A very fun game where you aim to outsmart AI by convincing it that certain philosophical concepts are more closely related than they actually are! 🤖

An imposing figure in the philosophy of mind, whose books on consciousness were among the first I read on the topic, always written in his distinctively clear, illustrative, and engaging style. His passing is a tremendous loss to academia.

Question about Google Docs: did they fix the issue with lag when handling large files, like whole books or dissertations?

I remember that being a dealbreaker and reason why I never used it while writing my dissertation.

Whether you approach it from a left-wing, right-wing, spiritual, or whatever angle, being against academia, higher education, and mistrusting experts is the worst kind of anti-intellectualism that seriously harms society. Full stop.

People will either delegate their tasks to AI and become detached and uninformed, or they'll have a perfectly patient personal instructor that will help them drastically expand their knowledge. Likely, it will be a mix of both, and we should advocate for the latter. It'll be interesting, watching the future unravel.

I noticed that philosophical discussions in Croatia are often based on listing lots of famous names and works, as if the main goal is to impress with erudition. Very rarely do I hear: I think that, or my view is that... To me, that's not philosophy, but merely its history.

I'm starting to rethink my commitment to being detached from philosophical views, treating them as things to entertain and play with without paying heed to them being mine, now that AI is so prevalent. Maybe we should be attached and value individuals and their original ideas because they're a form of creative and personal expression.

(Also, can you tell that I've been thinking about the ethics of AI a lot recently? 😄)

I used to write poetry while in London, in an area that had some pretty run-down parts. I gave up since I'm not good at poetry, but I thought this one was slightly better than the rest. What do you think? 😅

piri-piri and p*ss
stain the paper sheets
of everyday-value men

their hands grow
out of London planes
to pray; or serve curry

and whether or not
they lose their bet,
a party takes place

friends –
who I miss,
when I'm gone

What makes someone a cognitive scientist? Is it a degree in cognitive science? Or in one of its constitutive disciplines along with a research focus on the mind? Or publishing in cognitive science journals? Or something else? 🤔

@cogsci @cognition @academicchatter

ninokadic OP ,
@ninokadic@mastodon.social avatar

@michaelgemar @cogsci @cognition @academicchatter I'm leaning towards that as well. There seems to be a necessary element of collaboration, not just interdisciplinarity in principle, in cognitive science. Of course, if someone gets a degree in cognitive science in a programme that involves such interdisciplinarity and collaboration, that would be great too. So great that I'm tempted to get another Master's in it, it's really attractive to me haha

ninokadic OP ,
@ninokadic@mastodon.social avatar

@michaelgemar @cogsci @cognition @academicchatter Yeah, I think it's pretty much the same here in Europe (or at least the UK and Croatia). However, a short one-year MA or a part-time flexible one alongside work could be fun, just to fill out gaps in knowledge.

Am I the only one who unequivocally thinks that philosophy has made progress? Perhaps I have a different definition of what progress means, but surely I can't be the only one?

The number of theories and arguments that philosophers uncovered, as well as the clarity and breadth of their analyses, is certainly progress.

@philosophy @academicchatter

ninokadic OP ,
@ninokadic@mastodon.social avatar

@apublicimage @philosophy @academicchatter Historical progress, over time. Because it's not just making it up, theories have to be coherent, supported by arguments, follow some epistemic virtues (like parsimony, being compatible with our general worldview, etc.), and they usually build on previous work in the field, including within and without philosophy.

ninokadic OP ,
@ninokadic@mastodon.social avatar

@apublicimage @philosophy @academicchatter I see it more as trying to develop coherent explanations, not about uncovering the ultimate truth, I think no one really does philosophy with that premise any more. I also didn't mean to imply that “being part of tradition” is a truth-maker, nor do I see how that follows from what I said. It was merely a description of how work happens. Obviously, I strongly disagree that there is no progress. Theories today are clearer and better argued.

ninokadic OP ,
@ninokadic@mastodon.social avatar

@DominikDammer @philosophy @academicchatter Many do think that it's useless, though. However, it's usually useless to listen to people who hold such beliefs, so touché 😀

ninokadic OP ,
@ninokadic@mastodon.social avatar

@DominikDammer @philosophy @academicchatter Yeah. Though not all, there's a group of right-wing people who like stoicism, Christian philosophy and the classics, because it's part of their traditionalist worldview.

