The alternative is moving away from rare earth minerals to more common ones for battery tech, which is starting to happen. A long term transition will likely require more fundamental shifts in society, which will bring a lot of benefits too. But in the short term, fossil fuels need to be abandoned rapidly.

The Behind the Bastards podcast goes into another aspect of this repression, of paying mercenary hackers to target minorities. And it has intensified under Modi.

vividspecter ,

Thanks, fixed.

Not a bad article, but I wish they wouldn’t use politically neutral language like fringe or polarisation or even just conspiracy theorist, as if the issues aren’t almost exclusively happening on one side of politics. Call a spade a spade already.

vividspecter ,

And because it’s politically controversial, you can expect delays of many, many years for new builds in most democracies. Which is precisely why conservatives have been pushing it, because it allows coal and gas to dominate for a bit longer.

vividspecter OP ,

They might also want to be in the running for a future Steam Deck or Linux based gaming console. And fully open source drivers is a requirement, especially if Valve is involved.

vividspecter ,

Are you disputing the results of the poll? Although I will say that it was a poll of registered voters, which I would expect to skew old, conservative, and white.

vividspecter ,

It’s useful to minimize data leaks too, since (especially when combined with simple login etc) you can avoid giving out your real address ever.

I’m not sure why the word victims is in quotes. That seems like an accurate description to me.

Tesla’s in its flop era (www.theverge.com)

When Tesla releases its first quarter earnings this afternoon, the company’s CEO Elon Musk will field the usual questions about new products, new factories, and progress toward its futuristic vision of self-driving cars and robot workers. But Musk will also face increasingly urgent questions about its current state of affairs...

vividspecter ,

They might finally develop the affordable, mass market car that Musk has been claiming is in the works for years, instead of idiotic and expensive passion projects like the cybertruck.

vividspecter ,

The execution is very poor, and I’d rather these dangerous monstrosities go away and be replaced by smaller, less dangerous, and more practical vehicles. And ideally, car ownership will decline over the long term with viable alternatives to driving hopefully being developed across the world (but that’s a whole other discussion).

vividspecter ,

It’s the Model 2, which he has being talking about for years but it’s not clear if it will ever happen.

vividspecter ,

Probably realised that “full” self-driving the way people think of it is not likely to happen in our lifetimes. And Tesla’s existing system is an out and out scam.

But I expect he’ll try and combine it with his stupid tunnel idea, instead of, I don’t know, a train?

vividspecter ,

Even before they left the EU I always considered the UK as different from mainland Europe. And stuff like this is a big part of it, along with culturally being more similar to North America and Australia.

Build infrastructure that doesn’t prioritise the car (and is consequently safer, even for drunks) and these events will happen a lot less often. Traffic calming, massively lower speed limits, banning absurdly large SUVs, and providing viable (and safe) alternatives to driving will make everyone much safer.

Red Lobster eyes bankruptcy option after $11M in losses from endless shrimp (abcnews.go.com)

“Last year, Red Lobster reported $11 million in operating losses following its flubbed ‘Ultimate Endless Shrimp’ deal, which backfired when it reeled in too many customers after the limited-time promo became a permanent menu fixture last June. The restaurant chain later reported $12.5 million in losses in the fourth...

Jonathan Haidt

And his theory of morality seems to be just an elaborate justification for how conservative viewpoints are equally valid (or even more valid, because it claims that conservatives care about all foundations equally, rather than some of them), or a long-winded “very fine people, on both sides”.

And the additional foundations that conservatives care about are all shitty reasons to support something (loyalty, authority, sanctity).

vividspecter ,

It’s also just sexism. Women are seen as having less worth than men so by that logic doing anything feminine as a man is debasing yourself. And non straight, cis culture is seen as subverting what they believe as the natural hierarchy of men on top.

Recommendations for an authentic mousepad?

Hiya peeps, my mouse mat has served its time, and it is time for a new one. Until now, I’ve had one of these huge ones, that cover half the desk. But I think this time I’m gonna aim for a normal-sized one. I’d also like to avoid cheap Chinese wares or anything low-quality. Anyone got any nice recommendations for mousepads?...

vividspecter ,

Steel series pads tend to be pretty good and have lasted for me, although I don’t play competitive fps anymore so that’s a major part of it.

vividspecter ,

P5 Royal. Hasn’t quite grabbed me yet maybe because I played most of vanilla a few years ago and it’s pretty slow going at times.

vividspecter ,

It’s been long enough since I played the original and I didn’t actually finish it so strikers may spoil it a little. To be honest, I think I’m just not that in the mood for games in general at the moment, which is fine. The desire will come when it comes.

