I don’t think the wasted energy cost would ever be lower than parking costs. They’ll need a depot of some sort for maintenance and charging/fueling anyway that they could return to when there’s less demand. That’s assuming the cars aren’t privately owned, but in that case your car could just drive further away (or even all the way home) to park.

New Anti-Consumer MacBook Pros - Teardown And Repair Assessment - Apple Silicon M1/M2 (youtu.be)

No surprises here. Just like the lockdown on iPhone screen and part replacements, Macbooks suffer from the same Apple’s anti-repair and anti-consumer bullshit. Battery glued, ssd soldered in and can’t even swap parts with other official parts. 6000$ laptop and you don’t even own it.

I would love a Framework laptop, but my current laptop (a Dell XPS 15 from 2017) is still going strong. Buying a new repairable laptop defeats the whole sustainable thing if there’s nothing wrong with my current one. I’ve done 2 fixes to my current laptop: Replaced the speakers that had died, and added thermal pads to the VRMs to fix an overheating / throttling issue. Even the battery is fine still.

If you can’t trust peer review from experts in a field, many aspects of society break down. For example:

  • How can we trust the word of an engineer that says a bridge is safe? Did you verify the calculations yourself? Have you personally tested the tensile strength of that rebar? Better to just avoid bridges to be safe.
  • How can we trust the word of a doctor when they prescribe something? Did you personally look up all the possible side effects and made sure you’ll be safe? Do you research clinical trials yourself to verify efficacy? If you don’t trust your doctor, you’ll be right at home with the anti-vaxxers.
  • How can you trust a lawyer to argue your best case? There’s thousands of pages of law that most people haven’t read. Do you know for yourself that there isn’t some past precedent that completely flips your case? Defending yourself is a bad idea for a lot of reasons.

Nobody can be an expert in every field. It’s completely unfeasible for most people to verify source code themselves, but that doesn’t mean open source doesn’t matter. Society operates on a degree of trust in our fellow humans that ARE experts in their field. The more experts in agreement the better, since nobody is infallible.

I’m not sure what you’re suggesting people do? Go live in a hole by themselves because the world is full of liars and deceivers? Or become superhuman and hand verify every possible thing that could negatively effect them?

That’s a fair statement to say open source on it’s own doesn’t add any security. I will say that any developer who’s intentionally adding vulnerabilities to their code is less likely to publish the source, simply because someone COULD see it. With the number of automated vulnerability scanners on Github, it would require a lot of extra work to go undetected, when simply going closed source is an option. Once again, the more open the better, since there’s fewer places to hide things.

I used to play so many of their games. The Escape Velocity series was great. And I remember one called Slithereens. Oh the nostalgia!

Going from 12V DC to 120 AC and back to the 5-20V DC that USB-C provides is very inefficient (both in energy, cost, and space). Just get a USB cigarette plug adapter that can do fast charging. Right now I see a 60W 2 port USB-C one on Amazon for $10.

The 120V inverter only really makes sense if you’ve got other stuff to charge like a laptop or portable speaker that’s not USB.

Yeah, LEDs are pretty ideal in the cold as long as they’re properly sealed from humidity. They don’t heat up your fridge extra every time you open the door. Oven lights definitely wouldn’t work unless you want a nice plastic glaze on top of the cake you’re baking.

The light fixture in my apartment started flickering and not turning on all the way, and it was only a few years old (On a dimmer switch, the dimmer-compatible driver in the fixture died). I couldn’t even fix it myself because it’s hardwired and my landlord wouldn’t be happy with me playing electrician. So I was stuck with no light in that room for weeks until the landlord got it replaced.

Not to mention I couldn’t change the color temperature to match the rest of my lights, which drove me nuts.

xthexder ,
@xthexder@l.sw0.com avatar

They said 20-30% of bulbs sold, not of bulbs currently installed. There’s a lot of people who are replacing incandescent with incandescent where an LED would work just fine. I highly doubt oven bulbs and such are that significant a portion of household bulbs sold. (I also don’t know where this data is from, so feel free to correct me)

xthexder ,
@xthexder@l.sw0.com avatar

Yeah, it’s not a lot of heat, but it starts making a bigger difference once you’ve got the fridge packed full of stuff (less air loss, also makes it take longer to find stuff, so the light stays on longer). I’ve had items at the back near the bulb get extra freezer burned because of the constant heating/cooling. That was quite an old fridge/freezer though, so not the most efficient to start with, and the temperature control could have been better.

