Middle aged Progressive; Formerly @roknrolzombie at the bird app. I enjoy science and music - not in than order. I complain a lot.

Alt-text for profile pic: me, a middle aged white hippy sporting a beard and top hat. I don't look irritating.

Note: Frequently does not know when to stop talking. "Shut up" is slightly less polite than "You can stop talking now", but both work just fine.

@actuallyautistic Holding long term, and sometimes irrational grudges which are hard to shift. Is this more likely for autistic folks?
Example: I have never forgiven Disney for turning a well loved, quirky, gentle, humerous and very english 'Winnie-the-Pooh' into some alien, creepy old man character in their early movies. Today I refuse to buy Disney themed items for my granddaughter because of that childhood upset. I still feel upset thinking about it today! It was as if they had murdered him.

@kkffoo @actuallyautistic I carry a grudge like it's an Olympic sport.

I'm fond of saying, "There are 8 billion people on this planet, most of which haven't even had a first chance to piss me off, but you want a second chance?"

One of the nuances that "responsible drinking" campaigns often miss is the reason why Autistic and otherwise neurodivergent people drink.

Autistic people don't necessarily drink with the goal of inebriation. Often, we drink to cope with the social environment. It acts as a social lubricant that makes it easier to talk and cope with the sensory bombardment that often happens in spaces where drinking is happening.

@ihazrabies @DivergentDumpsterPhoenix @actuallyautistic @autisticadvocacy @audhd I could use something like this for quitting smoking.

I've used it as a coping mechanism for such a long time - it's probably a huge part of my masking - that I'm finding the HABIT impossible to shift. The addiction? That's pretty much gone...don't feel like I need the nicotine. But I DO fee like I need a smoke. Like, ALL of the time.

edited to add: I'm currently using patches to help mitigate the nicotine issues...that's why I'm pretty sure it's not that.

@ihazrabies @DivergentDumpsterPhoenix @actuallyautistic @autisticadvocacy @audhd For real.

I've spent the last 8 years looking for a diagnosis (found one - heart disease) and in the intervening years I wasn't really able to work, so I spent a LOT of time just wasting time and smoking. I'm still not working, so now I have a ton of extra time at home and literally everywhere outside is a 'trigger' at this point...a reminder that I would really like to smoke one.

sigh

The end of the world cannot come fast enough lol

I myself have had strong acid reflux since my mid twenties.

@JeremyMallin @actuallyautistic Well, i discovered later in life that i have food allergies. Also, in an effort to maintain better health i've stopped eating 'as much' junk food...i still eat it, but more moderately. Most of my gastro issues have since disappered.

I cannot speak for anyone else.

Does anyone else think it’s messed up that a lot of what are considered ‘socially inappropriate’ behaviours are just traits of being Autistic?

If you’re too straightforward, you’re rude.

If you’re too passionate, you’re dramatic.

If you’re too quiet, you’re not a team player.

The list goes on.

@AutisticAdam @actuallyautistic I think if I think about that sort of thing too much I start to get a persecution complex.

What does Autistic Masking/Camoflaging mean to YOU?

Not what the definition is. Not what people on social media say. We say that all humans are different. Masking fits into that too.

Some of us can’t mask btw.

What is it to YOU?

@theautisticcoach @actuallyautistic Its the difference between getting a job and keeping a job. The difference between making a friend and keeping a friend.

It is an absolute necessity, even if the people around me know that I'm autistic.

Why? Because I am one seriously fucking annoying individual.

@roknrol@neurodiversity-in.au avatar

@jeanoappleseed @theautisticcoach @actuallyautistic Yeah, fomo drives a lot of my extracurricular activities. Dont get me started on the after work bullshit that makes you think you'll lose your job if you dont go out and pretend to enjoy the company of people they have to pay you to be around the rest of the time.

"Greta Thunberg Could Face Jail Term After Second Blockade of Swedish Oil Port"

"The Swedish climate activist has been charged for a second time for failing to obey police orders."

(See the linked article at the bottom.)

Something I posted somewhere else:

Greta’s perceptive way of seeing the world in very literal, stark terms allows her to clearly see the climate crisis as an emergency, while so many others view climate change as an abstraction. To her it’s not an abstract threat, it’s an evident reality. That’s why she said this:

"Adults keep saying: “We owe it to the young people to give them hope.” But I don’t want your hope. I don’t want you to be hopeful. I want you to panic. I want you to feel the fear I feel every day. And then I want you to act. I want you to act as you would in a crisis. I want you to act as if the house is on fire. Because it is."

And she’s right. She began her activism all alone, sitting in front of the Swedish Parliament building holding a sign, while refusing to go to school. She thought school was impossible to attend while the planet was burning. She needed to voice this massive threat to young people. She began the school strike that grew to include other young people.

Yes, she is a hero.

@obrerx @Riduidel @actuallyautistic I criticize everything that I have a problem with. Other than that, I agree with you.

A cursory glance at history though, shows us that nothing really changes. Ever. I'm not gonna hold my breath.

@obrerx @Riduidel @actuallyautistic Oh I absolutely agree with you. Good people tend to support other good people, after all. I don't think Thoreau would have decried Greta, but I also don't think he would be surprised if nothing much really happened from it.

And I mean, the reality is that a lot HAS happened because of Greta, a lot of good. That's it's not enough is not her fault...it's a nature of our species to prefer dealing with repercussions than to avoid them to begin with.

Do my comrades see themselves fundamentally as happy people who are sometimes/often sad, or sad people who are sometimes/often happy?

@actuallyautistic @actuallyautistics

roknrol ,
@roknrol@neurodiversity-in.au avatar

@theautisticcoach @actuallyautistic @actuallyautistics I am sometimes/often angry, and generally disappointed. Does that count?

I more or less see my existence as marching from point A to point Z where everything from B to Y is more effort than it's worth.
