I am apalled to see the comments here making light of the death of a child with their “win stupid prizes” schtick.

Instead of talking about access to gun safety education if kids are in a gun household. Instead of reminding parents about the absolute necessity of gun safes. Instead of calling for gun reform so kids can’t get guns in the first place.

But no, carry on victim blaming, seems much more productive.

spujb ,

Not instead but in addition, sure! I personally don’t see the relevance of this here but yes, mental health awareness is important

Unless this is a troll comment and you are just being snarky :( in which case leave me alone

spujb , (edited )

It was a child (technically an underaged adolescent, yes). 17 year olds are not allowed to drink, smoke, be in porn, rent cars, and many more things because they do not have the mental capacity of an adult. Victim blaming young people with as-yet unformed mental capacity does nothing for anyone but make you feel self righteous.

CDC:

Unintentional injury is a leading cause of death among U.S. children and adolescents aged 0–17 years, and firearms are a leading injury method.

Securing firearms (e.g., locked, unloaded, and separate from ammunition) is protective against unintentional firearm injury deaths among children and adolescents, underscoring the importance of promoting secure firearm storage.

spujb ,

I mean you are definitely correct. The response to a kid dying still shouldn’t be joking about how dumb he was.

All kids are dumb; they’re kids. That’s the point. A society that lets kids get their hands on guns untrained has already failed.

spujb , (edited )

(Edited to be kinder)

This is absolutely a ‘gun safety’ issue, because any gun safety course will have treat every gun as if it’s loaded as one of the first principles.

The average 17 year old driving has had dozens of hours of training before being licensed. The same should apply to 17 year olds with guns at minimum.

spujb ,

Unironically yes. Kids are dumb as shit but if we as a society insist on guns being around, the least we can do is reduce the harm by giving them the education they need to be around guns safely.

You snarked your way into being correct.

spujb , (edited )

Objection, speculation.

I’m not here to debate what would have happened, I am just disappointed that the immediate reaction to a youth’s tragic death is guffawing.

I hate cars too and I think they shouldn’t be around either. But as long as they are I am going to insist that kids get drivers ed training and that that training is constantly improved upon. I am being quite consistent here.

spujb ,

Truly! I hope that this post can serve as a reminder to parents that guns should be locked in a safe. Basic gun safety education can also be immensely valuable.

spujb ,

🤝 i guess lol

i also agree that all kids are idiots. never stated otherwise. :) take care

spujb ,

Thank you for your comment. I won’t do any speculation either way regarding this specific situation.

What is important is the messaging to parents and society at large of the importance of the safety measures that we both seem to agree on :) Blaming and laughing at the kid straight away in this situation detracts from that crucial message that gun safes and basic education for kids save lives.

spujb ,

fucking iconic comment, thanks homie 🩷

spujb ,

This exposes how much popular misinformation there is about dietary science.

The fix to being skinny is never as simple as “eat more” in the same way the fix to being overweight is never as simple as “don’t eat.”

There are a whole bunch of psychological, physiological, and downright safety concerns that go into effectively dieting (yes if you just start starving yourself you can die). And on top of that, research has repeatedly demonstrated that fat/skinny shaming just makes people worse off than they were.

I encourage folks to have the openmindedness to understand that if things were really this easy, no one would have weight concerns.

spujb , (edited )

The length of your comment explicitly shows how such a process is not “simply eat.” With peace and love you contradict yourself from the get go :) It’s quite a task.

But! Thank you for taking the time to express this. I think you can allow yourself a certain sense of accomplishment for being able to pull that off and it’s very powerful of you to be willing to share with others. I just do think the “it’s simple” narrative is more harmful than it is welcoming to those who need it most.

spujb ,

Not easy, but simple.

Word for word quote from the person I am replying to. Weight management is hard. You are a troll. You bring nothing to the conversation. Leave me alone.

spujb ,

“Boils down” in the same way that a days long cross country road trip boils down to putting lots of gas in your car.

Yes, fuel technically is the main physical component involved in moving mass across distance, but there are myriad other hurdles and points of failure involved such as driver health, sleep, food and navigation.

spujb ,

You are both correct. There’s this strange and false assumption that people struggling with weight somehow don’t know this though.

They are incredibly aware. When people ask for advice, comments like OOP’s “eat more” are preaching to the choir.

