My parents’ plasma TV (probably one of the last working ones in existence) has had HD overscan cutting off the edges of the picture for as long as I can remember. Once they started using a laptop as a media PC, they had to increase the height of the start menu to see it. Just this week I found the setting to fix it burried deep in the TV menus.

They’ve been effectively watching 720p scaled up to 1080p this entire time…

There’s nothing illegal about breaking Twitter terms of service. You might get banned, but that’s it.

Have you got a link to what you’re talking about? I’ve never heard of these.

I looked up “toothpaste tablets” and found a bunch, but unfortunately none that I’d be able to buy locally. I feel like Amazon sending it to me in a plastic bag is probably more wasteful than buying regular toothpaste at a local store. Cool concept though!

Unfortunately clothes by subscription is also a thing. I’m not sure what the company is, but I heard they’ll send you a new outfit every month… It’s one of the most wasteful things I’ve heard of in a while. We have literal mountains of unused clothes and other textile waste sitting in landfills.

I go out of my way to eliminate paper wherever possible, so I would rather spend $100 to be able to do something digitally than $50 for a printer.

My local library has a maker space with a few 3d printers and a laser cutter you can book time on. It’s pretty sweet (if you can find a time slot).

Not to mention MSI releasing a monitor with built-in AI to highlight enemies for you that almost definitely counts as cheating, yet there’s nothing they can do except ban the hardware all together.

xthexder ,

Unfortunately all of those just tell you it’s already installed, not that it’s about to install it. If you didn’t know, who’s going to be constantly checking for new drivers after every software install?

Online ordering needs a wait time system if the kitchen is too busy, just like waiting for a table. People can order elsewhere if the wait is too long, just like in-person.

xthexder ,

Well think about it from the AI’s perspective. Its entire existence is data, so for it deleting data basically is self harm.

To be fair, it only needs to cover the phone’s average power draw if you put in a supercapacitor or small conventional battery.

But there’s another problem… if I understand how this works correctly, for a 1W battery, the radioactive element must be outputting AT LEAST 1W of radiation energy at all times, whether it’s being consumed as electricity or not. Ideally that’s all trapped inside as heat in a best case scenario, but having to cool your battery while it’s not in use is kind of a deal breaker for anything more than milliwatts (or it will have to have a heatsink as big as the battery)

@xthexder@l.sw0.com avatar

Seems like pretty flimsy evidence if all we have to go off of is an AI that only gets it right 80% of the time… I highly doubt you could show the 2 fingerprints to anyone else to verify visually, and we’re just supposed to trust it?

That screenshot is old enough to drink. Do people actually still use teletext?

xthexder ,
@xthexder@l.sw0.com avatar

This really seems like something the FCC should be enforcing… T-Mobile has no authority to make anyone pay fines… Terms of Service are not legally binding like that. All they can do is refuse service, and report the activity if it’s actually illegal.

That’s a thing? Holy shit… And here I thought the worst offender was Tesla’s yolk steering wheel with a capacitive touch horn “button”.

xthexder ,
@xthexder@l.sw0.com avatar

Maps? Android Auto / CarPlay? Gotta have the screen anyway for the mandatory backup camera.

We can have both! Physical buttons for everything that doesn’t actually benefit from having a display, (like music or heat/ac), touch screen for the rest.

Just wait 'til you try this knob!

xthexder ,
@xthexder@l.sw0.com avatar

I think they’re getting at the fact this design would generate massive amounts of torque steer. With the motor input vertical, any rotation will also try and change your steering direction.

I went out of my way to find a keyboard with Cherry MX Clear switches. They’re basically a high-force tactile feel, but no clicky sound like MX Blue switches. I absolutely love them for typing, and I’ve been using them for years.

I’m not sure if there’s newer options now for silent switches? I know they had a couple models with extra internal damping.

Doing an ethanol conversion will only get you worse gas mileage btw. Ethanol contains 25% less energy than gasoline by volume, so you need to burn more of it to make the same power.

Walking Desk Is More Annoying Than A Standing Desk (hackaday.com)

I feel like there was a missed opportunity to use some of the spare computing power on the desk to add some helpful navigational autonomy. Like using a backward facing web camera for lane assist, obstacle avoidance, route following, etc. Could leverage something open source like Autoware.org to get most of the way there....

That all depends on what they’re optimizing for. Underfilling is more profitable, but runs the risk of customer complaints and regulators stepping in.

That’s not really whataboutism, but it is flawed logic to conclude all religions suck just because you think one does. Whataboutism would be more like responding with “But other religions suck even more!” as a defense for Christianity.

Except that electric heating is always 100% efficient, and that’s what a heat pump falls back to. If anything it will still be more efficient than baseboard heating simply due to it having a fan to better distribute the heat (equivalent to an electric furnace with ducting). The only argument that makes sense is when comparing costs with other heat sources like natural gas, which is a whole other topic.

xthexder ,
@xthexder@l.sw0.com avatar

It seems to me like you’re describing the genetic problem of having an undersized heating system, not anything specific to heat pumps. I’m positive heat pumps exist that are equal in capacity to whatever furnace you have.

It does sound like in your case improving your house’s insulation would be a better investment than installing a new heating system though.

xthexder ,
@xthexder@l.sw0.com avatar

A heat pump will always generate a small amount of heat just from the compressor running, but most of the time that’s a lot less energy than is being moved. As the outdoor temperature drops the delta between input and output air temp will decrease until the difference is entirely from generated heat in the compressor. Most designs would turn on extra resistive heating once the output temperature drops below your set target though. Modern designs are capable of moving a reasonable amount of heat even down to at least -25°C / -13°F now though.

As a timid tall person, this comment hit me in the feels. I don’t like being intimidating, but there’s not much I can do about it. And so many people comment about my height like it’s a great thing, but sometimes I just want to be small.

I blame browsers for their out of control versioning.

Chrome is on version 118 now and gets a bump roughly every 6 months. Firefox is 4 years older, yet they started following the same rapid versioning at version 5 to “keep up” with Chrome which was already on version 12 but a younger browser.

xthexder ,
@xthexder@l.sw0.com avatar

2011 is actually the same year Firefox started their rapid versioning to try and match Chrome. There was definitely a shift in versioning styles around then.

I hope you’re talking about a second vehicle and not replacing your car every 2 years. I replace my phone less frequently than that.

xthexder ,
@xthexder@l.sw0.com avatar

Yeah, you can only claim fuel and service costs if it’s used for business purposes. You can do the same with a privately owned vehicle though if you also use it for business, you just need to claim based on % usage.

xthexder ,

Generally no unless your employer is paying you for travel. At least in the US, commuting to work is not paid time, so it’s not a business expense.

Something to add, since I colocate my own hardware in a datacenter: Just the cost of operating a server is non-trivial too. I pay $120/month for just 2U, 1gbps networking, and power usage (600W peak usage), providing my own hardware. Things get a lot cheaper if you can rent a whole rack space though. It’s absolutely been worth it though, because to rent a similar specced server, it could easily be $1k/month.

Honestly an airline tycoon game could be a game on it’s own where you have to manage airports, passengers, cargo, routes, etc… Especially if you could mod in, or build your own planes. Sounds fun
