What does your 'home' instance really matter?

One thing I’m not clear about is the impact my home instance has on me. I joined lemmy.world and am currently using the connect for lemmy app. I know when I sort by Local it will only show me posts from lemmy.world, but beyond that are there any things to keep in mind?...

Faking Pixel 5a

I’ve read on reddit that Google still provides unlimited photos backup if you own Pixel 5a and lower. On rooted Android you can fake that and get free backup storage, but who wants to give pictures to Google?! I was thinking if it’s possible or done by someone to create an environment on Docker by faking device info to...

[discussion]: regarding the best OS for a pirate

This post started out as a question, but throughout two days of googling it became this compilation of links. It had no momentum whatsoever. As soon as I got past the ads, scrolling was back to normal and the exact same flinging motion...

Tip for sharing Torrents/Magnets/Infohashes

Hey folks, I know we like encoding urls with base64 to keep the automated bots off our hindquarters, I figured out a neat little trick. As I’m sure you are aware, you can share a torrent with the infohash only, without the need to have all the formatting of a magnet link....

[META] Be careful where you post from, we can't control what your admins delete

The admins of your logged-in instance can delete any post of yours they want. This is not us doing it. The Lemmy UI is pretty bad at showing this. On some servers, an admins actions are listed as “mod” in the modlog even though we didn’t do it.
