It will end up being like FreeVee on Prime for anyone who’s ever watched a movie or anything on there. They straight up randomly just inject ads in at random times, often not even during scene breaks. Characters are sometimes mid-sentence… Oh, and we’re back to the volume of the ads being 2x louder than the movie itself because I guess that law Congress passed way back in the day only applied to cable and broadcast TV.

It makes it nearly unwatchable. So get ready for that experience.

prole ,

No we don’t, we have 400+ years of capitalist history to tell us what comes next; Oligarchy, neo-feudalism…

People: Cory Doctorow didn’t invent this concept. Read a book.

prole ,

Oh great. Can’t wait for Sony or something to come in and completely ruin the IP with a movie or some shit.

prole ,

Man, the way that headline begins, I thought he had died.

On a macabre, but related, note: how long after Gabe’s death before Steam goes public and turns to shit? I’d give it 6 months.

prole ,

I don’t know what it is you want to distribute, but if it is newsworthy or political in nature, I think most media outlets (like “legit” ones like WaPo, NYT, etc.) have ways of contacting them through Tor for situations where the person with the information might have legitimate fears for their safety (e.g. whistleblowers).

But that’s really only for a certain type of “post.”

prole ,

I imagine the people who still run independent companies that fill vending machines (I’m not sure if this is still the model, or if capitalism ruined that as well) will gladly install the M&M branded machines, when the rental fees go down drastically.

At least that’s how I see this playing out: Machine is provided to small business for cheap (possibly free), majorly increasing their ever-thinning profit margins. I’m sure the cost of snacks increasing every month is a nightmare for people who stock vending machines, and their profit margins must be thinner than they’ve ever been.

They’ll install the new machines, and maybe even make marginally more total profits… of course the real money is in the data being collected by the machine.

Shit, I bet they could start having vending machines where they just give you shit for free, all you have to do is give a thumbprint, or strand of hair, or fingernail, or cornea scan, etc… And people would use them. Hey, free shit right?

I second EndeavourOS. My first distro and it’s been a great experience. I’ve felt no desire to switch.

Steam/games have worked great.

prole ,

Fair enough… It’s been nearly a month since I commented here so I don’t remember the exact situation, but if having a lot of updates was an issue, then yeah maybe not EndeavourOS. There may be LTS versions, but since it’s based on Arch, I’m not sure. I personally don’t mind it, and have yet to have a single issue with an update “breaking” something (though I have Timeshift set up to take a snapshot before updating just in case), but I guess

I could see someone being annoyed by having the little thing pop-up to tell you how many things you could update, but I kind of like it I think. It kinda feels like I’m very slowly, incrementally, making my laptop better, albeit usually in ways I can’t even perceive at the time.

But hey, everyone has their preferences. That’s why there’s a billion distros to choose from.

Afghan girls as young as 16 arrested in shops, classes and markets in Kabul by the Taliban, who labelled them ‘infidels’ for wearing ‘bad hijab’ (www.theguardian.com)

The girls – who were detained in shopping centres, classes and street markets – were accused of “spreading and encouraging others to wear a bad hijab” and wearing makeup....

Have you tried using reader mode in Firefox? Or did they fix that one? Still works for me on other sites like New York Times.

prole ,

You can do all of that with most basic file explorers. I use Dolphin on KDE. Change the view to “details” and right click the top and choose which metadata fields you want to show up. Then you can sort or filter using metadata.

prole ,

I switched my laptop EndeavorOS in 2023. Windows 11 was the last straw. Terrible OS.

prole ,

But regardless of what distro they use, they’re probably going to have to Google stuff every now and then. If they’re not ready for that, then maybe they’re not ready for Linux.

I switched a few months ago, and EndeavorOS is the only distro I’ve used and see no reason to switch. It’s been fantastic.

prole ,

My private tracker days are behind me after they shut down OiNK, and then later what.cd. Though I can’t say I don’t miss it sometimes. At its peak, What was an amazing place.

prole ,

Recently switched to Linux a couple months ago and can’t recommend EndeavorOS more. It’s great.

prole ,

Adaptive triggers begin as a hardware feature. Steam Deck can’t emulate that without changing the triggers out completely (if it’s possible at all).

I imagine the internal motors for the crazy precise haptic feedback is also hardware level.

prole ,

I wish more PlayStation games would allow use of motion controls. I’ve gotten used to enabling it with Steam Deck to actually make fps games playable for me on controller, then when I switch to ps5 and start tilting the controller for precise aiming and nothing happens…

Steam input, and their customization options for controllers on Steam Deck (or I guess in Steam in general) are incredible, and something I don’t see mentioned nearly enough.

prole ,

At this point it feels like Netanyahu has a checklist with 6 million boxes, and is checking them off as fast as possible so they can finally get even with Germany or something.

prole , (edited )

Yup, works just fine on my Steam Deck if anyone was wondering. Been years since I’ve played the game… The second one never pulled me in like the first.

Edit: Quick note if anyone is having issues, I switched ti GE-Proton before even starting it up for the first time and it worked so I never changed it.

prole ,

I think i may have forgotten to mention that I started out trying it with GE-Proton as I’ve had better luck in the past with brand new “unsupported” (per Steam) games, and it worked with GE-Proton.

prole ,

RoR soundtrack is incredible…

But I might have to go with Hotline Miami as the best. Or at least in the top 3 for me.

prole ,

I like the idea of this game (and series) a lot. I really have NO interest in a 2D side-scroller, though.

