@philosophy Here is my MSc thesis from 2016 critically evaluating the solution to the Ship of Thesis problem which denies that there ever was a ship to begin with (mereological nihilism).

@rb3n @philosophy The author of that paper seems to have fundamentally misunderstood the concept of a philosophy thought experiment.

The practicalities of how the trolley situation might arise or who the agents involved are is immaterial. It is designed to elucidate the principles of different ethical approaches.

It challenges the consequentialist to consider the costs of acting on behalf of "the greater good"; likewise it asks the deontologist to consider whether ethics can be axiomatic.

@rb3n @philosophy Daniel Dennet famous called thought experiments "intuition pumps": Scenarios taken at face value that help us get to the heart of a problem without having an emotive reaction cloud our understanding.

When I was an undergrad studying greek philosophy I wondered why my lecturer used the example of cake when discussing akkrasia (temptation) instead of sex or alcohol. However reflecting on it cake is ideal for expressing the concept without eliciting an emotional reaction.

If you agree that there are lesser and greater evils and you agree that being imprisoned, enslaved and killed is worse than being imprisoned and killed then why believe that being vegetarian is better than only eating meat (and not other animal products)? If you only ate meat, you'd only be imprisoning and killing animals, but if you only non-meat animal products, then you're necessarily doing that and enslaving animals, which seems worse.

@apodoxus @philosophy I don't think all species experience these traumas in the same way. For example mussels have no brain and no central nervous system so I would happily consign them to a fate that would be horrifying for a human.

My paper on monadic panpsychism, a theory I developed in my PhD dissertation, has been accepted for publication in Synthese! 🥳
