Ukraine has no interest in a ceasefire that causes them to lose territory to the Russian invaders.

And rightfully so.

I have been running Linux for some time now,

Same. Windows 95 was the last MS install on my personal machine.

kent_eh , (edited )

it will just crash on you before you even find out

Older versions may have had issues with that, but I haven’t encountered any crashing in over 2 years. (And I i do 6 youtube videos per month with it)

Lightburn for controlling laser engravers.

It’s pretty much the only choice on Linux (though it is cross platform). Free 30 day trial, then ~$80 lifetime licence.

The other choice is LaserGRBL, which is open source, but doesn’t seem to have a Linux port for some reason. And it has a lot fewer features, with a more complex workflow.

kent_eh ,

What are they gonna do? Set up “settlements” in Ireland and Spain?

kent_eh ,

Part of me this at this point that Netanyahu is partially prolonging the war because he wants Democrats to be divided and Trump to win so he has an even friendlier US.

That also seems to be part of Putin’s plan.

kent_eh ,

if they own the major venues in every town

When you say “own” in this context, do you mean they actually bought the building, or just that they have an exclusive contract with the venue?

kent_eh ,

for most concert venues, you can show up in-person, buy them from a physical ticketing kiosk

Unless that show was “completely sold out” before the physical ticket office opened for business.

Navigation is not the biggest challenge with self driving.

Obstacle avoidance in an intelligent manner is the bigger problem to solve.

If you want people to trust your self driving solution, it has to be able to account for other vehicles, pedestrians, cyclists, wildlife, trains, fog, blowing snow, potholes, and a myriad of other things that can’t be predicted in advance nor be plotted on a map.

kent_eh ,

The US government has never been supportive of the ICC.

And has always been a strong supporter of Israel no matter what they are doing.

kent_eh ,

Call me old fashioned, but I still go to bricks-and-mortar stores to compare a few options when I’m making an important or expensive purchase.

Yes, that is getting increasingly difficult these days.

kent_eh ,

Hmm…wonder if this has anything to do with the settlements on them airing false election claims.

I have to assume Fox’s staff have had some pretty pointed training sessions from their corporate lawyers to try and prevent another costly lawsuit loss.

kent_eh ,

As long as he doesn’t super obviously foment violence then he’s not getting sued.

Fox doesn’t want to be dragged into that lawsuit for enabling Trump.

And they know that when he gets on one of his rants, it can go off the rails in all sorts of unpredictable (and legally risky) ways.

kent_eh ,

You’d think, as a lawyer himself, that Costello would know better than pissing off the judge.

I guess he’s just another in the long history of Trump hiring the worst lawyers.

kent_eh ,

he has a right to run for office.

The Republican party has allowed him to be their candidate for president.

They absolutely could choose to prevent him from having that role if they wanted to.

kent_eh , (edited )

Someone who is: Tough on Crime™, Fights for Liberty™, Cares for Children™, a Successful Business Man™, Fights Wokeness™, Highly Intelligent™, Protects Democracy™, and Fights for Christianity™, is what those on the right are made to believe Trump is.

Even though each and every one of those things is a provably blatant lie.

kent_eh , (edited )

He may be popular to some of them, but he’s also turned the party into a cult of personality that has abandoned most of what it used to claim to believe in.

When he dies (or loses his ability to attract a crowd), the party will be a husk of its former self. They’ll have abandoned their principles which attracted fiscal conservatives in the past, and won’t have their cult leader to rally around.

If Microsoft announces that this is going to be forcibly installed on all versions of Windows, then we can grab our pitchforks

Complaining when it is already released is too late to stop it.

kent_eh ,

menace me with a knife

Regardless, a knife isn’t any risk to innocent people across the street from the intended victim. A gun on the other hand…

kent_eh ,

Meanwhile the mis/dis-information campaigns continue to roll along at an ever accelerating speed around the world.

kent_eh ,

Trump and his allies are laying the groundwork to contest a potential loss

He did that in the run up to the 2016 (and 2020) election as well.

Trump has always claimed that if he doesn’t win it must be because someone (other than him) was cheating.

kent_eh ,

Kind of stands out to me more than the Canadian bit

After being in the US for 20 years, they can keep him.

kent_eh , (edited )

How arrogant of those American governers to assume they can just dictate how other countries deal with people smuggling weapons into their country (even if those people claim to have done it as a casual accident).

kent_eh ,

Being able to operate at expert level in one area of endeavor doesn’t guarantee that you will be at that same level in all things you do.

kent_eh ,

because hype is an ever moving goal post.

That’s it exactly.

