@NickEast @fantasybookstodon @horror @writers @writingcommunity @writing In Farah Medlesohn's categories, something coming through the portal into our world, as in the Cthulhu mythos, is an "intrusion" fantasy. Her other categories in addition to portal are "liminal," where the fantastic is just out of view (maybe John Crowley's Little, Big), and "immersive," which is something like LotR. I don't remember reading a story in which the protagonist is a portal themselves, but it could happen.

Dec 9, 89 Dear Pamela Pia — The C print of the Sirens frontispiece is breathtaking. How could I disapprove it? Convey my thanks to Richard Powers. He may recall our meeting in a corridor at Dell on the occasion of his first Sirens cover. I congratulated him on that job, and he look(ed) at me as though I were bananas, seemed offended that I would think that he took doing covers for S-F paperbacks seriously. I have to say that this one is ten times as deep as the first one. Better feel him out before letting him know I’m pleased. Cheers, Kurt Vonnegut

You have to piece yourself together. Bit by bit. Part by part. Sometimes with clarity and precision. Sometimes with the light and confidence. At other times in the midnight hour. Fumbling in the dark. But you have to be assembled before the ego can be stripped away. You have to understand the structure of who you have been, before you can move beyond who you are.

@duanetoops @bookstodon So, you are assuming a certain amount of fragmentation as a starting point. Is that warranted? And you are assuming that someone wants to be someone other than who they are. That also seems questionable. I'm not getting it. Why not just be who you are?
