It seems they are about to have their bubble burst. It’s probably the next wave of enshittification.

neptune ,

I’m more just talking about how the COOOL NEW THING attracts a lot of attention. Then an ungodly amount of investor money. And then dies. I don’t like podcasts and I don’t know a whole lot about their distribution, but the fact that they get funded like super bowl ads definitely means another shoe is about to drop.

neptune ,

Would be kind of a self own to get a new VP. No one does that. Unless she like killed someone Biden has to ride it out

neptune ,

Exception proves the rule. Garner campaigned against FDR.

What's the equivalent of physics constants for social studies?

In physics, it’s common to develop a formula and then stick a constant to explain the unknown. For example, Newton’s theory of gravity uses the gravitational constant G on the formula F = G * m_1 * m_2 / r^2, later on Einstein gave a more accurate explanation with the theory of relativity which does not rely on a constant E...

neptune ,

I think gravity and light work the same on psych majors as it does physics and engineering students…

I kid.

So in biology I know e the Euler number is important. It is used in growth equations (from finance to physics as well).

Statistics is fucking huge in every field. That is how you measure uncertainty. Bell curves and the Five Numbers and all that stuff is how you analysis thousands of widgets coming off an assembly line, or measurements in the social sciences field.

neptune ,

I think the idea is that in order for private companies to take the money, some of it has to go to HBCU as research contracts. Biden can’t just decided to tell a school to research some niche chip topic. The researchers leading the project have to hit a wall, and work with universities to research and solve it…

Yeah the article could explain way better. The big money for schools these days, besides grant money, is private partnerships. That’s what I think is going on here.

neptune ,

I’d love a nice freshly baked fingerprint stollen. In Dec at least.

neptune ,

Yeah I agree that there is a TAKE vs a SHARE.

Some of the reason cultural appropriation is a bad thing is due to capitalism. Taking something, even symbolically, for profit, is different than learning, experiencing and sharing.

neptune ,

This is a lot of philosophy. Pointless in the day to day. But the arguments and ideas eventually lead somewhere.

I do think the discussions of free will are important because it’s a major area that people take for granted. When you ask “what does free will really mean?” you can’t just come back from that.

neptune ,

Idk, doesn’t Frankenstein eventually want to end the life of his monster?

neptune ,

I don’t have kids. And I respect the Kids These Days perspective…

But aren’t you concerned about how quickly YouTube and Facebook are known to show new users radical content? Have you read studies about how social media may be related to unprecedented mental illness in kids?

Aren’t algorithms and social media at least a little different than books and television? Aren’t they razor focused on making us sad and addicted?

neptune ,

OK… Good parenthood doesn’t invalidate the idea that the modern internet is bad for some/many kids.

Smoking is bad for kids, even if you don’t let your kid smoke, smoking hurts the health of kids who do. Right?

neptune ,

If I post some links you will probably decide that they aren’t satisfactory. You could just look into it yourself, or perhaps provide the reason you don’t like those studies generally.

There is lots of research looking at mental health affects of social media.

neptune ,

Yes I’m being a little lazy, but I’m not a research scientist. Gooogling some thing like “mental illness social media” is pretty easy. There’s lots of studies finding at least a little corelation.

I’m not shocked your linked study says that there is very little evidence of social media causing mental health issues. I wouldn’t even be shocked if it’s true.

It still doesn’t mean that good parenting and social media access go hand in hand.

Just trying to have a conversation and not get a PhD in the process.

neptune ,

I’m not comparing it to smoking.

If someone’s response to “social media is bad for kids”, then to me “I keep my kids away from it, easy peasy” is not a response that invalidates the original argument. It actually supports the idea: social media is dangerous, therefore I intervene as a parent.

neptune ,

Scroll up and see what Southern Samurai said

neptune ,

OK, so what does what happens in one person’s family have to do with all children?

Again you might teach your kids to walk safely on the sidewalk, but if something changes and ten of thousands of kids just start walking off the sidewalk… Wouldn’t that be an issue worth considering?

neptune ,

If you must drink soda with your hamburger, Mcdonalds probably doesn’t feel like an awful deal. No one drinks soda anymore tho. You get a “free soda” with the “value” meal.

neptune ,

Part of me really wants to hate watch that anti woke action movie she promised everyone at the time.

neptune ,

If only the goal was to kill misinformation. No, I mean, the goal was to protect Disney’s reputation. “Cancelation” is capitalism.

neptune ,

I think it just means it’s over valuation started to end coinciding with the calendar year

Trump is not immune from prosecution in his 2020 election interference case, US appeals court says (apnews.com)

The ruling is significant not only for its stark repudiation of Trump’s novel immunity claims but also because it breathes life back into a landmark prosecution that had been effectively frozen for weeks as the court considered the appeal....

neptune ,

I mean as long as he accused the couple of voting illegally or something, sure, yes.