ninokadic OP ,
@ninokadic@mastodon.social avatar

@PhilSciProf @DominikDammer @philosophy @academicchatter I fully agree with you. Despite what I said, though, I definitely think it does both ways, and we philosophers should be in dialogue with scientists and learn from them. I'm sad there's even talk of some sort of divide or competition.

ninokadic OP ,
@ninokadic@mastodon.social avatar

@PhilSciProf @DominikDammer @philosophy @academicchatter I really appreciate hearing stories like yours. We should definitely all work together. That's why I'm very into cognitive science, I think. At least when it comes to the mind, it invites researchers from different fields to collaborate in a mutually respectful manner. They realised they needed each other.

ninokadic OP ,
@ninokadic@mastodon.social avatar

@ivanrmanuel @PhilSciProf @DominikDammer @philosophy @academicchatter Interesting, I would never even consider such a connection!

ninokadic OP ,
@ninokadic@mastodon.social avatar

@slowenough @DominikDammer @philosophy @academicchatter I mean, I think it pretty clearly adds up to a net positive for progress, tbh

ninokadic OP ,
@ninokadic@mastodon.social avatar

@slowenough @DominikDammer @philosophy @academicchatter I think most obvious progress is in ethics and political philosophy, at the minimum by expanding the sphere of what it now encompasses: more people groups, animals and the environment, even potential AI, other planets, space exploration, etc.

In consciousness, the most obvious example is cognitive science, which sprang forth from a heavily philosophical background - functionalism, computationalism, multiple realisability thesis, etc.

ninokadic OP ,
@ninokadic@mastodon.social avatar

@slowenough @DominikDammer @philosophy @academicchatter Yeah, though I can only speak from a western perspective, given that that encompasses my interests, at least mostly.

ninokadic OP ,
@ninokadic@mastodon.social avatar

@slowenough @DominikDammer @philosophy @academicchatter I think the largest contribution of 'traditional' phenomenology (think Brentano, Husserl, Merleau-Ponty) is recognising certain things about consciousness that then became useful both within and outside of philosophy. For example, embodied cognition is a big buzzword now in cognitive science, robotics, and its direct predecessor was Merleau-Ponty.

Analytic philosophy:
We can benefit science, trust us, we matter… 😞

Continental philosophy:
Science yet fails to rise – sich erheben – to the level of philosophy 😎

@philosophy

ninokadic OP ,
@ninokadic@mastodon.social avatar

@ber @philosophy I think your professor is mostly right, in the sense that the topics continental and analytic philosophers talk about are no longer as strictly divided as before. However, I do think the methods can be differentiated, as well as the general stance towards philosophy. Continental roughly being "philosophy is independent, closer to humanities", and analytic "philosophy works together with science, farther from humanities". Also, continental prefers a historical approach... (1/2)

ninokadic OP ,
@ninokadic@mastodon.social avatar

@ber @philosophy ... While analytic doesn't emphasise it as much. You can definitely still find departments that are more or fully analytic or continental, one side or the other... (2/2)

ninokadic OP ,
@ninokadic@mastodon.social avatar

@ber @philosophy Haha, I fell asleep early and woke up around 4:30am 💀 I'm in Croatia, it's 7:15 am here now

The opprobrium panpsychists sometimes face is shocking. Yet, on the other end, I rarely see other theories receiving such spirited support. Maybe the fact that it's so polarising speaks volumes of its epistemic value, at the very least as a deep and thorough critique of established mores in literature on consciousness 🧠

@philosophy @philosophyofmind

ninokadic OP ,
@ninokadic@mastodon.social avatar

@archesofscratch73 @philosophy @philosophyofmind In contemporary discourse, panpsychism is usually defined as the view that some sort of basic consciousness is a property of entities at the fundamental level of reality, like fundamental particles. Some combinations of those particles lead to a unified conscious whole, like human brains. The advantage is that panpsychism is between reductive physicalism and substance dualism, integrating consciousness into our picture of the world.

In the future, I'd like to find myself in something other than because I don't exactly like the sort of attention it's getting, or what the theory is becoming, especially in popular discourse (but also, to a certain extent, in academia). I think I'll delve more deeply into the physicalist and cognitive science side of things when it comes to consciousness 🧠

@academicchatter

ninokadic OP ,
@ninokadic@mastodon.social avatar

@Pierrette @academicchatter That's fair, but I think I'd like to have a more minimalist approach, where I try to find parsimonious arguments or theories, informed both by philosophical discussions and empirical research. It's just a personal preference, not to say that there's no value in panpsychism and similar theories, it's just not something I'd personally like to be known as forever haha.
