I guess I’m lucky. I must subscribe to more or less of an echo chamber. Fuck trolls.

At a press conference, Mayor Federico Gutiérrez said that he would be signing two decrees: one, prohibiting sex work in the area of Medellín for six months, and another, the enforcement of a 1 a.m. closing time for bars in the area for a month.

So now people will not be able to make a living because of this scumbag. Were I a sex-worker in the area, I’d be pretty pissed off. I don’t know a better way to address this, I’m just saying that this is why we can’t have nice things.

This is a pretty stupid purchase. Beeper was based upon exploiting holes in the iMessage protocol. It was never going last. Why someone would pay for it after they closed the service is a mystery. I’m also not able to see the article due to paywall, so maybe there’s some great justification of which I’m unaware.

some_guy ,

Thanks!

“There’s basically no open standard for chat, and our vision is to create that by connecting to legacy chat networks,” Migicovsky said in an interview.

Why you’d pay so much for a company that doesn’t have massively proven tech is beyond me.

First boisterous laugh of the day. Thanks!

some_guy ,

There was a great photo of a guy who bought into the Mayan calendar bullshit in 2012 (I think?). He’d given away or sold his home and all his stuff. In the photo, he was checking his watch while young people next to him were laughing. I imagine his life was ruined.

But some cults just keep pushing the date back. See Millerites in USA:

Take a society with no mental health assistance and then pepper it with tons of religious fervor. It’s a recipe for disaster.

I’m in the middle of the first episode of the third season of the podcast Long Shadow. This one is going to be about mass shootings. Looks like they haven’t added it to their website yet, but both of the prior seasons were excellent so I expect this to be more of the same.

Future me is way more productive than I am. But every time I get to the future he’s gone and it’s just me saying, “fuck it.”

Serves no interest to the public who pays for these bodycams. Yeah right.

First out-loud laugh of the day, even if it was pretty minor. Thanks!

some_guy ,

No, I just credit the first out-loud laugh or boisterous laugh of the day on a pretty regular basis. I’ve been on Lemmy half my morning without it happening so far.

some_guy ,

Phil is fucked. Can’t say I mind that much. Dude is an asshole.

some_guy ,

I mean, people who believe in mythology (apologies to non-lunatic religious people, but these ones believe the earth is 5000yo) are primed to split their minds and ignore facts and contradictions. Perfect audience.

some_guy ,

I’m loving CK3 right now.

I’ve been playing Norse for a while. Just switched back to the Ireland campaign. I’m pretty new to the game and still learning how to effectively retain control after succession.

I started on xbox, which strips out a lot of granularity and only picked up the full version on a kbd/mouse device about a month ago. Reading game tips made me aware of mechanics that xbox lacked. I haven’t lasted more than several generations because I still learn from mistakes and start over. I’m getting there. Great game.

How does the day-to-day work of not wearing shoes in the house?

I have been reading a lot lately about not wearing outside shoes in the house and it interests me even more because I’ve been saving to re-carpet my whole house. It hits me every now and then about how to do things though, like, say I’m cooking all day on Sunday then need to take the trash out. I’m assuming it’s change...

some_guy ,

I wear moccasins indoors. My partner wears slippers. All shoes are at the door either on the floor (under a slim table for keys and accessories) or in a shoe rack (for her shoes; I only have three pairs).

Nick Heer wrote intelligently about this.

some_guy ,

Interesting take. You’ve certainly got me thinking about it a bit more.

I won’t try to interpret the author’s intent because that’s for him to do and I don’t want to speak on his behalf. But I do think he’s right about the tone of the response to the error being wildly wrong. News orgs should be dispassionate and I don’t get a sense that they were at all.

I think Meta fucks up. I think mass media is terrible at understanding what they’re reporting about. I think conservatives in particular see boogie men everywhere. Anyway, I’d read Nick’s piece earlier in the day and that had been my only exposure to the story, so I chose to link to it because to me it was a reasonable response.

some_guy ,

Well I’ll be damned. I will start trying this more.

some_guy ,

So much of the community was there – police officers, a motorcycle group, judges, EMS workers, nurses – to show their support. Numerous businesses – the list is long, and it keeps growing – brought checks or pledged money to help. Others have donated clothes for Emouree and brought food.

@Fredselfish is right about race being the reason.

some_guy ,

I’m tired of feel-good stories about the community pitching in to help someone overcome the bleakness of capitalism during a time of need. This shouldn’t be necessary.

some_guy ,

Only on the kitchen counter where I can see them from the sofa (open kitchen design). The kitties know they aren’t allowed up there and only on extremely rare occasions openly violate the rule (like, you know how sometimes they just forget that you’re standing there and act like you’re not?). The candles are also the type that come in a metal tin that can be closed when not in use, so they’re wide and squat.

some_guy ,

Off topic, but maybe someone will appreciate this. I wrote a function to get the size of contents of a dir a while back. It has a couple of dependencies (gc, gwc at a glance), but should be fairly portable (correct paths for your system). The results are sorted from greatest to least as shown in the screenshot. The purpose was to be able to see directory sizes, which is the topic of this post, so I figured I’d share.

Hope it’s useful to someone. Free to modify as desired.

All right, shut it down. @ArugulaZ has officially won.

That sucks. Teachers are one of the professions treated the worst by our society. Losing any that are qualified and aren’t bad people / bad at their job is a terrible loss.

Seems like time-shifting (VCRs, Tivo) is protected, but I agree with advice to consult a lawyer.