They were telling you that Risk of Rain 2 is almost identical to the first game, but it is a 3rd person shooter in full 3D, and not a 2D sidescroller. So the one issue you mentioned is no longer an issue.

At least that’s what I thought they meant.

prole ,

Ahhh ok, right. So it has nothing to do with being a 2D sidescroller. Why lie?

prole ,

Prima games… I always knew Brady Games had the better strategy guides!

“Retiring” and “resigning” are different things. He may have been near retirement age, but the statement he made makes it clear this was a resignation for a cause. With a good reason.

prole ,

So the letter was just for funsies? Seems like he was planning on retiring soon, and that date was moved up for reasons outlined in his letter.

prole ,

Same. Every time I’ve tried I just can’t get past the tutorial. Maybe if I take the other person’s advice and turn off enemies at first…

prole ,

FYI, I just switched to Linux few months ago from Windows and have been using Arch/EndeavorOS with KDE, and have had a wonderful experience.

I have a relative who’s been using Linux for years, and that’s the one they helped me install. I needed their help a handful of times the first couple of weeks, but since then I’ve been on my own and I love it.

Depends if you want bleeding edge or not. I don’t mind it, but I get update notifications like 3x a week.

prole ,

That’s kind of what they said though?

prole ,

Eh it’s really not that bad. I knew exactly what you were trying to convey, and didn’t even recognize any errors in the title until I saw that comment and reread it.

Regardless, you pluralized “streams,” when in that case it should just be “stream”. As a native English speaker, I don’t think I could explain the actual “rule” or whatever, it’s just automatic in my brain. In fact, I don’t even think I’m right that you “pluralized” it. I think you just added an ‘s’ so it changes the form or some shit… Man I don’t know.

So it would be like:

Does not stream

Or maybe something like:

No longer streams

If you want to keep the ‘s’.

prole ,

I think I’ve started learning that I’m kind of ok with that barrier to entry… I mean, it’s pretty fucking low. It’s not that difficult to understand if you are willing to take 5 mins to learn how it works.

Don’t want to be gatekeeper-y or anything, but maybe if you can’t pass that simple test, then the overall discourse is better off without you.

prole , (edited )

Oh hell yeah, three/four finger touchpad gestures. Been wondering why tf I can’t do that on my laptop.

Edit: ah 3d gestures. The little hand showed 3 fingers, so maybe it’s kind of implementing it in the background as part of that fix? Or maybe it’s already a thing in kde and I’m just dumb lol.

If anyone is running kde on a laptop, and is able to use more than 2 fingers at once for touchpad gestures, please let me know how.

prole ,

I’m on Wayland these days. I’ll keep that in mind though if I ever need to switch back to X for whatever reason.

prole ,

Tocuhpad worked fine with 3+ fingers when it was still running Windows (before I put Linux on it).

I’ll look into using KWin for this. As I said in the other reply, I’m using Wayland, so if that’s a feature from X, that could be why I can’t do it currently.

prole ,

I’ll look into it, thanks.

What is something (feature, modes, settings...) you would like to see become a standard in video games?

I’ve been thinking about making this thread for a few days. Sometimes, I play a game and it has some very basic features that are just not in every other game and I think to myself: Why is this not standard?! and I wanted to know what were yours....

prole ,

Maybe not everywhere, because then it wouldn’t be nearly as special, but I absolutely adored the “asynchronous multiplayer” aspects of Death Stranding.

Viewing the “strand contracts” tab and looking at how many other actual humans used and “liked” the infrastructure you created, or helped to create. Creating contracts with players who seem to appreciate your work, so that you see more of their structures, and they see more of yours. Only a couple examples. Trying to find the most optimal place for a bridge, or watchtower so that other players will appreciate it and give you “likes.” That nice feeling of warmth you get when you finish building a road that others had started…

Just the whole freaking thing fits so well into the “we’re all in this together, even if we’re (forcibly) isolated” message the game is conveying. Working together with real people that you will never directly see or speak to, in order to make an incredibly arduous journey a bit easier for all. Amazing.

At least I think that was one of the messages, Kojima can be cryptic at times lol.

Again, I wouldn’t want it to become the next “climb the tower to reveal part of the map” mechanic, and get ruined. You can’t just shoe-horn it in, it has to make sense in context.

prole ,

You should look into Steam Input (if you have a Steam Deck, you may have already messed with it), but it allows a mind-blowing amount of control customization for any game you’re launching through Steam. Most games will also have community presets you can easily use.

Inverting view or turning on gyro controls is trivial. It goes shockingly deep. You can create radial menus if you want, it’s wild.

prole ,

I had to get a plug-in to add click to play/pause so it’s like almost every streaming site. Also, I don’t believe there’s a way to get it to automatically play the next video file in the folder after one video finished, without making a playlist.

Small gripes, I know. I’m coming from MPC on Windows so I miss some of those features.

SmartTube - an advanced player for set-top boxes and tv running Android OS (github.com)

I’ve already been paying for YouTube Premium for many years to get rid of advertisement, and I’ve been using SponsorBlock for a year or so on my laptop to skip the inline ads, but because most of my watching of YouTube happens on the TV I always had to use the remote to skip it. It helps to see the “most rewind” area so...

prole ,

Sponsor Block (the Firefox extension) gives you a ton of customizability. You don’t have to have it auto skip, you can make it so a tiny bubble pops up asking if you want to skip or not. Or you can even just have it highlight it on the seek bar and nothing else.

You could still play most (if not all) ps2 games without a memory card. You can’t save your game obviously, but nothing stopping you from playing.
