The word libertarian was used to mean something more leftist before that term was claimed by the modern America right wing libertarian movement, but that movement was never anything but a catspaw for right wing oligarchs.

This is so bizarre, why repeatedly go after him for what was obviously just an awful accident?

I was on Mastodon starting soon after Musk bought twitter, and bluesky few the last few months. Mastodon is a lot more similar to lemmy in terms of being part of the fediverse, while bluesky sort of claims to be going for a federated thing of its own but so far is pretty much just a centralized server like twitter so far. Perhaps because of that, I find bluesky a lot more engaging and more similar to pre-Musk twitter. A lot of the choices the Mastodon creators implemented were deliberately reducing virality and “one big chatroom” feel that I at least liked about twitter. I wasn’t looking for those changes, just a microblogging social network not owned by fascists.

So basically if you want something like lemmy go with Mastodon, if you want something old twitter go with bluesky.

Fingers crossed Republican isolationism spreads from their opposition to one of America’s few unambiguously morally justified foreign interventions in Ukraine to opposing the usual run of bloodthirsty imperialist interventions too. Not holding my breath though, their principle is “always support what does more harm” not isolationism

Haha I don’t think Musk is happy about articles describing how bad a job he’s doing.

psychothumbs OP ,

Yeah it’s definitely not a twitter only problem, the internet is getting so puritanical these days. Both Apple as you mention and payment processors using their influence inappropriately bear a lot of the blame.

It turned out to have no basis in reality - the person telling the story turned out to be the daughter of the Kuwaiti ambassador to the US or something like that.

psychothumbs OP ,

Yeah the only problem with bluesky is that it still has such strict limits on who can join, and even who can see the content. Can’t exactly make it your online home for announcements and such if most people can’t see them there even if they wanted to.

I assumed the piracy sub would be a safe space for this sort of thing

It came out yesterday. You are probably looking at the date on the screenshot of an article that it starts with rather than the date of this article at the top.

Good luck to the Palestinian freedom fighters! Apartheid must end!

War is hell, but few wars have ever been more justified than this one.

LibreOffice works at least as well as Word on its own terms, the problem is how Microsoft deliberately breaks interoperability so you can’t reliably share the documents you create on Libre with people who are going to open them with Word.

Word does not use odt

Huh I’m also a regular DDG user but I never have that experience.

psychothumbs OP ,

If that’s how you connect with a certain community it’s not a serious option to stop using that kind of social media without solving the collective action problem of getting that whole community to switch.

I’m over here on lemmy giving it a go, but it is a real challenge.

psychothumbs OP ,

Yeah I’m pretty much exclusively on DuckDuckGo these days, which is partially based on Bing but with a lot more privacy, and never really have any trouble.

I think shopping part of google search has the same problems as the rest of it just more so - there is a fundamental disconnect between searchers wanting neutral results and producers paying google to direct customers to their products. The more ability you have to control your search the less ability they have to sell highly ranked search results to advertisers.

Glad to see federal anti-discrimination law working to prevent these conference organizers from being as sexist as they wanted to be.

psychothumbs ,

Companies are definitely looking for applicants there, so it would definitely be discriminatory to ban men from it. That’s why it would be illegal to ban men:

“The nonprofit says it believes allyship from men is important and noted it cannot ban men from attending due to federal nondiscrimination protections in the US.”

Gender is indeed based on what an individual feels like. That’s a perfectly reasonable way to categorize people - it’s also for example what religion is based on. It’s just hard to implement systems where you give different rights to different genders when there’s no way to check what gender someone is besides asking them. Probably the best solution is to just treat people the same regardless of gender so nobody has an incentive to lie.

I can have sympathy for people desperate for jobs, and I can understand class warfare, and yet … once again something that women and enbys spent years and decades building up, is ruined because cishet men decided it was more ‘convenient’ for them to invite themselves into spaces not designed for them.

Couldn’t this same logic be used by men to justify not allowing women into the tech industry in the first place? If someone of the wrong gender being around counts as “ruining” then men could say “once again something that men spent years and decades building up, is ruined because women and enbys decided it was more ‘convenient’ for them to invite themselves into spaces not designed for them.” In fact I’d say something like that attitude really is what underlies a lot of tech industry sexism.

Gender-exclusive spaces often seem appealing to the favored gender, but they’re really not good for anybody.

I like it, seems like a good way to get to critical mass on the small subs here. Can’t really offer any help, but good luck and thanks!

Almost everything we think of as Greek innovations was actually the Greeks absorbing knowledge from the civilizations to their east. Greece is just when our records traditionally went back to.
