One from the archives! What's your experience of pain as an Autistic person? Do doctors take you seriously?

When I first dislocated my shoulder at age 17, a friend drove me to a hospital where they re-seated it. They wouldn't believe that I'm not on drugs.

I had told them that we had been skating and they said "you skaters are always on something, come on!". So I always thought they said it out of stereotypical thinking.

But reflecting on it now, this might have been related to my pain tolerance.

@actuallyautistic How do y’all deal with people who say that autism doesn’t even exist, and that it “suddenly” cropped up over the past few generations because people have been “mentally coddled”? Somewhat in the same vein as “there is a diagnosis epidemic” but much more extreme.

I actually haven't heard that exact position from anyone before. But I've heard more general statements along the lines of "people are too concerned about their mental health nowadays and every little emotional injury is turned into a mental condition".

Honestly, I haven't had many of those discussions but one thing I learned from a physiotherapist: People used to not go see doctors when they had physical pain in the past. They were very good at suppressing

(2/2) ... pain. One cod say "they weren't coddled and didn't interpret any discomfort as a slipped disc". But those people had to feel the consequences later. A slipped disc is there, diagnosed or not. Delayed treatment could never achieve what early diagnosis and treatment can.

Same goes for high temperatures, long-lasting infections and so on. People who live "the old way" die earlier and suffer more.

If that argument doesn't resonate... 🫠

I realoze this gets dangerously close to positioning autism as an illness and I don't feel very cpmfortable woth that. I'll probably think this through a little more.

But talking to someone who thinks like that I'm also willing to live with it for the moment. If I feel that they are open for arguments, I'll go on and clarify next.

@actuallyautistic looking for non-rabid fans for discussions of both the classic and revival series

and by non-rabid, i mean people not on the “it’s gone woke”, “Jodi Whittaker destroyed the series”, etc. bandwagon

I find it interesting that people rarely discuss the change from Russel T. Davies to Steven Moffat as head writers. Or do they and I just didn't see it?

Davies left at the same time as Tennant and I always thought that this change had the biggest impact on how it went from there on. I'm also secretly a bit entertained when dudes complain about wokeness etc. given that Davies had a big impact on progressive TV. Now Davies is back :)
I haven't watched yet

Trivia: In the more recent Davies Miniseries "It's a Sin" there is a scene that plays on the set of Doctor Who (not labelled as such, I think).

He stated that it's a tribute to Dursley McLinden, an actor who played a part in the 1980s episode "Remembrance of the Daleks" and became an AIDS activist. Davies met him shortly before his death.

Is there a term in the autistic world for "outing" someone? In the gay world we have often very accurate "gaydar".

I was watching a mom and son on a television show. On one hand I want to talk about them and their interaction, but on the other hand I don't feel right about "diagnosing" them, particularly in a public way.

@darrellpf @actuallyautistic
Do you mean an autism-related equivalent to "gaydar" or to "outing someone"?

I don't have an answer to either, but I'm curious :)
Also you activated my internal new-word-inventor :blobwizard:

I have one now :) I quite like it. Not strictly autism-focused, obviously but maybe that's a good thing.

I'm not attached to it so if anyone has doubts about the term, feel free to let me know :)
