Pornoagent , to til in TIL about the concept of Weaponized Incompetence, which probably explains every issue you ever faced in a bureaucracy

I think it’s more commonly found in domestic relationships as well. It’s probably most often used to just avoid housework, such as laundry or dishes and other things that men see as “beneath them” (hint: it’s not). Or in the case of people supporting the entire household, it’s not seen as a fair division of labor to also do housework. If one is doing all the work outside the home or paying the overwhelming majority of the household bills, why should one be doing housework too? What responsibilities does the other partner have? So one just F’s up basic jobs and soon the other partner takes over out of frustration.

It can also be seen as the male equivalent of withholding sex when partners are in conflict. For women, withholding sex is commonly used as a form of punishment in relationships to show displeasure at a man’s behavior. It’s denying their bodies to men, which they have every right to do, it’s their bodies their choice, sex should be consensual. For men however, that specific tactic is almost meaningless in many cases (there’s always exceptions to be sure), as women, on average, tend to have a higher tolerance for forgoing sex than men do.

Enter weaponized incompetence. Men are typically relied on to do most of the “grunt” work and many repair jobs around the household, their bodies are used to affect change on their environment. So if they simply withhold their own bodies to be used to repair or move heavy objects or whatever, that’s also their prerogative and it can bring a household to a halt. Nobody can force you to fix an electrical outlet or change a flat tire or repair a washer/dryer or whatever else men are relied on for. Men can simply deny the use of their bodies for basic things that everyone else takes for granted, it’s their bodies their choice, labor should be consensual.

American opposition to the convention stems primarily from political and religious conservatives. No surprise there

It’s fucking bullshit and I can only assume someone was payed off to make it happen. $500 a year of insurance $ I can’t use without endangering myself.

jarfil , to technology in Wikipedia Admin Unmasks As Alt Account Of Admin Who Was Extremely Banned In 2015 To The Great Bewilderment Of Everyone

Based on that, it would seem like these could be some possibilities:

  • Maybe they enjoy “the game” or deception more than doing anything real with it. They may already have another alt admin in the making, or even made one already.
  • It’s a lot of time to keep up the same charade, so maybe they’re doing it as a job, with who knows how many more accounts already.
  • Or maybe they finally got bored with it, and decided to go out with a “POP!” while showing everyone their “superiority”.

For better and for worse, the Wikipedia attracts people good with words, which includes those capable of writing clearly, and those who can organize the whole project, and also those who enjoy playing games of sophistry to whatever end.

I used to have a dog that would yawn with a little whine whenever she was frustrated. It was adorable.

That's pretty common among cats and dogs. Sometimes the clever ones will hide a bite they decided against at the last second with a yawn, too.

fubo , (edited ) to til in TIL Kowloon Walled City existed and is the real world origin for many visual representations of oppressive urbanization in cyberpunk media

Curiously, in cyberpunk media this sort of mega-slum is often portrayed as an excess of capitalist urbanization, whereas in historical reality it was an exclave of “communist” China inserted into “capitalist” British Hong Kong, wherein the “capitalist” authorities had no jurisdiction.

(Edited: Sounds more like the point was that it was effectively nobody’s jurisdiction.)

zephr_c ,

The Chinese government never actually had any authority there. It was completely within Hong Kong, and the British didn’t let them go there.

TheBucklessProphet ,

What the fuck are you talking about? In actual reality it was a product of capitalism. Specifically British imperialist capitalism in China. It took until the mid 80’s (40 years after the Communists came to power) for the British to allow China to have control over the area and it was turned in to a park less than a decade later, clearly indicating that the Communists were in no way interested in continuing the existence of the dystopian walled city.

fubo ,

Sorry, are you saying the British Hong Kong authorities had any jurisdiction there?

Aatube ,
@Aatube@kbin.social avatar

With no government enforcement from the Chinese or the British aside from a few raids by the Hong Kong Police, the walled city became a haven for crime and drugs. It was only during a 1959 trial for a murder that occurred within the walled city that the Hong Kong government was ruled to have jurisdiction there.

The KMT repeatedly sent requests to reclaim the entire region but Imperial Britain pretty much refused (they proposed a ton of alternative solutions) and didn't govern it either. So yes, it's Imperial Britain's fault. Since the day Britain agreed to transfer the territory to the CCP there was a declared intent to demolish the place.

TheBucklessProphet ,

It’s more accurate to say that the British prevented either themselves (through inaction) or China (by treaty/law) from having any practical control. If you’d bother to read the wiki article OP linked you’d know. China should have had jurisdication, but Britain techincally had (imperialist) jurisdication. The result was a no-man’s land until Britain finally gave up.

EDIT: missed a word
