i_am_not_a_robot , to technology in Reddit is licensing its content to Google to help train its AI models

Google shouldn’t have to pay. Whatever I may have posted on Reddit was public information. Nobody should need to pay Reddit to read it.

pingveno ,

The argument isn’t just around content, it’s around hosting. If Google is sitting there scarfing down Reddit’s data, that costs Reddit in server time. That can get extremely expensive. So yeah, if Google is going to train an AI that Google will profit off of, it should pay Reddit for server time.

catloaf ,

More than server time, for big Internet connections, uploads are priced by the byte. When someone requests a lot of data, reddit has to pay their provider to send it.

– Nvidia, probably

anlumo ,

On my 4090, the performance is much better than ChatGPT4. The output is way worse though.

heavy , to gaming in Here’s a video of Doom running on gut bacteria, proving you really can play the game on anything

If I arranged a bunch of rocks to show the DOOM logo, would someone say I was running DOOM on stones?

Nonsense click bait, non-news article. If there’s an actual achievement here, it’s overshadowed by the misinformation.

Dirk_Darkly ,

Did you just equate turning living organisms into a monitor with arranging rocks?

heavy ,

Living organisms into a monitor… In the same way that a bunch of people in a stadium can hold up squares that make up an image? I mean at the end of the day almost anything can be made into a “monitor”. That doesn’t mean it’s “running DOOM”.

HandBash ,

Yeah it’s more like displaying a picture of the doom intro screen rather than actually computing it. Still cool but vastly different than computing the drawing functionality of the game.

nephs ,

gullible , to games in Unity cuts 265 jobs as part of a company 'reset'

What exactly did unity have so many employees for? I’ve only just realized that I don’t know what their company does, besides develop a game engine.

Immersive_Matthew ,

Given how stagnant the engine has been over the years, I wonder the same thing. So many people over there yet so little value being added to their game engine.

BURN ,

They offer enterprise level support for their engine and also have a lot of mobile focused development. They have their own in house ad provider and dedicated a bunch of man power to monetizing mobile as much as possible

I think they bought some comany that could help them get into the CG movie sence like what unreal is doing with disney and the likes. The new CEO is try to focusing on the gaming aspect of untiy so they are selling off some parts of the acquisition. I think they mostly kept the IP but are liquidating everything else.

tacosanonymous , to retrogaming in The Analogue Pocket will soon come in eight Game Boy Pocket/Advance colors

These are stupidly expensive. I’ve seen kits that are 1/3 this price. Or, if you love spending money, machines that do more for the same price.

deft ,

A kit? what do you mean? I would love one of these

tacosanonymous ,
BartsBigBugBag ,

Just because they’re both FPGA based products does not mean they’re equivalent. The Pocket can use its FPGAs to replicate dozens of different consoles and arcade units. It also has sleep mode and save states when using original cartridges.

Without adapters or OpenFPGA, the pocket can play GB, GBC, GBA original carts. With adapters, you can add in Neo Geo and Game Gear carts, and with open FPGA, you can add in NES, SNES, Genesis, Master System, dozens of arcade units, and dozens more I’m just forgetting. I personally have DigDug, Q Bert, and all the ones I mention above on mine.

The hardware alone on the Pocket is a massive upgrade over Funnyplaying, but when you include the OpenFPGA support, they’re not even in the same league. Not to trash the funny playing one, I think it’s great. It’s just not the same product category even imo.

deft ,

what about what he shared? can it not do that?

BartsBigBugBag ,

Edit: sorry I misread.

No, what he shared cannot do most of that. It can play game boy cartridges though.

ReallyActuallyFrankenstein , (edited )

An $80 kit that has an FPGA and swappable cores, super-high resolution screen, to build a machine in a similarly portable form factor? Where exactly have you seen that?

PrettyLights ,

You’re commenting on an FPGA handheld with OLED, not an AliExpress android clone. Where are you seeing kits for less?

4 choices: don’t sell in CA, fight the law, make a separate phone to meet R2R laws that are likely going to become more prevalent, release a press report portraying magnanimity towards R2R and make the bare minimum effort to meet the law.

The last is the only real answer.

TheHobbyist , to technology in Apple will honor California's 'right to repair' rules nationwide

What does this mean regarding their components pairing? Will they still force indepent repair shops to go through apple to validate a repair by requesting a new pairing for the replaced part? Will it be free? Will it depend on whether the part is a genuine apple part? A salvaged one? A third party part?

netchami , to technology in Meta is promoting Threads posts on Facebook and there’s no way to opt out

Is that because no one is using Threads?

yamanii ,
@yamanii@lemmy.world avatar

Threads was already dead when porn was banned, that’s why it’s so hard for people to move from twitter.

netchami ,

I don’t understand why people use Twitter or Reddit for porn. There are dedicated sites for that stuff.

mercury ,

Twitter used to be a good place for artists in general, not too sure about now. Never really understood reddit tho.

rchive ,

I think people use things like Reddit for anything because Reddit has a built in system of human curation. It’s not just SEO engineered garbage fake websites like basically every search engine will yield now, or sites’ internal searches pushing you to their top players instead of what you’re actually searching for.
