Wouldn’t it be better to integrate with the existing federated video hosting service? (PeerTube) so basically host videos in PeerTube, link to Lemmy, make the Lemmy UI parse it as a video with a custom player

With LibreTube that’s only partially true. It doesn’t sync with YouTube, but LibreTube on Android will sync with your favorite Piped instance on desktop, so if you also browse YouTube on desktop using Piped, you’ll get that experience of a synced subscriptions list. You can use Google Takeout to easily migrate from the main YouTube to Piped with all your subscriptions active.

With NewPipe you’re correct - there’s no sync. You can import from Google, but there’s no mechanism to sync with a desktop version.

When I was a teenager, I’d probably change my ROM 3 times a day. Spent more time in the recovery mode than using my phones.

As a working adult… I wouldn’t even know the names of any modern custom ROMs.

    Ignore ReVanced, go for LibreTube. It uses Piped in the backend to access YouTube, and it’s got a really nice user interface on Android.

    It also automatically blocks ads, skips sponsored segments, supports downloads, PiP, background playing, subscriptions, comments, live videos.

    It doesn’t rely on shady alternative G services running in the background, doesn’t need you to modify any official APKs, it’s open source, and you can customize elements you want or do not want to see from YouTube. Give it a go.

    EDIT: And here are some bonuses it’s got over alternatives: customizable sleep timers, channel groups, subscriptions synced automatically with your desktop browser (via Piped), the ability to proxy and reroute your traffic to YouTube, full Shorts support, live comments for broadcasts.

    Top level domains are a significant source of revenue. As the “.ml” gets used more often due to “machine learning” of course the government will try and explore this further.

    Ah wow, what a weird regional lock. Is there any explanation for this? I can unlock my S23 here in Brazil just fine, and the hardware is supposedly the same regardless of region this time around.

    Burn in can’t be repaired, unfortunately. It’s not a defect, its the literal organic compounds making up the subpixels decaying into other simpler compounds.

    I really feel like the new rule regarding batteries will mean manufacturers locking down the bootloader.

    They are already terrible with software updates, but you can get by with custom ROMs. The official software also usually is got background services that are designed to limit performance.

    Bur if they lock the bootloader… Your battery could be great, but all your apps could stop working because your OS is outdated.
