When studying the Viking Age, one decision that needs to be made is how to relate to the sagas. Are they historical sources and can be used? Or are they literature and can't be used? Usually, my students land on the side of yes, despite all their problems, the sagas can be used. But this time around, through critical analysis, my students declared that the sagas can't be used. This is great. But, this also means that the students have declared one of our textbooks useless.

I'm right there with you!

I'm currently working on a paper for which I have to work a lot with sagas. As I don't have anything else, I jind of do have to work with them to some extent, but you quickly recognise how much the lives of Snorri or Sturla influence the texts. That's what makes it so difficult to evaluate.

My biggest issue, however, is the incredibly inconsistent editorial landscape, which is almost impossible to keep track of.

During my semester abroad in Canada, we read Nietzsche's Genealogie der Moral (iirc) in English, which was confusing to many, as the translator did not elaborate the crucial semantic derivation of Schuld from schulden (again, iirc) - which is totally lost in English (debt/to owe).

Almost as confusing as commonly pronouncing [Hannah] Arendt like Ayn Rand. Took me a couple of weeks to figure that out. That was really odd.

Pünktlich zum Jahresende ist nun auch Band 41 des Jahrbuchs für Regionalgeschichte erschienen. Der erste, den ich redaktionell zum Druck begleiten durfte.

Neben drei Aufsätzen gibt es wieder eine Fülle an Rezensionen - darunter sehr zu meiner Freude auch eine Besprechung meiner Dissertation durch Vivien Etting, die wichtigste Burgenforscherin in Dänemark.

TIL: Anlässlich des Besuch König Wilhelms I. in wurde im Herbst 1868 auf der Möweninsel in der Schlei eine hölzerne Burg errichtet.

Auf der Möweninsel stand einst die Juriansborg (oder Jürgensburg), die erste Residenz der Herzöge zu Schleswig und quasi-Vorgänger |s. Heute liegt sie unter eine Schicht von etwa 50cm Möwenkot begraben.

Norddeutscher wird's nicht mehr.

Ja, ich muss es definitiv schon einmal gelesen, aber nicht verarbeitet haben - auch weil ich erst seit einigen Monaten mehr Interesse am Nachleben der Burg habe.

Und so ist die nächste Idee für ein kleines Forschungsvorhaben geboren

Neuerscheinung:

im letzten Sommer kamen Kollegen der Uni Flensburg auf mich zu. Im Rahmen eines DFG- Projekts haben sie ein Kulturdenkmal namens "Alte Burg" bei Flensburg untersucht. Man fand jedoch nur Spuren der Urgeschichte.

Ich kannte die Flur aus meiner Dissertation und machte mich auf die Suche nach dem Ursprung des Kulturdenkmals - und fand diese in den heimathistorischen Netzwerken der frühen Nachkriegszeit.