Nothing ever lives up to its hype because the hype is setting unachievable expectations.

kent_eh ,

There were a bunch in my areas last school board elections as well.

Most lost by a large margin, but a couple actually got elected. Both have since been suspended by the boards they are on for violating multiple policies and governance oversight regulations.

kent_eh ,

Plus, it’s where the future national candidates typically get their first experience in elected office.

If you want better candidates in the future “big” elections, make sure to encourage the good ones and ensure the crap ones don’t get on school boards and other local elected positions.

kent_eh ,

I am constantly baffled how refusing to futute-proof the company meets the definition of “fiduciary responsibility”.

“Let’s spike today’s profits by destroying tomorrow’s profits” doesn’t seem very responsible to me.

kent_eh ,

My solution is to just watch less in general.

Not like there’s a ton of new stuff worth watching at any given time anyway.

That was one of the main factors in my cutting the cord in the first place.

kent_eh ,

perhaps deterrence being a goal of punishment isn’t all that effective.

It really isn’t. Most people who plan their crimes tend to have convinced themselves that their cunning plan means they won’t get caught.

And (at the other end of the criminal “mastermind” spectrum), crackheads who don’t plan their crimes are also not thinking about the possibility of getting caught.

And if you beleive you won’t be caught, the potential punishment is irrelevant to you.

kent_eh , (edited )

Prevention. Education.

Fixing the core societal issues that have been proven many times to reduce crime.

Poverty, addiction, hopelessness, desperation.

Obviously dealing with those on a societal level is not fast, easy or cheap, but it does actually work. Eventually.

kent_eh ,

Does the guilt lie with the police for the murder, or with the person that put him in the path of the cops?

Both is an acceptable (and accurate) answer.

Most situations aren’t entirely binary.

kent_eh ,

Maybe not totally different. Both discussions are about self-righteous people being assholes to others.

Microsoft is testing Game Pass ads on the Windows 11 Settings homepage (www.ghacks.net)

Microsoft’s announcement: “We are introducing a new Game Pass recommendation card on the Settings homepage. The Game Pass recommendation card on Settings Homepage will be shown to you if you actively play games on your PC. As a reminder – the Settings homepage will be shown only on the Home and Pro editions of Windows 11...

People like how Trump sounds certain and sure and strong,

He’s telling them whatever lie he thinks they want to hear.

And for reasons I can’t explain, far too many people are comforted by that blatant lie. Even when it contradicts the lie he told yesterday.

kent_eh ,

. I don’t doubt for a second he’s going to do away with trans protections on “day one”.

His bluster includes months worth of things he plans to do “on day one”.

But, if he actually manages to get elected, his highest priority is going to be trying to pardon himself, despite that probably not being possible. Trying to cover his own sorry ass will absorb most of his attention for many months.

Of course, he first has to get elected.

kent_eh ,

Gaza should not be nuked.

I’ll even be so bold as to say nobody should be nuked.

kent_eh ,

Is actively being thwarted by Republicans at every turn.

Plus, things take time to happen, even under ideal circumstances.

kent_eh ,

If your happy with Biden you’ve given up.

Given that either Biden or Trump will be the president after the next election, voting for the obviously less harmful one is still a positive move.

Not voting only gives the votes of Trump’s insane clown cult more power.

kent_eh ,

It’s like half of the general population supports him, and the other half supports Biden.

Less than a quarter support Trump.

The bigger problem is that almost thalf of the population doesn’t vote at all.

kent_eh ,

“it’s tradition” isn’t much of an explanation

It’s not a moral answer, but it is an accurate answer.

kent_eh ,

He also said he did not do anything wrong and planned to appeal his conviction.

That’s a pretty common thing for people in prison to say.

kent_eh ,

It does also show Russia that Ukraine is capable of bypassing their defenses and successfully attacking infrastructure (or military installations/encampments) several hundred kilometers inside Russia.

And doing it multiple times.

kent_eh ,

Cars are far from the only product that is actively destroying individual privacy in the name of corporate profits

Reducing the number of cars doesn’t fix the root problem.

Google is laying off more employees and hiring for their roles outside of the U.S.

That is the double edge sword of remote work: if your job can be done from anywhere, it can be done by someone else in another country where wages are lower.

kent_eh ,

If I can do my job entirely from the comfort of my own living room, there’s nothing that would prevent the company from hiring someone to do my job from the comfort of their own living room, in India or the Philippines."

That’s one of the reasons I went into a field of technology where the work is mostly hands-on.

Hardware maintenence, troubleshooting, installation and repair isn’t something that can effectively be done remotely.
