I don’t even know how to react to this news: On one hand Wagner Prigozhin is a person who is ideologically much worse than Putin (basically full-blown fascist as opposed to imperialist), but on the other hand he could have helped with increasing unrest in Russia which could technically mean chaos on Russian side of the front and opportunity for Ukraine to make some gains, but of course that’s long time due, due to giving up on march on Moscow.
it was shared online that wagner Prigozhin had a die hard following of people within his private army, and that they may retaliate in some way.
What I’m concerned about, is that further destabilization of putin and his power, only increases the likelihood of him resorting to nuclear weapons. To people in power, their greatest fear is losing said power. I just hope whoever is in charge of turning the keys and pushing “The button,” is strong enough to disobey orders.
Do I have to point out that this title is misleading? Don’t get me wrong, I’d be glad if it were true… one less child killer roaming the world but if you read the article it hasn’t been confirmed by western sources he was on that plane.
It’s not a racism thing. It’s an “I don’t trust the fucking kremlin” thing. Russian state media does not have a good track record of reporting the facts fully and honestly–for a long time, not just the last year and a half.
I’ve been following this on Russian- and English-language sites. Nobody but BBC alleged Russian responsibility, and they cited no evidence. Remember when Boris Johnson personally tanked peace negotiations?
I have to ask, who else these days? b/c I fear we are demonizing Russia, Russians, and Putin the same way we demonized Iraq, Arabs, and Saddam Husein before our awful foray into that country. UK and France have been actively discouraging Ukraine during peace negotiations. See for yourself. en.wikipedia.org/…/Peace_negotiations_in_the_Russ…
Ah, poor NATO citzen, having their spoon-fed, govt-approved view of the world challenged by someone who actually pays attention to what the rest of the world says. Wallow in your ignorance. I’m done.
A plane with a lost wing that looks to have been hit by a missile with photos of it falling from the sky and videos of the explosion as it hits the ground on Russian soil. Russia tanked peace negotiations when they didn’t leave Ukraine.
There is more evidence about this than evidence of Putins butthole. I guess the only people who will really know are the salad flipping pro Russian propagandists.
Feared in the sense that we don't know. All this new information is coming from Russian State Media. Which is the equivalent of being informed of climate change on Fox News.
This is fascinating, the sails look quite different from what I would have imagined given the name. Looks more like those ships with the rotating cylinders on them visually, even though of course those operated on a very different principle.
Excited to see how well this works. Would be amazing if they could slash fuel usage significantly, I remember reading even those oversized kites already did a fair bit.
A former Minneapolis police officer has been sentenced to 57 months (almost five years) in prison for his role in the death of George Floyd.
The officer, Tou Thao, was found guilty of aiding and abetting manslaughter by a Minnesota judge in May.
Ex-officers Thomas Lane and J Alexander Kueng pleaded guilty to aiding and abetting second-degree manslaughter.
Thao, who was sentenced to three and a half years over his civil rights conviction, will serve the 57 months at the same time.
The former officer had waived his right to a jury trial in the manslaughter case, opting instead for Judge Peter Cahill to determine the verdict.
Judge Cahill added that Thao’s actions “were even more unreasonable in light of the fact that he was under a duty to intervene to stop other officers’ excessive use of force and was trained to render medical aid”.
Prosecutors in Donald Trump’s upcoming trial have asked for limits on what the ex-president can publicly say about the case, after he shared a threatening message online.
In their filing, the office of Special Counsel Jack Smith said the post raised concerns that Mr Trump could publicly reveal secret material, including grand jury transcripts obtained from prosecutors.
The Republican has already hit out against the special counsel, telling a crowd of supporters in Alabama on Friday that Mr Smith was a “deranged human being” and “a bad guy”.
Judge Tanya Chutkan gave Mr Trump’s legal team until 17:00 local time on Monday to respond to the submission.
In a statement shortly after the filing, a spokesperson for Mr Trump defended the social media post and insisted that he had been targeting political opponents.
Judge Chutkan, a noted hardliner on cases against those accused of participation in the Capitol riots, is expected to call in attorneys from both sides on 28 August to discuss setting a trial date.
In their filing, the office of Special Counsel Jack Smith said the post raised concerns that Mr Trump could publicly reveal secret material, including grand jury transcripts obtained from prosecutors.
Is this a problem that doesn’t have a solution?
Like, if I break confidentiality I’m fired. Is there not some “break the rules and we throw you in jail” or are they too cowardly?
It’s pretty complex to put a former president in jail. The logistics, alone, are a nightmare. Never mind the upheaval that would cause with the right-wing. So it’s not just being cowardly.
It’s interesting that they decided to make their own server and not just join a popular instances like Mastodon Social. I know part of it is then experimenting but if the goal is to just have a presence in the Fediverse, it sounds like a lot of effort for little reason.
It’s interesting you have this opinion; I figured this would be the biggest draw for corporations-- they’re no longer beholden to some third party for their media presence-- it’s all hosted and controlled by themselves;.
Yes and no. And verifying by domain is better, especially for people who are likely to be impersonated (ex. Journalists).
Rel=“me” doesn’t actually verify a user’s identity, it verifies that a user has a relationship with a website. The problem is that you need to leave Mastodon to make sure that the website actually verifies their identity. I’ve verified a connection between a Mastodon and Pixelfed account, for example, but it doesn’t tell you anything about who I am. It’s also much easier to spoof a website than it is to get the BBC to give you an account on their private instance.
It really works great the other way though! If you have a known identity here, you can be sure that the linked sites are legit.
I guess with twitter they learned the lesson of being beholden to a rogue CEO/admin who can take away verified status or change the rules on a whim. It is better that they maintain their own official presence that they control.
No, this is what they should be doing. It’s the difference between owning your house and renting. They get to make the rules on their instance, they’re not at the mercy of a tech bro company or a trash billionaire that might have a political agenda against actual journalism…
After what happened to the BBC and NPR on Twitter, who can blame them for saying “Fine, we’ll do it ourselves!”
How would that work if they have a toxic family and decided to kill 2 birds with one stone?
I mean if the CCP threatened my family while I’m abroad, I’d just go: “Lol go ahead, idgaf. They’re toxic anyways. Thanks for getting rid of them for me.” 😎
But too bad my toxic family is already here and I had to endure their abuse. 😥
I mean I have some pretty toxic family members as well, but at least a few of them are decent or innocent people. Pretty much everyone is going to have at least one family member that they care about even if most are shit heads.
