1 dead whistleblower is a tragedy. 10 dead whistleblowers are a statistic.

magic_lobster_party ,

It’s probably only because it’s co-designed by Teenage Engineering. Usually their devices get quite the fuzz.

magic_lobster_party ,

I guess the CTO saw you as a threat to his position.

magic_lobster_party ,

What is it you struggle most with? The type of questions? The time pressure? Anxiety?

magic_lobster_party ,

Yeah, those kind of questions are silly and don’t reflect problems that happen in real life.

My advice when you get a question similar to this is to have a pen and paper at hand. Draw a few easy examples and find a solve those systematically by hand. From there you go to harder and harder examples and adapt your system for those examples. Try to find examples where your system fails.

Once you’re confident you’ve found all corner cases you can start to write down the algorithm.

That’s the advice I can give. Hope it helps!

magic_lobster_party ,

When I think about it, what I just wrote is basically test driven development, but by hand on a piece of paper.

magic_lobster_party ,

You know this won’t happen, but I like your optimism

magic_lobster_party ,

I’m not going to commit suicide because of YouTube premium

magic_lobster_party ,

They want people to pay for premium. That’s why they’re pushing more ads. To make the free plan insufferable.

magic_lobster_party ,

Spotify also includes lyrics. It’s just not in free tier anymore.

One time I struggled debugging a program on a clean Windows machine. For some reason it seemed like it couldn’t find a JSON file that’s obviously in the system. I could even open the file on my own and view its contents.

Turns out after much frustration that the file was actually a json.txt file. I didn’t notice because the extension was hidden, so I only saw .json and thought it was fine.

magic_lobster_party ,

Hate to break it to you, but most users are that dumb.

magic_lobster_party ,

In this case I used notepad because it was a fresh Windows install on some VM.

magic_lobster_party ,

I’ve asked GPT4 to write specific Python programs, and more often than not it does a good job. And if the program is incorrect I can tell it about the error and it will often manage to fix it for me.

I engaged with one I matched on Tinder. We chatted for a few days. Once they started talking about helping me with cryptocurrency investments, I connected the dots and ended it there.

What made me take longer to realize is that we had a brief video call, where I could clearly see it was the same girl as the photos. But apparently this is a part of the scam.

So you’re not safe even after video chats anymore.

Internet archive turned themselves into an ebook piracy site rather than a digital library. They distributed unlimited copies of books for free. And then Internet Archive defended it with something in the lines of:

It costs a lot of money to make, and distribute, digital copies of books without the permission of the copyright holder... therefore it should be legal for The Internet Archive to do it.

magic_lobster_party , (edited )

Reading the article and I wonder what Internet Archive thought when they turned themselves into a Pirate Bay but for ebooks. They had this lawsuit coming and they have obviously no idea how to defend themselves in this case.

They should stick to archiving the web instead of shooting themselves in the foot.

magic_lobster_party ,

Saying the law is wrong is the worst defense you can have in court.

magic_lobster_party ,

In court you’re defending that you didn’t break the law. They have no such defense. You can’t just play Calvinball in court.

magic_lobster_party ,

I fully agree with that, but that’s not going to help Internet Archive

magic_lobster_party ,

The only change that will come out of this is that IA will pay a huge bill. They’re too small to even make a nudge to the copyright laws.

I just hope this pointless move won’t bring down the wayback machine.

magic_lobster_party , (edited )

Stir up the hornets nest by freely distributing copyrighted physical media. The only outcome is that they will get stung.

magic_lobster_party ,

How is distributing artist’s work freely without compensation or their permission helping them?

magic_lobster_party ,

Authors have the right to be compensated for their work. There are many things that are wrong with current copyright, but denying artists compensation for their work is not the way.

Wouldn’t you also be mad if your salary was denied?

magic_lobster_party ,

Great, then you agree that stealing is bad.

magic_lobster_party ,

Good thing I’m always carrying a screwdriver

magic_lobster_party ,

Angry Video Game Nerd. He made internet videos pre YouTube days about him playing bad retro games. I don’t know what he’s doing nowadays, but one thing for sure is that he’s not going to watch a movie.

magic_lobster_party ,

Most routers already have non-standard passwords by default. At least in EU. I’m not sure which devices besides routers and IoT peripherals are affected by this bill.

magic_lobster_party ,

It is said that Linux got the Penguin as a mascot because Linus got bitten by one at a zoo

magic_lobster_party ,

Hosting a streaming service is incredibly expensive. Especially at the scale of YouTube. I can imagine YouTube is costing far more for Google than Search itself.

My guess is that YouTube has never really been profitable, which is why they’re pushing users to buy Premium.

magic_lobster_party ,

We’re losing that in Sweden though. Public healthcare is becoming more and more under funded. Doctors barely have time to treat patients, so they’re often sending patients home with prescribed paracetamol.

The only way to get proper healthcare nowadays is through private healthcare, if you can afford it. I know many who haven’t gotten proper healthcare until they sought private healthcare. It sucks, because it used to be great.

magic_lobster_party ,

No I’m saying I want to go back to a public healthcare that doesn’t suck.

magic_lobster_party ,

Especially considering most fun innovations get scrapped either way.

magic_lobster_party ,

I believe it also is for creating hype among investors. “Look at this new amazing product lineup we got! Self driving cars! Invest in us before those huge things turn into reality!”

And to get on the more conspiratorial side, it might also be to dry up the market of talent. It’s hard for competitors to make a product if all talent is already doing cool stuff elsewhere.

Tesla’s in its flop era (www.theverge.com)

When Tesla releases its first quarter earnings this afternoon, the company’s CEO Elon Musk will field the usual questions about new products, new factories, and progress toward its futuristic vision of self-driving cars and robot workers. But Musk will also face increasingly urgent questions about its current state of affairs...

magic_lobster_party ,

It’s funny how so many were confident FSD really was safer than human drivers 10 years ago. Some even said it’s irresponsible not to let these self driving cars drive on the street.

magic_lobster_party ,

Always remember: when you invest in a stock, you can only lose what you’re putting in. When you short a stock, there’s no limit in how much you can lose. Yes, that means you can go in debt.

magic_lobster_party ,

Shorting is when you borrow stocks and then immediately sell it. At some point you have to buy those stocks back so you can return the stocks to the lender.

Say you short 1 stock at $1000. The stock later drops to $100. You have made a good $900 profit when you return the stock.

Say the stock instead goes to $10,000. You have made a devastating $9000 loss. You have lost more than you initially shorted.

They need the IP address to know where to forward the packet to. Hard to avoid that without VPN or TOR.

Brackeys is back, and will now make tutorials on Godot (www.youtube.com)

This is exciting news for every aspiring game developer! Brackeys, a popular YouTuber who used to make in-depth and very user-friendly tutorials about Unity, is returning after a long hiatus, and will now create tutorials on Godot (for those who don’t know, it’s a FOSS game engine, but I’m pretty sure that, if you have an...

magic_lobster_party ,

I just started thinking yesterday if I should start learning Godot. Maybe I should take this as a sign.

magic_lobster_party ,

Allegedly there are 2 million in waitlist for this thing

magic_lobster_party ,

Don’t forget Model Y steering wheels falling off as well.

magic_lobster_party ,

I like everything I’ve seen so far even if it’s a huge departure from the Ori games. Looking forward to it!