Games that still need more patience: what games released a year ago (or older) are you waiting for a sale on? Or that need another patch?

Other than a slew of Nintendo titles that maybe hopefully will come down in price (the patient gamers’ bane), I have my eye on the next time Divinity: Original Sin 2 goes on sale. A friend who never plays anything other than WoW loved playing Larian’s newest with me and I’m trying to get her to pick this up. Pretty sure...

vividspecter ,

Music can be added back to vanilla mostly as well with a mod.

vividspecter ,

And the effects of climate change making forest fires in general much more severe and more difficult to control.

vividspecter ,

Those huge rents exist because demand exceeds supply (amongst other reasons). People want to live in walkable neighborhoods and not suburbs where you have to drive everywhere to survive.

vividspecter ,

it’s that there’s not enough space to accommodate everyone so it’s not financially realistic to most people who want to.

There’s plenty of space, it’s used incredibly poorly due to free parking, zoning regulations, and running highways through cities. The financial component is simply there aren’t enough of these spaces and they aren’t dense enough (and they could stand to include a lot more public and social housing, but people oppose it because they don’t want “those” people in their neighborhoods).

That’s not to say that reforming suburbs to make them more livable wouldn’t be a part of the solution too.

vividspecter ,

Shit person writes in name of other shit person, instead of voting for an even shittier person.

vividspecter ,

You mean Toyota, the same company that has spent years lobbying against emissions standards in Australia and dragging their feet on EVs?

vividspecter ,

“Mechanical” models that have a veneer of legitimacy have certainly compromised peoples’ view of reality. See also views of traffic that treat it like a liquid, so politicians keep advocating for “just one more lane” despite induced demand being proven close to a 100 years ago.

vividspecter ,

In fact, if you are capable of the admittedly high bar of self hosting, use bit warden instead.

Vaultwarden, typically, because it’s fully free and more resource efficient. But bitwarden as the client of course.

vividspecter ,

At this moment, three bills — one in Florida (SB 718), one in West Virginia (HB 5319) and the other in Tennessee (SB 1754) — are making their way through their respective state legislatures. All three will allow for a felony charge to be levied against people who expose a first responder to fentanyl or a fentanyl analog, such as carfentanil or remifentanil.

All Republican states. They sure never miss an opportunity to incarcerate and kill the poor.

vividspecter ,

Oh and HDMI prevents open source GPU drivers supporting HDMI 2.1 natively.

Steve Jobs killed himself because he thought he knew better than his doctors. Well, that’s wacked out too, but at least it’s not being a Nazi…

Steve Jobs was always a piece of shit, and he had that diet well before he got cancer. But yeah the fact he continued to double down in the face of death shows how much of a narcissist he was.

vividspecter ,

The British media in general seem to be fillled with TERFs, like the UK Guardian (the Australian paper doesn’t seem to have the issue that I’ve noticed).

vividspecter ,

Yes, considering the tiny amounts of money it often takes to own these people.

Why did more than 1,000 people die after police subdued them with force that isn't meant to kill? (apnews.com)

Carl Grant, a Vietnam veteran with dementia, wandered out of a hospital room to charge a cellphone he imagined he had. When he wouldn’t sit still, the police officer escorting Grant body-slammed him, ricocheting the patient’s head off the floor....

vividspecter ,

A lot of statistics about dangers in society seem to be entirely centred around deaths. Which is understandable of course, but underplays the many other harmful outcomes that can occur short of that.

The translation is more like a reimplementation, and sometimes that reimplementation is faster than native. But it’s also because the Linux kernel is faster in some areas, and typically more memory efficient too.

And it’s partly also the quality of GPU drivers, especially in the case of AMD (although they have been getting better on the Windows side in recent years).

vividspecter , (edited )

I first gamed on Linux in a time where Humble Indie Bundles weren’t a thing yet and Wine was still very limited. Console emulators and some older native ports was all that was available. Oh and I walked uphill, both ways.
