking ,

Well except that they are continuing with developing it for their Webview browser which is the web browser based of chrome that’s embedded in basically every app anyways.

Plus Apple has their Web Tokens which are not being fought against which means Google will be desperate to get in on the pie that Apple is getting away with even if it means waiting and coming up with a different name for it.

It’s still coming. Web DRM and person specific tracking is just around the bend once we get exhausted and distracted enough.

FaceDeer ,
@FaceDeer@kbin.social avatar

Then I guess I won't see whatever websites decide to use it (until it's cracked). Oh well.

prex ,

Does that mean you (and me) end up drowning in a pool of 90% AI dead internet comments while everyone who stayed on Reddit or Facebook can talk to their friends in their WEI tracked & profiled walled garden?

Shitty choice.

The only solution I can see it robust moderation tools on a platform like Lemmy.

AI still gets to read everything but at least individuals/communities/instances can be blocked for bad behaviour.

What altertatives do we have right now?

TheRealCharlesEames ,

No offense but I’m not sure you read or understood the main point of the article — there’s not much of an internet for users if there’s no incentive to supply it with content.

CurlyMoustache ,
@CurlyMoustache@lemmy.world avatar

Meh. We did it before the internet turned to shit. It will be OK

AA5B ,

Advertisers are welcome to turn back the clock of enshittification to a time when the internet worked for both publishers and readers. They got greedy and abused the attention of readers, so I have no sympathy. Now this article adds a huge pile of entitlement that we owe them? On top of this excrement

Fridgeratr , to samsung in Samsung debuts the world's first transparent MicroLED screen at CES 2024

Cool but I definitely don’t see the purpose of a transparent screen. I use a screen to see what’s on it, not what’s behind it. I guess it could maybe make some cool signs or billboards

wahming ,

Once you can make it transparent, you can then layer it for actual 3D

Brickhead92 ,

My first thought was just for marketing purposes, but I like your idea more

Fridgeratr ,

Oh damn I didn’t think of that, that could be pretty cool. Thin enough and you could make a hologram!

Grass ,

Transparent screens are already in use for gimmickly slot machines in casinos

Chobbes ,

It drives me insane when science fiction movies and shows use transparent screens and phones, because like… that’s just a worse product for no reason? Why would you want a transparent phone?

My other pet peeve is holograms that are worse than just like… looking at a screen, or using a projector for a large room of people. Holograms could be cool for certain visualizations, but like… Maybe record a normal video instead of a blurry and pixelated hologram?

AtmaJnana ,

Advertising. It’s for ads.
