Edo — the ancient Japanese city now known as Tokyo — may have been one of the world's first large-scale ecological civilizations. From 1603 to 1868, as a result of the government's policy of not trading with outside nations, there was a scarcity of cotton and timber, which meant that everything was reused, repaired, repurposed or recycled. Traditional kimonos would become pyjamas, diapers, floor cloths and eventually fuel; candle wax drippings were remoulded, modular house design meant that floorboards could be reused; leftover straw from growing rice became sandals and rope. @CultureDesk @histodons Same in the Spanish autarchy of the 1940s. My mom, grandson of a rich man, "turned" her coat instead of buying a new one.
"Recycling" culture also involved grave stones were turned onto tables, old steam locomotives were thrashed to make metal utils, and nature was depredated.
Some children died while trying to "recycle" grenades, too.

@gnutelephony @DamienMarieAtHope Well, as a Spaniard, I just want to add that Catholics were not saints. They were somehow free from utilitarism, but that just meant instead of massively-killing natives, they put them to work until death. Yes, Spain made some humanitarian laws on natives, but Spaniards tend to make great laws they don't expect anybody to observe.