I do love chest freezers. They’re way more efficient and I find a lot easier to organize too. There’s some fridge/freezer combos that have a freezer drawer, but I’ve yet to find one that’s fully enclosed so all the cold air stays in. Most I’ve seen have wire baskets or something for the drawer… Having space for a separate chest freezer is not a luxury everyone has.

It’s from this article: $35 billion spent / 1.1GW output = $31.8/watt

I think $31 billion would have been the more accurate number to use. There wouldn’t the same contractor buyout thing for every reactor.

Newer models come with a heat pump now, so running the heat should be just as efficient as running the AC.

Lemmy relies heavily on SSL, which requires a domain name. You can’t get an SSL certificate for an IP address as far as I know.

You prove you own the domain to the certificate issuer, and from then on, anyone can verify that they’re talking to the right server.

IPs could be technically possible if server identities were validated separately like with SSH keys, but that would be a major change in the protocol.

I dislike the “Why not just Google it?” argument because I’ve arrived at too many forum/reddit/stackoverflow posts that are the top Google result with comments on them saying: “This information is already on Google”

I would love it if Lemmy could start to curate information so that instances start showing up in search results more.

Hows does the limitation of liability section in basically every open source license factor into this? It seems like you’d be fine as long as you aren’t personally using the code commercially? Or would this new law somehow override the open source license?

xthexder ,
@xthexder@l.sw0.com avatar

This article seems poorly written and says the same thing over and over again with slightly different wording. I would have liked some more specifics.

The Cyber Resilience Act (CRA) could have several implications for the open source software sector:

  1. Increased legal and financial responsibility
  2. Deterrent effect on the development of open source software
  3. Lack of consideration for the specificities of open source software
  4. Lack of consultation of the open source software community

Only 2 of those are implications of the law. 3 and 4 are redundant and are not caused by the law’s wording. They wouldn’t even be a problem if not for 1. 2 is also caused by 1 in a fairly obvious way.

Why is your user flagged as a bot account? You certainly aren’t behaving like a bot.

xthexder ,
@xthexder@l.sw0.com avatar

There’s a “Bot Account” checkbox in your user profile settings. You should be able to just deselect it, and you’ll be a normal user.

Personally I use dnsrobocert with my own domains. I’ve got a few subdomains that point to a Wireguard subnet IP for private network apps (so it resolves to nothing if you’re not on VPN). Having a real valid SSL cert is really nice vs self signing, and it keeps my browser with HTTPS-Everywhere happy.

I second this. It helps that basically every distro is highly customizable, so if you don’t like some default settings or something’s not supported on a specific distro, it’s usually still possible to get it working with some manual tweaking. You don’t want to be spending the time for every application though, so finding a distro that supports most of what you need out of the box is a good suggestion.

UTF-8 is absolutely magical in how it’s backwards compatible with ASCII. Windows still uses UTF-16 which makes supporting Unicode filenames and stuff a huge pain compared to linux. At least pretty much the entire web is UTF-8.

Got any source for that? That’s in pretty stark contrast to what I see him doing now with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.

xthexder ,
@xthexder@l.sw0.com avatar

I don’t see how funding education is a bad thing, and I don’t believe the Gates Foundation is intent on controlling things. It’s not like they get any equity for their donations.

I’ll be honest, I had to look up what it even means to be a charter school, since they don’t exist in Canada (except for Alberta apparently). I’m not sure I agree with their weird public/private position for accountability, but I certainly don’t equate donating money to them as wanting control and privatization. Charter schools are also funded by tax dollars anyway.

Well, we had Windows 10 for over 5 years before Windows 11. 10 was supposedly the last version they were doing, so it’s a little surprising they’re back to regular major releases now.
