In praise of libgen

Let’s just all stop and appreciate that libgen is a thing in the internet. It has saved me so much money with very overpriced math textbooks during college when my family was low-income. It contains virtually all the books, and even obscure ones. It provides low barriers to entry for knowledge for people wanting to advance...

Yes. I combine libgen with Anna’s Archive and Z-Library and there’s very, very little I can’t find.

Combine that with KOReader and this is pure bliss.

I’m not completely sure. Sometimes I find stuff in one site I don’t find in any of the other two. Also, I don’t know how often catalogues are synced.

I like it a lot, but sometimes I feel he’s going to get eaten alive by the character he’s created. He should tone it down a notch sometimes.

IRC still rules. No ads in my irssi.

If you mean that in some channels only some people can actually “talk”, I think it depends on the configuration of the channel, but it’s a possibility.

I thought people used Discord because you could have video / audio chats (not sure about this, I’ve used it very sparsely.)

And then there are Open Source projects that use Discord as the documentation repository. Hell is a place on the Internet, apparently.

You’re right, I completely misinterpreted the comment. The thing is that “voice” is a very specific term within IRC, and I got confused :D

Damn, I was used to work around shitty stuff on Teams. Are you telling me they’re going to push another, different set of bugs on me now?

What has been your involvement with Reddit as a user so far? I’m trying to understand what users are getting those offers.

Some people have already commented how to find it.

However, on a tangential note: last I heard, they stopped adding new papers due to a trial in India, but I never found out the outcome of that. Anyone has news about this, or did I dream it?

I created my account in Spain around 2009, moved to Canada in 2014 and came back to Spain late last year. Never had a problem with this :-?

The way it’s written fits very well with the madness that’s AWS, though.

Yes. And on Microsoft Teams that triggers a chat call.

I got a Nook in 2011 and it was my main reader device until it died a few months ago. I replaced it with a Kobo and I’m quite happy. Having backlight is a huge improvement.

How do you decide when to give up on a book?

I read The 7 1/2 Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle, and take enjoyed it. Read another book, then started reading Devil and the Dark Water by the same author. I got about 25% through and just decided to drop it for something else. I’m not an avid reader so i never know if I should stay committed or not.

I don’t typically give up. I mostly read non-fiction, so I always wait to see if there’s something for me past page 200.

I gave up on “Foucault’s Pendulum”. I started it as a teenager and obviously it was way above my league. I still want to pick it up again at some point in the future.

I also passed on “Postmodernism, or, the Cultural Logic of Late Capitalism”, because I couldn’t even understand the introduction.
