    There are hardly any alternatives for people who don’t have the time to self-host and setup everything.

    “Oh but Firefox!” the tools that Mozilla provides are indeed good - but there’s no Mozilla Photos, Mozilla Notes, Mozilla Assistant, and so on.

    “Oh but Microsoft!” and why would that be better than Google?

    “Oh but mix Firefox with Proton and this specific GitHub project for photo management and this FOSS notes apps with a Docker backend for sync and thi-” I wish I had the time to do that, truly, I actually prefer many of the FOSS alternatives I’ve seen lately. I do not have the time nor hardware to do this correctly.

    and avoid regulation

    They will succeed for about 10 years and then the European Union will add profound regulations. Followed by Brazil implementing a light version of 1/3 of the EU’s regulations. Followed by the US doing absolutely nothing because regulations are for commies or something.

    I had a moment where I believed I was colorblind because I was toying around with iOS accessibility settings and one of the colour filters looked exactly the same enabled as disabled when I tested it. Good times.

    Not colorblind.

    kadu , to android in The Galaxy Watch 6 series marks a return to form for Samsung
    @kadu@lemmy.world avatar

    The 2GB of RAM could be transformative. I love my Watch 5, but the main complaint I have is even if all you’re doing is using one app and the home screen, it really struggles with smoothness in transitions and responsiveness. A doubling in RAM could be what it takes to improve it.

    kadu , to android in Android 4.4 KitKat is truly dead, loses Play Services support
    @kadu@lemmy.world avatar

    From my experience, those aren’t users determined to use outdated smartphones.

    These are the super shady cheapo TV boxes that are essentially an underpowered SoC + Android 4.4 + a launcher. Or many Chinese handheld gaming devices.

    Users probably do not stick around with 4.4 given how many important apps would not work.

    kadu , to technology in EU passes law to blanket highways with fast EV chargers by end of 2025
    @kadu@lemmy.world avatar

    Well, the true solution is robust public infrastructure and abandoning personal cars.

    But then people freak out and reject any proposal because cars are beyond a fetish at this point. Which leaves either migrating to electric cars and trying to improve the battery technologies, or keep burning fossil fuels as if we aren’t at the brink of collapse.

    kadu , to nostupidquestions in Do people just not use the YouTube subscription feed?
    @kadu@lemmy.world avatar

    When the home page defaulted to the recommended view rather than subscriptions, many years ago, I simply saved the URL for the subscription feed as a favorite and that’s it. I never had issues, all videos from all my subscriptions show up.

    kadu , to technology in TikTok is adding support for text posts
    @kadu@lemmy.world avatar

    Social media platforms (and most modern entertainment, really) fight for your time.

    If you’re scrolling Twitter you’re not on TikTok. If you’re playing the Nintendo Switch you’re not on TikTok. If you’re on TikTok you’re not on YouTube.

    So what ends up happening is a board of directors ask “why is this user on Twitter and not TikTok?” somebody answers “Well, we serve short videos and they were looking for text microblogs, these are two different categories” and the directors go “well then let’s add text microblogs”.

    In fact, the directors could be forced to do so - if they are made aware of one reason their company isn’t capturing even more of the user’s time, but don’t act on it, investors might consider this as intentionally sabotaging their growth.

    kadu , to technology in What is your preferred fitness tracker/smartwatch?
    @kadu@lemmy.world avatar

    I really like Samsung’s Watch 5, both in terms of appearance but also software and tracking performance. It’s the only sleep tracker that actually matches my subjective experience with sleep (how tired I feel, how many times I remember waking up, etc).

    kadu , to nostupidquestions in Which Lemmy android app is the most battery efficient?

    Jerboa is probably the most efficient.

    kadu , to nostupidquestions in is it likely that embedded videos will ever be a part of the lemmy experience?
    @kadu@lemmy.world avatar

    I’m going to be honest with you, I have absolutely no idea how it works. And as far as I can see, there are very few instances at the moment.

    Though someone smarter than me could probably answer you by checking the source code, or maybe they even have some documentation written already.