It’s as aggravating and obvious as “I need advice for a long drive?”—“well make sure you put gas in the car.” Like, duh.

spujb ,

Not a doctor nor dietitian—Protein-Energy Undernutrition is what can bring this about. More or less it’s a deficiency of macronutrients, even though there is technically enough energy in the form of fat, which leads to potentially life threatening conditions.

spujb ,

VERY important to note that he did this while in close communication with a doctor, consuming vitamins and other essential nutrients. No one should try to do this alone.

spujb ,

only works on purpose built “Copilot” devices and looks to be disabled by default

definitely funky but not as bad as other AI moves that users didn’t get to chose whether it showed up

here i did the numbers 0-9

planes crash every day

in 2021 there were 21 commercial* plane crashes, zero fatal.

https://lemmy.cafe/pictrs/image/52f76a87-9789-4b0f-bf75-346186ac08fe.webp

*couldn’t find data including non-commercial flights. i welcome corrections citing such data :)

edit: i think i am wrong, see roscoe’s comment below

spujb ,

This one caught me off guard:

As of October, the FRA has recorded 742 incident reports for train derailments in 2023. Additionally, railroads reported 59 collisions, 12 fires, and 138 highway-rail-crossing incidents, which could include cars or any other vehicles or people at the crossing site.

Since 1975, an average of 2,808 trains have derailed each year, with a peak of 9,400 derailments in 1978.

spujb ,
spujb ,

That’s a fair assumption as a non industry expert. Nevertheless OOP was technically correct there. 😅

spujb ,

still no plane crash every day tho lol

i couldn’t find data including non-commercial crashes. i welcome corrections.

spujb ,

358 deaths due to crashes*, not the same as crashes themselves as multiple can die per crash

i came into this conversation with a light (pedantic) heart and an open mind. i am still willing to he corrected but cussing me out does nothing buddy.

spujb ,

word up homie no hard feelings 😭 ppl get so mean on here sometimes it’s refreshing to see someone back down

have a lovely morning sailor ☕️ ☀️

spujb ,

Sigh.

I always get downvoted for these takes but…

Your favorite YouTubers don’t do it for free. They need to eat too.

And sure, absolutely call out shoddy business practices from Google in other areas, call out invasive ads and tracking. Call out their monopoly and all their other abuses!

But this? This is just marketing, and marketing that you are quite free to ignore at that. Is it weird? Sure. But is it dystopian? Hell naw. It’s about creating the funding that allows your content creators to feed themselves.

I am begging you to post stuff like this to !mildlyinfuriating instead. This is just depressing.

spujb ,

First paragraph is news to me genuinely :0 I thought that was obvious I guess

Without knowing more about the virtual shinies I guess I can’t give a full opinion, so fair. In my head I was comparing them to the “subscriber for 18 months” badges YT and Twitch give you, which aren’t all that destructive.

spujb ,

yeah that’s… interesting

maybe not dystopic still but idk how thats even getting any ROI lol

spujb ,

“it’s nothing new”/“why are we so surprised” has got to be my least favorite genre of internet comment

because how dare corruption be confronted with proportionate disdain in its time— no, we have to feel and act self important about it all

(no hate to you individually, commenter bc maybe you aren’t aware you are doing this. just a sad trend i have noticed, at the best is unkind and at worst normalizes the status quo)

spujb OP ,

honestly might just change the and to or

should fix it 👍 ty

spujb OP ,

change made!

spujb OP ,

I have also seen temp bans put in for users abusing the report feature to win arguments

spujb OP ,

It’s probably not so much an oversight as a natural consequence of the open nature of Lemmy. Same reason DMs on here are not technically private. Even if you implemented an anonymous report feature, instance admins could probably identify the user easily.

spujb OP ,

Some instances allow a poster to see exactly who downvoted them.

Source or example? 😧 This is new to me.

Encouraging downvotes was a suggestion from the mods, but I will take this into account.

spujb OP ,

I would push back and say that if something is already so bad it’s worth reporting, it’s not weaponization to also simply downvote.

Unless you were already weaponizing the report feature which is pretty much not a good thing lol.

spujb OP ,

I think the key is to take whatever space is necessary not to make the problem worse for mods. None of those verbs are requirements but rather suggestions to improve the quality of your report.

I welcome any changes to the language to make that more clear though for sure. 👍

spujb OP ,

Yeah I agree, I think that you might be just applying your correct opinion to the wrong conversation 👍

spujb OP ,

Thanks for the example.

Kbin users seeing who downvotes their posts is potentially an issue, but I don’t want to discourage downvoting bad or harmful content for just that reason. The end goal is that bad content gets removed and offending users acted on. So if a Kbin user is abusing the system to harrass or abuse, they should likewise reported and banned.

spujb OP ,

there is no rule 5 dawg

spujb OP ,

make better jokes imho 😛

spujb OP ,

Ooh thanks for the step by step. I was able to identify the one kbin user who downvoted me over the past 24 hours. 😜

Yeah, given this I won’t recommend that kbin users downvote just anything since the platform doesn’t protect their privacy. Lemmy users should be good tho. Thanks! 😊

spujb OP ,

who on earth said terrorism? bwahaha

spujb OP ,

i don’t know dawg im just presenting the info the mods gave me 😭

spujb OP ,

Looks up ur modlog.

Repeated warning comment removals before finally being banned for repeated violations

Pardon me for not feeling much sympathy friend.
