Gnome completely different and buggy after update (Debian)

I just ran an update, as one does with apt update and upgrade. Afterwards all my monitors, bedies that one ancient 4 by 3 monitor stopped working. That 4 by 3 displays gnome at a lower resolution then usual. So I assumed that this has something to do with the nvidia drivers (has happened many times before). So I run...

I've hated the idea of wayland and still dislike many things about it, but 1st wayland is just a protocol, wlroots is the common base for everything. After trying labwc the current seemed to turn around quite a bit. Still missing some basic utilities that seem to only exist for sway and be based on sway.
Both sway and waybox are a disappointment.

So keep trying different projects to find what fits, because eventually we will be there.

What linux were you using if you don't mind asking?

@Guenther_Amanita @jackpot

yianiris ,

You should try arch or an arch fork, arch doesn't leave broken upstream pkgs unpatched too long, either they work or they are out

Qt since its 5->6 transition has become very restrictive in its non-commercially licensed terms. A legal team must have worked hard and long to stretch this as LGPL, meaning that GPL licensing needs more attention to detail.
There is practically no support and no way to report a bug unless you are a paying customer, is what I kept.

My main issue is those two GTK and QT, are pushing linux to become an MSw and Mac alternatives respectively. Both ugly and anti-unix

@2xsaiko @Eldritch

yianiris ,
@yianiris@kafeneio.social avatar

Qt is the base, what I meant is the KDE-plasma appears to push for the Mac-ation of linux while Gnome is pushing for the Microsoftization (aesthetics functionality wise) .. it may be the reverse I don't use either 4 of them.

wm with least possible overhead possible is my minimalist tendency for a graphic enviornment.

@2xsaiko

yianiris ,
@yianiris@kafeneio.social avatar

Do you want me to list software assuming you either run gnome or plasma?
Articles presenting the choice in linux as being those 2 desktops alone?
And all of it with direct code linking systemd utilities as there is no alternative or use of more common functions.

Suspiciously all current LTS expire on Dec 2026 there is nothing planned ahead of this. And 3y for 6.6 is the shortest of any LTS I remember. My bet is Linus retiring then LF taking over everything.

Why should devs pay any attention to wayland when after a decade the project still suffers from severe deficiencies of functionality over X11.

@TheGrandNagus @atzanteol

yianiris ,
@yianiris@kafeneio.social avatar

Because some developers act on their own consciousness and don't have a slavemaster corporate manager telling them what they need to do or not do.

When one doesn't like any of the available choices yet a new one is born. Can you measure how many v.terminals we have, or how many window managers on X11?

@Unsafe @mmstick

yianiris ,
@yianiris@kafeneio.social avatar

Partitioning among other things, the choice of efi/bios gpt/mbr, bootloader and its location, choice of filesystems, is dangerous to someone who has only win10 experience. Also the mindset of stop being a user and become a sys-admin is also foreign to windows users with MS dominating the role of sys-admin.

I would suspect that making a stable desktop inside docker ensures it would work everywhere else, no matter what the hw/sw of the host is.
I've only known docker as a building environment that ensures rebuildability and I can't say I ever liked it. I think its popularity comes from some myth of safety and security.

I had a brief opportunity to play around with an AT&T workstation running unix, more like a 386 than any sun/sgi machine that costed as 2 new sportscars. It had a very brief life, despite of the quality of the box, it was pretty useless. Slow as hell windows 95 would run circles around it.

Then out comes DEC/Alpha with Dec's unix, was it ultrix? And in those machines later windows NT was also ported, so it was a testbed between the two worlds. Then RHat CDs rained on us
@jollyrogue @eah

yianiris ,
@yianiris@kafeneio.social avatar

I am almost certain the first system alpha was ported to was ultrix, those other ones didn't exist yet. Probably developed for alpha, but on its pre-release demo I saw it was ultrix. Sometimes I confused ultrix with sgi/irix

What's your experiences with Debian and Rocky as a homeserver OS? (external-content.duckduckgo.com)

Hello there lemmings! Finally I have taken up the courage to buy a low power mini PC to be my first homeserver (Ryzen 5500U, 16GB RAM, 512 SSD, already have 6TB external HDD tho). I have basically no tangible experience with Debian or Fedora-based system, since my daily drivers are Arch-based (although I’m planning to switch...

That's 23s of your life wasted, but how would you set it?
NOPASSWD?

That's not secure by most experts, people do it as convenience, but say rogue code was run by user and sudo was open, ... done your system belongs to someone else now.

@NotATurtle @PrivateNoob

yianiris ,
@yianiris@kafeneio.social avatar

That is a strict position some have, but I didn't say this. Editing /etc/sudoers and giving sudo or wheel group users a no-passwd access is insecure.

sudo chmod 1777 /tmp

will not ask you for
passwd, it is like bypassing sudo

If you open sudoers you will see what I'm saying. In debiuntu it is sudo group in arch/void ... it is wheel group

I hope you are kidding, trolling, as those things, plus audio/video editing, started fron unix when it wasn't conceivable to do so on PCs with proprietary OS. All those corporations who later sold such sw copied/stole FOSS and dressed it up as their own.

No team or corporation can ever ever catch up to FOSS development. It is a neo-liberal fallacy that promotes them on marketing hype.

1 Did you boot the live medium with bios or efi?

2 Do you have libnvme and nvme-cli installed? If no, try them, if yes look up things on the manuals. It may be that your bootloader can't read/mount from the nvme

3 Ever since systemd-boot appeared things have been not working so well, now, have they?

yianiris ,
@yianiris@kafeneio.social avatar

systemd doesn't like booting with ro, too dumb to check then mount filesystems.

Many people browse 4-5 pages a day, see a few emails, print a few pdfs, and a core2duo, or x4, for 40#/$/Eu a box run flawlessly with linux and xfce/lxde for example.

How can a system that wasn't broken, without any changes/updates/upgrades ever break?

Its browser maybe will not be able to display some webpages correctly.

This myth/fear that arch breaks is based on ignorance and people who don't read output during an upgrade, it otherwise never happens.

For a long time debian, but after wheezy I turned sour and started hopping. Devuan, antiX, artix, void, obarun, joborun. Devuan turned nasty untrustworthy soon, antiX is still my favorite debian, artix appeared faking the init-war, void took a downturn adopting elogind, so for the past 6y obarun, joborun in the past 1.5, and antiX on the side keeping up with development and runit adaptation.

yianiris ,
@yianiris@kafeneio.social avatar

@hellvolution

I like the idea behind arch and pacman, but I'm trying to stay clear of large corporate dominating systems (systemd, qt, zstd, etc.) I try to use as many alternatives as I can, keep the unix ideals up, small, specific, contained, doing one thing only instead of being system layers trying to contol everything. ProChoice :)

A file system and a raid setup all in one with facebook's code for de-/compression ... yet another piece of software that tries to do the work for several others.

ext4 will rarely have extreme loads unless all you do is backup and mirroring. For more accurate data read/write and better checks use xfs and external journaling. On M2 it is by far the fastest solution and far more secure than ext.

yianiris ,
@yianiris@kafeneio.social avatar

@Max_P @yote_zip

On magnetic disk there is physical location for each bit of data written, for ssd it is all virtual space handled by internal software simulating a magnetic drive. The variation from disk to disk is much higher than the sensitivity of the fs.

You want accuracy and reliability of data storage, use HDD and Raid!