It’s illegal to get a tesla and not get a vanity tag with a EV joke on it

Needs a good bottom text: am I a joke to you

My favorite stage of Quora is when the monetized asking questions. Around this time I had too much time on my hands and showed up to help. When I realized I was making fractions of a penny, I turned to trolling the power users.

These guys were so insecure. They’d whine in their answers about how Quora should pay for good answers, not for questions that bring traffic. Nice try, but every tech bro is online and dying to give an opinion, so sorry, “good” answers is not worth paying for.

And when you would try to correct them or report their answers as incorrect they would lose their shit and try and report me 😂

Fun times. Like a dolphin watching a ship sink.

neptune ,

It’s not a “conspiracy” but rather it’s capitalism. Yes the employers have almost all the power. Without unions or laws to try to level out the power imbalance, the only solution is to keep getting new skills that will eventually make you valuable (as simply a college degree doesn’t cut it anymore). And yes it’s a race to the bottom.

neptune ,

Yes, stock is basically a loan to the company. Sure, if a company always new it was going to grow at a certain rate and life were guaranteed they could give everyone an exact raise…

Instead they say “here is a bonus, its built on a gamble. Here’s is monopoly money that might be worth 10% more in two years, or maybe the company will be bankrupt and you will be unemployed.”

Would it be better to get a cash bonus or a raise of similar value? Sure.

If True Crime Girlie’s can get their rocks off on some domestic violence turned murder, I think we can all gawk at a bunch of drugged up bros who watched too much football and froze to death in their unwitting friends backyard. Allegedly.

neptune ,

Young Adult Fiction might be a good starting point for you. Just to flex the reading muscles. I’d second Enders Game and it’s sequels for the scifi, and for being sort of YA. Once you get the habit going I bet you’ll be ready to just keep going.

neptune ,

We already have computers that can determine which sounds to cancel out. That’s pretty cool.

Sound isn’t going to be like a bullet or an electrical storm hitting the grid. I don’t think you can just make a material that blocks out sound when it reaches a certain level and allow it below the threshold. Definitely an interesting theory but I am not sure how it would be designed.

Israel’s campaign in Gaza ‘plausibly’ amounts to genocide, US court finds (www.theguardian.com)

A federal court in California has ruled that Israel’s military campaign in Gaza “plausibly” amounts to genocide, but dismissed a case aimed at stopping US military support for Israel as being outside the court’s jurisdiction....

neptune ,

“We didn’t say we were committing genocide, we said we were just killing everyone. Is that hard to understand?” 🤷

Mars is 1.52 AU from the sun, or 1.52x further than Earth, so the inverse square law says 43% less sun power. But the atmosphere is thinner and a different composition.

To know how the human eye actually operates on Mars, one would have to get a human eye to Mars.

A million dollar donation to any Democrat in a close race.

Yeah going to sleep drunk is stupid. If you have one drink while making dinner, one with dinner and one after dinner, and then go to sleep 2+ hours later, almost entirely sober, then this study has no bearing on that.

For me, even if I do binge drink a little later than is prudent, I’ll stay up a bit until I start sobering up. And I definitely feel way better than when I go to bed when my body is still processing a stomach fill of alcohol.

neptune ,

Maybe. Or it’s just Trump and Abbot conspiring ahead of the 2024 election and a bunch of morons are swept up in the propaganda

neptune ,

That’s not the point. If Joe the artist makes $25,000 a year breaking copyright, that doesn’t mean copyright is now meaningless.

neptune ,

Why not both?

Let’s say you hypothetically agree that the state should reserve the power to execute some people, in very very rare cases. Well cruel and unusual punishment is supposed to be unconstitutional. And all the chemical companies refuse to sell the injection chemical. And testing out new methods is obviously pretty cruel…

Focusing on the unpleasantness could actually get us closer to a place where effectively no capital punishment occurs due to these limiting factors. Without even getting the average American on board with the idea that executions should be banned entirely.

neptune ,

I can kind of see why there’s a purpose for punishing cigarette usage at schools. I don’t think vaping is harmless, but it’s not like vaping in the bathroom is causing an uncleanable mess or contributing to second hand smoke… I see why vaping is banned in schools but just like throw her vape away and stop there.

neptune ,

Yes but what if Lenin comes back from the dead and makes my kids gay?

neptune ,

It turns out the two party system is sort of like a hostage situation

neptune ,

That’s not really what people consider “stocks” but yes of a lot of economists and political theorists were able to debate the details of the policy people could decide and urge their reps to do the right thing. Worth a shot I guess.

neptune ,

Had to re read this a few times. Civilians are dying. The UN should stop it on humanitarian grounds. But hey, it’s the people calling it a genocide that need to be focused on. 🤔
