No, projects like the Fediverse require initial protectionism. If you let megacorporations into your project, they will dominate and gain control over how the protocol develops in the future. Google Chrome’s huge share of users has enabled it to get dangerously close to locking other browsers out of most of the Internet (the Web Integrity API shenanigans are just the start). Chrome also removed support for JPEG XL, killing that attempt at a standard and enshrining its own WebP. It’s called “Embrace, extend, and extinguish”.

If the Fediverse actually wants to grow, it must unite against this. Otherwise we will end up with a couple hundred thousand Fedipact hardliners and millions on Facebook 2. No progress will have been made.

iridaniotter ,
@iridaniotter@lemmygrad.ml avatar

Here’s one way it could happen

  1. Facebook joins the Fediverse, becoming the largest instance
  2. Majority of Fediverse embraces this
  3. Facebook decides to deviate slightly from ActivityPub
  4. Not wanting to be disconnected, majority of Fediverse follows them
  5. The real, ActivityPub-based Fediverse is dead (or as small as it was when it started) and now Facebook controls its (former) instances

Comrade Zuck doing us a favor and ideologically purging the Fediverse of all the liberals by extinguishing all the collaborationist instances. o7

Reuters, NYT, NPR etc. are all using the opportunity to complain about Xi of course, but no conspiracy theories yet. I went with the People’s Daily article cause it doesn’t use his death as an excuse to write an opinion piece. Also it’s straight from the source.

And yet you support the genocide of Palestinians. Curious!

Israeli minister: 'We are fighting human animals' (www.middleeastmonitor.com)

Israel’s Defence Minister Yaov Gallant has ordered the complete closure of the Gaza Strip, including a ban on the entry of food, water, fuel or access to electricity as Israel intensifies its bombardment of the besieged Strip in the wake of the surprise attack by the Palestinian resistance. His comments have drawn criticism...

Incorrect. Hamas, in accordance with the Quran, believes it is possible for Muslims, Jews, and Christians to live in harmony. Furthermore, in their updated charter they explicitly reject targeting Jews for simply being Jewish:

Hamas affirms that its conflict is with the Zionist project not with the Jews because of their religion. Hamas does not wage a struggle against the Jews because they are Jewish but wages a struggle against the Zionists who occupy Palestine. Yet, it is the Zionists who constantly identify Judaism and the Jews with their own colonial project and illegal entity.

Hamas rejects the persecution of any human being or the undermining of his or her rights on nationalist, religious or sectarian grounds. Hamas is of the view that the Jewish problem, anti-Semitism and the persecution of the Jews are phenomena fundamentally linked to European history and not to the history of the Arabs and the Muslims or to their heritage.

Goodbye Youtube and thanks for all the fish (infosec.pub)

Youtube let the other shoe drop in their end-stage enshittification this week. Last month, they required you to turn on Youtube History to view the feed of youtube videos recommendations. That seems reasonable, so I did it. But I delete my history every 1 week instead of every 3 months. So they don’t get much from my choices....

Fuck Google, I’m not paying them shit.

However, when Google and Amazon are nationalized then I’ll agree. Everyone should pay taxes which go into the government owned server farms.

China’s National Defense Minister Li Shangfu has been missing for weeks. Now, he’s under investigation for corruption and out of a job

Probably getting fired and/or arrested for corruption if I had to guess. Just a thought though.

China isn’t exactly happy with the US government right now due to the sanctions imposed over advanced chip technology, and this move could be viewed as part of a an ongoing reaction to that. So far, Micron has been the main target for retaliation. The US government already imposes its own restrictions on Chinese hardware and services. Notable, Huawei equipment is banned and TikTok can’t be installed on government devices.

Already did. This is the tit-for-tat regulation. America did cause, and China did effect.

Mask off with the fifth column accusations.

iridaniotter ,
@iridaniotter@lemmygrad.ml avatar

First you treat all foreigners of a specific nationality as a spy, then you treat everyone of a specific nationality as a spy, and then you round them up. The progression is quite simple, so let’s not start with step one. Military bases should just fix their security and end it at that.

Yes but these countries also have extremely low birth rates - 1.3, 0.8, and 1.2, respectively in 2021. Japan is finally feeling the effects and has an actively shrinking population. In 2022 it lost 556,000 people. To remedy this with immigration, they’d have to do quite the about face. There also isn’t an endless source of immigrants - eventually the countries that people are emigrating from will economically develop and have lower population growth. Sub-replacement fertility rates is an issue in any somewhat developed economy nowadays. It’s just the worst in East Asia. Countries need to figure out how to create a quality of life that will encourage stable population.

This is a fair argument against Elon Musk’s dream to colonize Mars - it is indeed an escapist fantasy. But with the recent and upcoming moon missions, the involved parties (government orgs!) are quite clear that they’re not doing it out of a false belief that they can make a self-sustaining colony. That stuff is over a century away. Only billionaires and their simps believe it lol.

iridaniotter ,
@iridaniotter@lemmygrad.ml avatar

Helium-3 is a fuel for fusion that does have its benefits, but most scientists are focused on Deuterium-Tritium reactions. On the moon, the most concentrated regolith has only 50 parts of helium-3 per billion. That is super sparse. Like, we may as well be sifting uranium out of Earth’s oceans at that point. And if we’re doing giant space-based megaprojects, the gas giants probably have higher concentrations of helium-3 or we could just beam power around from giant solar panels.

It’s not an SOE and like half of its stocks are owned by Americans. But the parent company got some government funding according to the US Congress, so the whole conglomerate is considered an SOE by America now. Sounds like trade war stuff to me lol

The nuclear bomb testing in the Pacific absolutely fucked over the people living there. But not all radiation is the same. There’s no way this wastewater affects them whatsoever unless they do a pilgrimage to Fukushima Daiichi and start drinking the pre-diluted water.

    This is completely ridiculous.

    In Minecraft, the immersive game owned by Microsoft, Russian players re-enacted the battle for Soledar, a city in Ukraine that Russian forces captured in January, posting a video of the game on their country’s most popular social media network, VKontakte.

    These authors clearly know nothing about Minecraft. Wow, some nationalists re-enacted a battle on their private Minecraft server. Woe is the world! All of Minecraft has been infected by Russian dezinformatsiya!

    A channel on the Russian version of World of Tanks, a multiplayer warfare game, commemorated the 78th anniversary of the defeat of Nazi Germany in May with a recreation of the Soviet Union’s parade of tanks in Moscow in 1945. On Roblox, the popular gaming platform, a user created an array of Interior Ministry forces in June to celebrate the national holiday, Russia Day.

    Defeating the Nazis is good, actually. And commemorating that is also good, actually.

    Yes, we live in the Information Age. We’ve been living in it for decades now, NYT. Nationalist zealots are going to post. They’re going to make reactionary content. It’s nothing new.
